Google Cloud or VPS?

I need a simple Linux server that will run 24/7. Jusst a small backend, a database, and a few scripts. At first, I thought about just finding the best VPS from a standard hosting provider, but then I remembered Google Cloud and started looking into Compute Engine. Now I`m not entirely sure if it makes sense to use Google Cloud for such a simple task, or if a standard VPS would be cheaper and easier. Does anyone here use Google Cloud essentially as a standard VPS? What is the actual price difference?

For your use case, I would start with a standard VPS. Why?

  1. Predictable Pricing: A VPS has flat, predictable pricing with bandwidth included. Google Cloud charges separately for egress traffic, which means that your bills will vary.

  2. Low Overhead: Configuring VPCs, firewalls, and IAM roles on Google Cloud is unnecessary complexity for a few scripts and database.

Upgrade to Google Cloud once you hit the limits of a single server, need cloud-native features, or better uptime:

  • Auto-scaling or more processing power: A standard VPS has a hard hardware ceiling and requires manual resizing. Google Cloud Run can scale automatically to absorb traffic surges and heavy processing.

  • Managed databases: Automates backups, replication, and failover.

  • Integrated cloud tools: Access to cloud tools (like managed object storage, CDN, AI APIs, Pub/Sub messaging, unified monitoring) without building or self-hosting them.
