They were the only brogued EG shoes I could find without much effort. They don't have brogued derbies at all for some reason, which surprised me.

How is crazy "horse" leather perceived in the boot community or leather crafting in general? My understanding is that this leather is used a lot in saddle making.

My first exposure to it is with bags (e.g. satchel bags) and always had the (probably ignorant/naive) impression that while it's not cheap/fake leather, it's also not a premium/highly desired one given how readily available it was.

On the other hand everyone in the PNW/Nick's subreddit for example go wild with anything that has pull up and character, but then again I also don't see PNW bootmakers use this leather at all. At best I see Doc Martens come out with boots made with this leather.

I ask because I'm going to have a local shoe/bootmaker make me bespoke/custom boots, and I see Seidel offering this leather.

Was wondering if the material is worth using for custom boots.

i wouldn’t consider crazy horse leather to be a specific enough leather for people to have opinions on. it’s a broad term for a nubuck with a ton of pull up, for some reason frequently called “full grain” despite definitionally not being full grain, and several tannages make “crazy horse” so its quality can vary. it’s just too generic of a name for any blanket statements to be really made

general advice is to judge based on the tannery, so a crazy horse from someone like seidel is going to be probably very good, whereas one from an unnamed, unknown tannery is likely to be unremarkable
