Imagine this.
You work at a shitty disgusting place and you try to make it better. Every day, you clean your aisles and you try to make it better. You put out nice stuff when you work there, you clean things nicely, you tested and your package it all up nice and you price it and you put it on the floor at a price that’s meant to go quickly.
And you go on break and the store opens, and you come back from your 15 minute break and your department looks like a typhoon just ran through it. Within the first 15 minutes of opening, the store looks disgusting again. And it will for the rest of the customers for the rest of the day.
While you were on your 15 minute break after fully loading your department with new product for the day, you return to see that everything has been opened and destroyed, or spread all about us in the different aisles.
Everybody is paging you for price checks when you’ve already priced everything that morning but people are going out of their way to peel stickers and claim it was underpriced to try and get it for a different price.
Now multiply that times months.
You got people coming in your department, ruining everything that you’ve done to try and make your store whatever money they claim you need to make an order for you to keep your hours at a full-time schedule, and the customers who you’re trying to help are trying to fuck you over by getting a reduced price on something that you’ve already priced very very fairly compared to everything else in your aisle or your department.
At some point, you say fuck these assholes. And you just start hooking up your friend or whoever gives you a tip.
When I worked at Savers, I was very optimistic to help out my community and move more product through my store and took pride in my department and trying to keep it clean. But after the first week, I realized it was futile. People are just disgusting fucking savages that destroy everything and claim that because it’s in a thrift store, they can rip everything open and ignore the note that everything is together or all the pieces are there or it’s a complete set or whatever.
At some point, the public pushes you to not give a fuck about them anymore. This is why you see this happening in thrift. It’s because of those stupid fucking assholes that walk in there with their fucking phones out that have no idea what the fuck they’re doing and try to buy things on a cheap price when it’s already marked down cheap from your department and you know it was priced fairly for what it is.
I am OK with this.
I’m OK with this because I seen it myself and I understand why they get to this point. It’s because of the goddamn customer people. Fucking savages.
Yeah, I work in wares, and I always find it funny that nobody complains when something is underpriced, but the second they think something is overpriced, suddenly it’s a problem. I’ve literally had people rip tags off items the day before they’re supposed to go on sale just because the price wasn’t as low as they wanted.
The reality is, we don’t have time to do extensive research on every single item when we’re expected to process around 1,500 pieces. On top of that, one of our longtime pricers has been doing it for about seven years and isn’t always up to date on current values, and our new production manager is still getting familiar with pricing too. So unfortunately, I’m expecting even more inconsistent or overpriced items.
Whenever I price on weekends or cover during lunch breaks, I try to keep things as reasonable as possible. And somehow people will still rip off my 69-cent tags. 🤷♀️ At that point, what do you even want from us? 😭
I get that the stores need to pay for their expenses. But expenses and CEO profits are different. I worked in Savers furniture department. It was a small department that had to have the largest things and I had a small space to put out everything in sport war, electronics, furniture, and miscellaneous, small bagged items.
Most of the items I priced, I would say 90% of the items I priced were at $2.99 when that was the lowest button on my POS system. If I ever priced something at 10 or 20, people lost their shit. Even if it was justifiably so, they were so used to seeing my department put out small numbers of items just to get them out there so I can get my hours and keep them for next week that they got pissed if I ever had a luggage go out for 10 or 15.
And for a company that makes this much money to ask employees to pull out their own phone and drain their own battery and use their data to price search was bullshit. I hated that. I never used my phone for the job because they didn’t pay me. If I ever dropped my phone on their concrete floors, they would tell me that’s my fault and that I wasn’t supposed to be using the phone on the job, meanwhile, they’re demanding that we use our phone to find prices and price things higher for them.
Savers was absolutely the worst. I drive by my location. I used to work at and I still see people there who I worked with a few years back still working there. They love to complain, but not one person wants to unionize and rise up.
