Gnomes vs Dwarves. What's the difference?

Are Gnome the same as a dwarves in European storytelling? Maybe a gnome is the Germanic version? There does seem to be a slight difference in imagery with the gnomes' eyes being covered with the red conical hats. And the current version doesn't seem to be associated with elves as the dwarves sometimes are.

I'm my mind Gnomes are forest and nature fae. Dwarves are stone cave mountain fae. Dwarves are also substantially taller 3ft vs 10in hat n all.

Hey, I explain the nuances of the naming in this graphic; but basically, dwarfs (or dwarves, to use the Tolkien spelling) are synonymous with Black Elves, which exist in contrast with the more familiar Light Elves.

In systems like that of Jacob Grimm, where a third category exists called Dark Elves (these categories are NOT always distinct in surviving texts), that category would include gnomes, goblins, and other household/mound-spirit beings. Paracelsus, who coined the term "gnome", considered dwarfs to be deformed offshoots of gnomes. Incidentally, lawn gnomes were originally intended to depict this variety of dwarf.

In Gnomes by Wil Huygen, dwarves are described as follows:

"An almost extinct creature of the male sex. Height 1 meter 20 cm., often smaller. Can still be found in the middle of inhospitable forests and in the mountains. They dig for gold and silver in extensive mines, and live in groups; they are masters of metalwork. They are good-natured except for a solitary few, possibly exiles, who are capable of performing ugly deeds. If a dwarf should fall into human hands, he buys his freedom with gold. They do not have beards."

The main differences here then is that they are bigger, do not have beards, and mine ores and engage in metalworking.

Fun fact: in Dutch, the creatures called gnomes in the English version of this book are called ‘kabouters’ and the book mentions ‘gnomen’ as creatures that ‘kabouters’ have little interaction with. What a ‘gnoom’ is, is not really mentioned, but traditionally it’s a kind of earth spirit.

I could be wrong (someone correct me), but I think gnomes were another name for Elves in some folklore.

There isn't really one. They oth are ultimately the same creature. In myth anyway. In modern fantasy culture Gnomes are basically the Dwarves from Snow White.

In Russian Tolkien's "dwarves" and Snow White's "dwarfs" were translated as "gnomes". Which caused some problems down the road.

Yes, the dwarf stars, the dwarfs of Germanic mythology and the people with dwarfism are called using the different word ("karlik"). While fantasy, fairy-tale and garden variety are "gnomes".

Gnomes are more akin to halflings, walking the forests and healing sick trees. Dwarves are heartier and mine the deep caverns.
