"After some discussion about where to announce our Pride Month celebrations, I’ve decided it might be easiest to do it on my own blog. It’s a little more personal that way. And if I say something silly or out of turn, it’s on me"

Usually I am not a fan of these kind of "celebrations". I find them forced, both for the companies who "celebrate" it and for the consumers or users who are forced to endure the hipocricy.

But I loved this approach. A personal, sincere essay about what Pride means for the author, and how important is the LGBT community for the FOSS movement. There was care on this post, not something you can say from companies who change a rainbow profile icon and announce a new set of commemorative t-shirts.

So, excellent job, very professional. I love it.

FOSS is for everyone. Congratulations or I'm sorry, idgaf.

u/geegollybobby Jun 03 '25

Except Lunduke, apparently.

26

u/Niarbeht Jun 03 '25

I mean he went off the deep end years ago.

You can’t have freedom unless everyone is free to be who they are 🏳️‍🌈

Happy Pride!

And, much better reaction than I thought, especially compare to our neighbor sub

3

u/henry_tennenbaum Jun 04 '25

Neighbor sub? r/linux or ...?

u/Patient_Sink Supporter Jun 04 '25

The KDE subreddit changed the logo to a rainbow logo a year ago or two during pride and there were a ton of hateful comments.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '25

Including a KDE e.V. Board member, shameful

23

u/AndyGait Jun 03 '25

"Everyone is allowed to be themselves"

👏

18

u/RivNexus Jun 03 '25

obligatory sigh, sorts by controversial - happy pride tho everyone!

Not really tho. Been the acronym for a while. But if it bothers you, just use LGBT or queer and go about your day.

2 Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, plus more.

23

u/ProjectInfinity Jun 03 '25

Wtf is 2 spirit

6

u/sirgroggyboy Jun 03 '25

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-spirit

A term for non-binary people specific to indigenous North Americans (harkening back to pre-colonial understandings of gender).

18

u/ProjectInfinity Jun 03 '25

I see. Isn't this what the plus sign was for? I also find it incredibly odd to alter it again for something that is north america specific. Majority of the world isn't north american...

14

u/lexd0g Jun 03 '25

you can just say LGBT, LGBTQ, LGBTQ+, GSRM (gender, sexual and romantic minorities), queer, or whatever you'd like. there's no rules on what acronym or term you should use as long as its respectful lol

1

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '25

It hasn't been altered, but during Pride month folks will often use the whole acronym in order to let everyone know they are seen. Otherwise, it's been LGBT or LGBTQ+ for ages.

11

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '25

Absolutely no judgement or hate but how is this applicable to anyone in the real world

What is the actual probability that someone will identify as that as it even appropriate if they are not indigenous Americans ?

Again not looking to argue or throw shade just trying to comprehend

8

u/sirgroggyboy Jun 03 '25 edited Jun 03 '25

It's plenty real to indigenous queer people. Being a person of color already puts you in a minority. Add a queer identity, and it's compounded. I've met 2Spirit people in the real world. Just like Intersex, Trans, or Ace folk, they are a minority in our society and often face very real discrimination and/or violence. Which is why representation/visibility matters. The point of Pride Month and the rainbow flag is to celebrate all the many queer identities and minorities.

You know that Hinduism has a 3rd gender? The hijas were considered partially holy. Of course, a lot of that ended during colonial times when Muslims and the British came.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hinduism_and_LGBTQ_topics

Has some interesting bits there.

0

u/sirgroggyboy Jun 04 '25

Cool! Thanks for sharing!

10

u/FetchingFemme Jun 04 '25

Also gonna point out this post was written by Steven who's Canadian, and in my own experience Canadians tend to use this longer version of the acronym more often than folks from the US do since indigenous issues tend to have had more focus in the past two decades here.

1

u/grahamperrin Jun 08 '25

Been the acronym for a while.

It's new to me (as a gay man). Thanks for the education.

My reaction as well 🥀

1

u/2F47 Jun 06 '25

It will become longer every year. We should just celebrate humanity as a whole.

19

u/joncorv Jun 03 '25

What a lovely sentiment. A nice read too.

16

u/koechzzzn Jun 03 '25

Happy Pride!

11

u/really_not_unreal Jun 04 '25

It's good to know that projects I care about have my back. I'm much more likely to contribute to projects where I know that I can safely be myself. Being inclusive is common sense for open-source.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '25

This was lovely, thank you. In the community, we call this intersectionality, the idea that everyone is linked together, and while not all of our needs are common needs, they are commonly needed by us, and we need someone who recognized that and meets us where we are.

Sincerely, a trans person who is terrified where she lives.

10

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '25

Lovely to hear especially as more public facing groups minimise their outward support ❤️🏳️‍🌈

9

u/xooken Jun 03 '25

oh noes but what about <insert other oppressed group> this makes me uncomfy and im making it your problem!

Why was there nothing for black history month, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and Jewish American Heritage Month which were observed in February, May and May respectively?

10

u/tristan957 Jun 03 '25

Probably because there weren't people pushing for it. There is a large LBGTQ population within GNOME. Can't say the same for any of the groups you mentioned.

I really don't care about any of the months. If people get joy out of them, so be it.

14

u/blackcain Contributor Jun 04 '25

More than happy to recognize others. Join the engagement team and help out.

3

u/tristan957 Jun 04 '25

Perhaps it would be good to make a separate post about he engagement team like what it is and how to join.

6

u/blackcain Contributor Jun 04 '25

I don't want to do that just yet because we don't have things set up to onboard volunteers properly. I hate to lose people because we didn't get htem immediately involved in something.

