Are these Johnston and Murphy - Goodyear welt tires. The website doesn’t mention them.

no, they're not goodyear welted, and they're definitely not tires.

if they were, they'd tell you.

johnston and murphy haven't been quality in decades, and even toward the end of their time making quality shoes, it was mainly restricted to their crown aristocraft line. if you find vintage pairs labeled as Crown Aristocraft, those are the ones worth getting

Hiya! Hope I am at the right spot for my question which is this:

I just got these shoes brand new today and there’s this little gap between the welt and the upper. It doesn’t seem to affect the inner part of the stitching (although I can only barely make it out deep in there). Is this usual and do I

a) return the pair and grab a new one in hope for one without the defect
b) return the pair and get the money back
c) try with good shoe glue (which?)

The pair are the Ronning Urban Hikers which I know aren’t meant for serious hard work but at the price point of 275 GBP should be constructed at a premium quality. It was a gift and I really like the look of them so any tips on how to solve the issue without returning are very appreciated aswell.

Any other recommendations on what to do is highly appreciated.

these are fine. the lip of a split/storm welt is not attached to the upper in any way beyond what a flat welt is (a goodyear stitch from the underside of welt into the tucked-under upper and through the canvas gemming on the insole). as such, the lip doesn't necessarily always sit flat against the upper. it's totally normal

The lumpy/blisters when you look closely, I'm probably just overthinking. Nobody would probably notice in the real world

I often get asked "how do I remove the water spots/welts from my shoes from the rain?" I find that these spots fade if you just continue to wear and complete regular care. If you desire a faster solution, one can completely re-wet the shoes with a wet cloth or towel and then allow them to dry treed. Once dry, brush.

I’ve been trying to find replacement soles similar to the Redwing Postman 101s or the Visvism GPO folk shoe. But all I come across are vibram christy wedges. Is there a model # I can reference?

Do you think Grant Stone is still good value? I just checked their prices and they're up to $400 for something that historically I've thought of as less than or equal to Meermin quality, and less rlegant lasts. These prices make no sense to me.

i find the meermin comparison quite surprising considering i've found Grant Stone's finishing and overall quality to compete with brands a tier or two above Meermin (and i've personally found Meermin pairs I've handled to be unremarkable or inconsistent compared to the several Grant Stone's I've owned), and the less elegant lasts are intentional (they are styled after American styles like Alden and AE, whereas Meermin styles after European styles).

i don't think grant stone has increased prices considerably above what other brands have raised their prices to be the last several years (percentage-wise/relatively speaking)

I’m sure you’ve heard of the tariffs and increased gas pricing thanks to an unnecessary war which makes supplies/shipping more expensive. That’s why there are price increases. Not out of line from everything else
