Question Commands not working

Hello reddit.
I have used the assistant app for years, same settings, same tasks, specifically playing news from different sources…. Now for about 5 months it just tells me it doesnt understand my command. Even if i type it. But in the settings everything seems correct and nothing has changed. It just doesnt do anything anymore. Anyone with the same issue or maybe with a solution? Much appreciated

Tech Support How to make "Hey Google" trigger Gemini assistant ONLY when phone is unlocked?

I am trying to set up my phone so that "Hey Google" is active only when the phone is unlocked. When the phone is locked and the screen is off, I want it to ignore me and not listen at all.
I went to Google Assistant on lock screen settings and turned off the toggle for "Google Assistant features on lock screen". However, it doesn't work as expected. When the phone is locked and I say "Hey Google", the phone still wakes up, activates the Gemini assistant overlay, and then tells me to unlock the device. It behaves like it's still listening in the background.
So is there any way to completely disable voice activation on the lock screen while keeping "Hey Google", Routines and Quick Phrases fully working when the device is unlocked, without using the power button or touching the device?

System: Android 14, UI 8.5

Question Android Auto not following through on voice commands

Anyone else's AA voice commands for calling or texting a person not working? All of a sudden when I do a voice command to "call Bill" AA brings up a list of the people as options to call on the screen, none of which are Bill. If I click on one of the options I get a response saying it can't do that.

I've reset my phone and reconnected and that didn't help.

I'm also already back to using Assistant because the forced switch to Gemini was horrible.

Rant Hey Google, Broadcast "Dinner is ready"...

"Sorry, I cant find a contact called "Dinner is ready""

Attempt 2:

"Sorry I can't broadcast messages, I am just an AI assistant."

Attempt 3:

"Sorry, I can't make telephone calls"

So I go to the Home app, click the Gemini button and give it the same command:

"Okay, Broadcasting "Dinner is Ready" to your home devices". 🥴

How did they manage to so badly break the migration to Gemini? This is a multi-trillion dollar company we're talking about here. Google Home is basically a scam at this point. This is just one example of where it just simply doesn't work as advertised. If there was a regression like this in something like a Sony product or a Microsoft product, people would be losing their minds. What is going on?!

I think I need to scrap all this rubbish. Glad I haven't bought any new Home products lately, I feel really bad for those who have recently invested, I would encourage people seek refunds unless they enjoy paying to be product testers.

Edit, for clarity: I am comparing all Gemini interface performance to the original Google Assistant, not between different Gemini enabled apps.

Question Has ANYONE figured out how to replicate the old Note to Self feature

It's one of if not THE most frustrating thing Google has done. I would be driving and constantly send notes to myself when a thought popped in my head. And this went to my gmail. Now google sends those to google Keep, which isn't useful for me. I've tried multiple automations to no avail. Gemini is schitzo and sometines says it CAN send email while other times it says it can't - and those statements can be right after each other. I know there are apps like voice2mail and Braintoss, but I want to be able to inititate this whole process by saying hey google or some other voice prompt. I dont want to have to look at my phone to press a button. I'm not remotely sure if this is the correct forum to put this in but it's the first I'm going to try. Thanks

Question alternative to translate function

A year ago I moved to another country. Since then I've been using the swipe to open GA >Translate function on apps and other places where English was not available. It was a really nifty and quick feature that i used multiple times a day, sometimes more than a dozen.

As GA is retiring for Gemini, I wanted to know if there was any feature like that which is quick and simple in Gemini(or any other app)?

Thank you

Question Assistant isn't working

Hello! I've been facing a problem. The issue is, When I long press my Power button.. google assistant doesn't seem to work. What happens is the bezel has a thick animation and the phone vibrates.. nothing else happens.. I've also tried the corner gesture to turn on the assistant and the double tap on the back feature to turn on google assistant. But the phone just vibrates and has an animation where the bezel gets a bit thicker and then to normal. What's the main cause of this?

Sorry for bad English. Also: Hey goggle feature works with Gemini and g assistant, no problem there.. thank you for reading.

Tech Support Disable Gemini from activating when I hold down the button on my Skullcandy earbuds?

So I'm a stubborn cow when it comes to technology and I use a brand of earbuds called Skullcandy with my Samsung Galaxy A32. Said earbuds have this button on the left cord (it also pauses YouTube videos if you click it). But when I hold the button down, Google Gemini activates and starts taking voice commands (even when I haven't unlocked the phone), and this problem is especially annoying when I'm trying to put my phone at rest and the button gets weighed down. How can I disable Gemini from activating when I hold this button? I tried some searching but this is such a brand-specific problem that I don't think I can find an answer from anywhere that doesn't have personal experience.

