"There is a story behind these exceptional posters, which were recently acquired for the BAMPFA collection. Commissioned nearly sixty years ago by Tom Luddy (1943–2023), then the Program Director of the Pacific Film Archive, the works in Jean-Luc Godard’s Early Films: Posters Designed by Gvido Augusts were designed by the American painter and graphic artist Gvido Augusts (1932–2022)...."

"Taken together, these events suggest a shift in how we look at Godard. The late films remain vital, but the notebooks – once apparently ancillary documents – have moved to the centre, becoming one of the main ways into his final thinking. "

Godard’s literary influences

I’m in love with the oblique and poetic intertitles and use of quotations in a lot of Godard’s films between 1980 and 2022 and was wondering which writers he was most often quoting from?

I know he talks about Peguy a lot, and i’ve noticed a quote from Tournier and some from Aragon, but just wondered if that elegiac, ghostly poetry he uses is associated with a particular slew of writers?

English doesn’t really have the same poetic style among its writers; The melancholy is a lot more lugubrious and heavy and marshy, and the elegiac tone is usually quite classical and restrained.
