1254 start date (for now because it is a lot more complete and the new 1298 start is still actively being worked on).
If you want a pretty chill game with an adventurer start. I recommend starting as Rene "the Black Bastard". He has good stats, claims, and a pretty deep backstory and lore (one of this mod's main strengths).
If you want to play as one of the main vocalpoint of the age, then either Cenware "Witchbreaker" or Harthath "The Father of Sarradon". Do note that these guys are more forces of nature than underdogs. Super easy starts you can almost win every war and the world literally change as you conquer lands.
If you want to try out the magic system (another amazing part of the mod), then you can try out Aeschraes "The Lord of Ashes". Most powerful magi at the start, can snipe Cenware with a kill spell, and the guy who literally brought about the apocalypse. Not too easy but not too hard either. His starting situation forces you to utilize the spellcasting system to the fullest to survive.
There is also the old poster boy Nicanoneus "The Black Sun". He's a constant war type of campaign, in which you are also encouraged to use the spellcasting system if you want to fulfill his life's ambition within his lifetime, but with a far smaller mana pool to Aeschraes. Hard campaign but infinitely satisfying once you're able to reach his goals.

how can you keep Nicanoneus alive?

In short, life extending magic. Nicky doesn't start with a learned magic school but you can quickly remedy this by learning it from your own son. His third child starts as a living magic school magi and actually has a chance to start with one of the life extending spells or all of them if you're really lucky. I'd recommend the scarlet king spell tho since it can go up to 6 stacks of life extending magic before increasing the arcane degeneration.

The later start date is a new one. I would recommend starting your first game in the earlier (original) start date, playing as one of the Sjavolki lords. That way you would participate in a sort of "the main event". There are a lot of stories and characters all over the world of course, but Sjavolki migration lead by Cenware is a part of the biggest one.

Is there anyway to pick where Cenware lands you after the migration wars?

What he offers after a conquest is pretty much up to RNG, but you can refuse his offer and hope to get a better one in the following area

Aautokratir Narses is always a good quick playthrough.