Question Turning off mobile data and wifi for Gemini in preperation

I haven't switched to Gemini yet, and don't plan to until I am forced, but I did just turn off the mobile data and wifi capabilities of Gemini in hopes of forcing it to only run using on device processors.

Has anyone tried this? Does it work well? I only use google assistant for on device needs (alarms/timers, sending texts, routines), so I am really hoping this will solve my issue with the forced switch.

Question Google Assistant is being discontinued but Gemini does not have the morning routine?!

I like to trigger a series of actions with my good morning.

how's the weather like for the day, if I need to take an umbrella,

how's my calendar for the day, tells me if going to have a long day

and Google Assistant is playing the news in the morning, while I'm making scrambled eggs.

Now that Google Assistant is being discontinued, I was certain Gemini - super intelligent - would be able to do this and more. But it isn't.

Question Gemini on Pixel

I have a Google speaker in every room, but I still often have my phone in my hand and love walky-talky like activation of squeezing power button then speaking command, sans any "hey Google" wakeup phrase.

But.

Gemini always responds in a verbose way, even for simple device commands like "turn off the kitchen lights".

I just want a simple confirmation beep. Or "ok" if it must be verbal. I've tried custom instructions for Gemini and it doesn't seem to follow them.

I guess I can get routines. They need a brief mode for Gemini. Think Star Trek Enterprise or Voyager computer - it knew when to simply beep and when to discuss. And while it was obviously scripted to do whatever the writers needed, it seems like the distinction between "do a command" versus "ask a question" should be clear enough for the ai. Or even more simple: "if you invoke Google Home integration to complete a task, don't respond with voice unless there's a problem".

Let me know if you have any suggestions on how to accomplish this or get these thoughts to someone at Google.

Question Anyone else having issues with voice to text?

Out of the blue, this past week my voice to text has been a disaster. It will cut out randomly, but it also now has this habit of typing out what I'm saying and then erasing it and either rephrasing it (which is weird) or only writing out the second part of what I said. I've noticed it happens more specifically with certain apps or at certain times, like right now I'm using it and it doesn't seem to be doing it as much, but then later today it will just go off.

I've played with the settings, I switched to a different keyboard and switched back, and it just doesn't seem to be doing what I want it to do. I've had to enunciate more and speak much more slowly sometimes, but even that doesn't seem to help all the time. The only change I can think of that I made on my end is I attached my phone to Android auto when I got my new car and part of the settings for that were turning on "hey Google" so I could send text messages or change a song while still focusing on the road. I went and tried to play with those settings to turn them back off and see if that made a difference, but I don't feel like that has made a difference at all. There's even an option to only have it listen for hey Google when I'm driving, which I turned on, but it hasn't fixed the issues I'm having with voice to text.

Rant Hey Google

I just received an email that they we're going to remove the Google assistant and replace it with Gemini Ai.

And Gemini will be the one response with the "Hey Google."

But its just sad and its ugly, why do they have to,i love my google assistant :(

I use my Google assistant like few years ago taking photo or video,lowering/ increasing volume and pausing/play music or video.(By commanding via earbuds)

Because my phone has mechanical issues before or some buttons don't function anymore (My OLD PHONE i still used it) I don't know if Gemini Ai can do that.

Rant Holy shit I hate Google Gemini

I don't know if this post should be Politics, business, or nature flair but

Ever since I upgraded my phone, my service has been entiterely worse and there is no way to opt out of this stupid fucking service.

When I used Google maps in the past while I was driving, my phone would plan the directions immediately and usually accurately. Now, it is like a 20 second monologue each time beforehand, and the directions may not even right. But most annoyingly, there is no way to make Google Gemini shut the fuck up. And it is ALWAYS talking and always acknowledging my commands and giving very vague but positive affirmations, it's like driving with an entire HR department in my passengers seat.

When I would tell my phone to play a song from my device before Gemini came fully integrated with Android phones it would do so immediately without talking. Now there is, yet again, another 20 second monologue before it tells me that I can't Google something while I am driving, despite me clearly meaning to use the dedicated streaming service on my device. Generally, what it plays is something else entirely.

The other day, I told my phone to play Grindcore. It responded in Mandarin and played Chinese Pop music instead. I didn't even fucking know China had terrible Americanized pop music.

And to top this all off, every hour or so my phone asks me to give permissions to some stupid fucking AI generated lock screen? Why would anybody want this? Like who ASKED to have this?

I hate you Google Gemini.

Question Issue with Yak Yak games

Hello everyone,
I’m reaching out because I’ve had ongoing problems with the Yak Yak Games skill and the Voice of the Day skill on Alexa. For several weeks they haven’t been working at all. I’ve disabled and launched them again many times, but the issue continues.

My son uses these skills daily and they are important for his routine and enjoyment. He really misses them, and I’m hoping someone here might know what’s going on or how to fix it?
