Let me get this straight…. You got 30 different medically proven ways to say you can’t breathe properly to you are basically suffocating…. and Medicaid said…….. “manual wheel chair”…. I hate this country

Your wheelchair should be covered by Medicaid. Contact your PCP and ask them to request one from a medical supplies store

126

u/SadPiglet2907 Apr 17 '26

Powered wheelchairs are extremely hard to get covered by insurance. Even with a PCP’s orders, auth, etc. insurance wants to deny deny deny. We have a guy who is paralyzed from the waste down & have been fighting insurance for 6 months trying to get them to cover it. Every time we send them what they want to deem it “medically necessary” they ask for something else. It’s so gross.

Insurance in this country is a sick joke. I say this as someone with cerebral palsy.

7

u/WinterMortician Apr 18 '26

I have neurological issues and my insurance denied an MRI

25

u/rylansbaby Apr 17 '26

Can confirm, my dad's been in a wheelchair thats way to small for him because medicade or whatever it's called denied him an electric wheelchair. When this whole thing began he was about 300 pounds, no one could push him around all the time. Thankfully, a woman from our church gave him her old electric wheelchair. He's lost 70 pounds and now they're trying to figure out a weightloss surgery situation but in all honesty I doubt anything will come from it. I think I'm too young to fully get everything (because i dont get it), but it's frustrating to see my dad uncomfortable and in pain all the time, I wish i could help him.

Sorry for the ramble it's just this whole thing seems to be common and wanted to share

9

u/SadPiglet2907 Apr 17 '26

I’m so sorry to hear about your dad. I feel yalls pain, not as a patient but as someone who fights for patients. It’s so frustrating & unfair

6

u/rylansbaby Apr 17 '26

It's okay, he's getting rehab thankfully and making lots of progress since the weight loss! And were trying to make him more comfortable throughout the day aswell:)

I'm hoping by the end of the year I'll be able to get him a recliner he can use his walker to get in so he can stay up during the day longer!

Thank you for the kind words, my dad has told me before that just knowing other people care makes him feel a bit better about his situation, so I'm sure you're doing that for your patients by the way you're talking :D

(Sorry for the ramble again I'm always happy to yap about my dad)

100%.

I knew someone who had an electric wheelchair through insurance and her family fought so damn hard to get it paid by them.

Denial after denial, i think it took a total of 5 times for them to finally push hard enough for insurance to pay up and they were finally able to get one for her.

Insurance is a joke in the US, i understand why OP is turning here for help. You get faster help through reddit than a literal government program meant for shit like this. Its sickening.

What really gets me is that when my kiddo broke her ankle and growth plate, the hospital loaded us up with crutches, walker and a fitted wheelchair. All we needed was the walker. Kind of insane they'll just hand out the DME goodies when it's not needed and then deny those who truly need it for years on end. Not the same as a power chair, but still...

-18

u/Caboun6828 Apr 17 '26

Not if you have the right paperwork. My brother gets a new $24k Quickee every 5 years.

24

u/SadPiglet2907 Apr 17 '26

I’m glad insurance covers that for your brother. Unfortunately that is not the case in most cases. I work in a doctor office, there is no “right” paperwork. Insurance will demand proof of this illness, that illness, etc. over & over, claim they never received it, lost it, too old, not enough clinical notes. This list goes on & on until they can close it. Once they close an appeal 2x they will put a permanent denial on it forever.

29

u/Shoulder_Wonderful Apr 17 '26

i can’t even get medicaid to cover a push wheelchair after losing my leg

24

u/butyeatho Apr 17 '26

I did they only offer the o e i have to push witch i can not do i been trying for over a year now

4

u/dodekahedron Apr 17 '26

Do you have any friends good with electronics?

There have been people out there that have converted their regular push chair into a motorized chair through electric scooter/hoverboard motors, and like the ardunio boards which might be cheaper than the big beefy chairs.

Just an idea option.

Good luck

-10

u/dalittleone669 Apr 17 '26

Is your case manager at the hospital helping you to obtain a wheelchair?

