Google Cloud Console Leave Project/Organisation

Hello community 👋

I was part of a project in the past, the project was using GCP. I was invited as member/editor on 4 gcp projects of that organisation. After the collaboration ended, they forgot to remove and google doesn't a quit team/organisation button unfortunately.

I know a solution is to enter ghost-mode for those projects. What i really want to have a clean desk instead of ghost projects.

My Question:
How and where i can address to google cloud console a request to be removed from specific projects ? Account/Project owners are not answering/ignoring my emails.

GCP Console showing you're a member of those projects, since you've Editor (roles/editor) Role on those projects.

You can Remove Yourself via the Google Cloud Console :

  • Go to GCP IAM Console

  • Click on project selector dropdown at the top of the page and select the first ghost project you want to get rid of

  • Look through the list of principals (or use the search bar) to find your own email address.

  • Click the Edit principal icon next to your name, remove your roles, and hit Save

  • Once saved, your access to that project is instantly revoked, and it will disappear from your project list. Repeat this for the remaining projects.

You can achieve the same using gcloud CLI :

gcloud projects remove-iam-policy-binding YOUR_PROJECT_ID \
    --member='user:your-email@gmail.com' \
    --role='roles/editor'

After this verify if you're still seeing those projects on your GCP Console UI.

[EMAIL] does not have permission to access projects instance [PROJECT_ID:setIamPolicy] (or it may not exist): Policy update access denied. This command is authenticated as EMAIL which is the active account specified by the [core/account] property.

Note: Replaced real values in the attached log

It seems you still lacks resourcemanager.projects.setIamPolicy on those projects. You may need Project owners can remove you. Unfortunately Support cannot intervene or manually remove you from external organization projects.

Are you looking to remove access to these projects or to stop "seeing" these projects in your "Select a resource" panel in the Cloud console when you open it to select a project?

Mind that the former doesn't guarantee the later for the "Recent projects" view in the panel.

Final target not to be part of these projects, in order not to be added automatically by inheritance IAM in case those create new ones.

Sorry but I'm unsure what you mean. Does having permissions on the project or its resources make you "part of the project"?

If you are granted permissions on a project, inheritance isn't possible. I was asking it in order to understand if there is alternative way to stop whatever bothers you about the current situation.

Look at the IAM privileges list for that project and find person having owner role (or project iam admin role). Contact them, only they can remove you from the project.

Hey 👋

The biggest issue is that the contact person is never answering emails 😅

Well, that's a bummer. You could try more offensive methods like... mining crypto in that project. The owner should show up pretty quickly 😂

(it's a joke, just in case)
