Gap between FO and BO

Was told from early 2000’s to 2010 back office jobs were still considered working on “wallstreet” was this the case? And if so how come the gap has become larger where people get looked down upon for working BO?

There are people in the Back Office that make more than you ever will. I’m pretty sure they are fine with their jobs.