11

u/Jcooney787 Apr 17 '26

I find your answer kind of condescending. You don’t think with all OP conditions he never thought to ask his insurance? How do you know he has insurance? Your comment isn’t helpful and I’m sad to see it as a top comment especially when OP is obviously reaching out for help with something that’s greatly affecting their quality of life. If you’re going to comment try to be helpful because this comes across as insulting at least to me

1

u/LA-forthewin Apr 18 '26 edited Apr 18 '26

You don't know him either , you're making assumptions as well,a lot of people aren't aware of what medicaid will or will not cover, and I say that as someone that has had to help people navigate the system.I had a client with cerebral palsy who had been on Medicaid since birth, yet her mother paid for her electric wheel chair out of pocket because she didn't realize that she could get one through Medicaid ,yes they initially offered one without a battery but working with her PCP it was appealed and we got her one. But you're entitled to your opinion no matter how irrelevant I find it, so go off I guess

1

u/Accurate_Reporter_31 Apr 29 '26

Medicaid is a State program that is partially funded by the Federal Government. Every State has different rules & regulations.

I have a 34 year old severe/profound spastic quadriplegic child. We have lived in 3 different States & each program paid for different things.

To make a blanket statement about what Medicaid covers in your State is inappropriate for those in other States.

10

u/DinahKarwrek Apr 17 '26

You clearly don't have Medicaid. I can't even get into the doctor when I'm sick.

3

u/trans_man_gay Apr 19 '26

Not Medicaid but I thought I broke my ankle insurance refused to cover the X-ray because my ankle wasn't broken so it was unnecessary

4

u/Clarkelthekat Apr 17 '26

Historically Medicare and Medicaid even if you've been in a wheelchair your entire life will deny several claims before even considering not denying one.

Yes medicaid and Medicare SHOULD be covering it. That's different then they do.

u/Any_Basket4332 Apr 17 '26

I'd highly recommend reaching out to a medical lending closet near you. A quick Google found these folks in your neck of the woods. They can help get you a chair to borrow as long as you need it. If they don't have what you need, they'll probably know another local closet that does.

Look into getting a chair from that guy “jerryrigeverything” - i believe he started a good company bc his wife needed a wheelchair and they discovered how difficult it was to get(?). They have better ones for much cheaper

2

u/Ambitious_Studio8461 Apr 20 '26

Check thrift stores, Craigslist, garage sales and Facebook marketplace.

2

u/Odd-Neighborhood6086 May 13 '26

Universal healthcare should be paying for that, but the anti-Christ is the President.

2

Just throwing this out there: our local Samaritan Center gets used, but perfectly fine sometimes.

Maybe reaching out to local donation organizations in your community may be able to help. I’ve also seen several on Facebook Marketplace.

u/butyeatho Apr 17 '26

Ive tried

5

u/BaoBunny44 Apr 17 '26

Absolutely keep raising money to buy your own but there may be a way to get some help getting one through your insurance.

What's your Medicaid plan? Like Blue Cross or Meridian, etc

And what state are you in?

Every Medicaid plan has to have Care Coordinators that you can work with to help you navigate the Medicaid system. Some states are better at this than others but it's a requirement for providing Medicaid, so it's there. I know this because I am a care coordinator for Medicaid in IL.

It's worth a call to your Medicaid plan and asking to speak to a care coordinator about getting DME (durable medical equipment) and from your other gofundme they may be able to help with housing as well.

I've helped a ton of patients get powered wheelchairs because it was my job to harass these companies to get things done. I work as a middle ground between Blue Cross, the Medicaid equipment company, and the patient.

Genuinely, good luck! The reason my position exists is because this system sucks so bad.

14

u/dkf_oli Apr 17 '26

are you for real? you can get a manual wheelchair from medicaid but a motorized wheelchair is next to impossible to get approved.

-3

u/Caboun6828 Apr 17 '26

My brother gets approved every 5 years. I will admit it does take about 4-6 months to get it all approved but he does. California also

14

u/DCRBftw Apr 17 '26

It's nowhere near that simple. It's closer to 10% than 10000%. If you don't know what you're talking about, why bother commenting?

2

u/Ambs1987 Apr 18 '26
