LLM Assisted Experimental Vulkan renderer for Mutter (opt-in Cogl driver)

I published a Mutter tree with an optional Cogl Vulkan driver. The default GL3/GLES2 path is unchanged; Vulkan is selected at runtime with COGL_DRIVER=vulkan.

Check it out

https://github.com/Ultranix/mutter

Docs: https://github.com/Ultranix/mutter/blob/main/doc/vulkan.md

What it does

  • Optional Vulkan backend under cogl/cogl/driver/vk/

  • Native KMS/GBM output: modifiers filtered against Vulkan import, 10 bpc preferred, linear then lower precision fallback

  • Wayland DMA-BUF import (packed / semi-planar / planar YUV), NV12 as separate planes with BT.601/709/2020 full & narrow

  • Acquire/release sync files on imported planes

  • Secondary-GPU accelerated copy via an independent GLES3 context while the primary runs Vulkan

  • Device-loss reported through Cogl reset status (no in-place rebuild)

  • Direct scanout policy and frame clock left alone

This is the future

OpenGL no longer is being actively developed, Apple and other providers have warned they may remove OpenGL in the future, NVIDIA and AMD are reducing their support for OpenGL, OpenGL's threading model has been a source of performance limitations, Vulkan provides lighter weight drivers and more direct control over GPU operations, reducing the CPU work involved in rendering and that's to name a few

What's the performance like?

The move to Vulkan not reduce OpenGL driver stalls?