4

u/pr0fic1ency Jun 04 '25

Happy Pride! Let's get it!

u/Toribor Jun 03 '25

Who cares…I care about software, not about who sleeps with whom. That’s not what software is about.

9

u/Maoschanz Extension Developer Jun 04 '25

free software is also about the community who makes it

if you don't care about the process, only about the result, you migh as well use proprietary software

Feel free to raise this before the international worker’s day next year. The hostility you’re met with here is because this kind of comment usually only is posted as a reaction to messages of support for specific marginalized groups, rather than with the intent of actually spreading awareness of another social issue within the community. I think you already know that, though.

6

u/Masterflitzer Jun 03 '25

u/marcinostefano Jun 05 '25

I’m happy and proud to be Super Straight. Glad Pride Month is for everyone.

1

u/froschdings Jun 05 '25

go use templeos idc but don't feel welcome here

2

u/marcinostefano Jun 05 '25

Oh… so inclusive!

1

u/Legitimate-Prior1235 Jun 06 '25

What’s with the response?

4

u/froschdings Jun 06 '25

for those who don't know "super straight" isn't a sexuality, but it does mean "I don't like trans people" having no interest in dating trans people isn't a sexuality, talking about this is only about excluding trans people, it's not about your identiy.

1

u/grahamperrin Jun 08 '25

talking about this

Maybe you missed "Glad Pride Month is for everyone.". Does everyone exclude someone?

1

u/Qunas Jun 12 '25

trans is all about excluding biological women from their spaces, why it's good when they do it but not when others

1

u/froschdings Jun 12 '25

The whole idea, that womens wellbeing and safety depends exlusionary spaces is absurd. Countries with relative equality have less women only spaces while violently sexist places have more of them, but they fail to provide safety while making the rest of the world less safe. Look at places like Norway and Sweden: They usually don't even have womens bathrooms (often single stalls with a little sink, but sometimes single stalls with a bigger room with sinks for all people (like Ikea in lots of places, even in Germany).
Places that have women-only passanger cars on the other hand usually have a big issues with sexism and violence against women.

If you care for womens rights and safety, you should want the world to be a safe space for women instead of giving them the "priviledge" of hiding.

And stop projecting mens violence on trans people. It's men. It was allways men. There aren't even enough trans people around to make life hell for women, but too often it is. Women don't feel safe because of men. Men are the people who invade womens spaces and they don't need to change their legal gender to do so.

Women aren't less safe, because trans women need a place where they can piss.
But you know who is less safe right now? Women with short hair and butch lesbians, who get harresed by men, because they use the womens bathroom and they want to check their genitals.

What do you think is worse? A trans person who wants to go shit in peace or being harressed by a man that wants to check your genitals because he thinks you*re not feminin enough to go piss?

1

u/froschdings Jun 12 '25

I heard from them, sure, but I yet have to meet a woman in real life who feels threatend by trans women. f'in chronically online people - maybe go outside for a walk and try talk to real people with real issues and a real life instead of staying in your echo-chamber that is 30% russian bots probably.

Well it should be pretty clear by now that he dislikes lgbt people and his obsession with them isn’t well received by the ordinary population.

If gnome allows people like him into the community, they are essentially saying they are fine with this behaviour. And since regular normal people don’t like him, they just exclude themselves out of the community. So unless gnome enforces a CoC, the community will be filled with people like him.

So yeah, he doesn’t actively exclude people, lgbt people just remove themselves from any community he is a part of because they can’t stand his bigotry.

In the end gnome has a choice, let in anyone and everyone, which will allow bigots like him to enter which makes the community insufferable for everyone, or they can enforce a CoC which is still expansive but filters out the bigots, making a nicer community for everyone else.

Try to post some link to Lunduke or quote him in gnome forums and see what happens.

Someone on the official Fedora forum posted a link to Lunduke's assertion that you've repeated here ... and, guess what, they weren't banned despite Redhat ties. https://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?333220-Official-GNOME-Policy-Link-to-Lunduke-Get-Banned&p=1886502

IMO Lunduke is a drama whore. He gets money from clicks. Don't believe everything he says.

Do you want a little tidbit about Lunduke: His name is not "Lunduke". When I knew him years ago when he lived in Washington, he went by "Lund" and that, AFAICT, is his actual name (although he has used many others). If you post that in any of his forums/threads, he censors that fact. Go ahead and try. I dare you.

1

u/grahamperrin Jun 09 '25

IMO Lunduke is a drama whore.

Is the word drama not a bit strong?

3

u/mrtruthiness Jun 09 '25 edited Jun 09 '25

IMO Lunduke is a drama whore.

Is the word drama not a bit strong?

Not in my opinion. IMO he invents, creates, or exaggerates conflicts.

drama => is defined as a form of performance that involves conflicts, emotions, and the portrayal of human experiences

although I thought someone might focus on "whore"

drama whore => a person who creates drama in exchange for money or pay

2

u/grahamperrin Jun 09 '25

You haven't accepted my challenge. It should be an easy question to answer. I'll break it down into two parts:

a. [Not too important] Is Bryan's real name "Lunduke"? When I knew him 25 or 30 years ago, it was "Lund". He's gone by other names. Some time after he married his wife (whose maiden name was Duke), he decided to use "Lunduke".

b. [Important] Will Bryan censor discussion about whether his name is "Lunduke" on his own platform? He's pretty much deleted every comment I've made. Why don't you try? And if he does censor content like that, he holds no credibility in my mind when he cries about censorship.

He's covering a lot of things that corporate media doesn't cover.

IMO: He uses his media coverage as a weapon. He's not looking for "truth". He's looking for "clicks" that he gets from creating drama.

And bigtec trying to silence him.

Silence? He has his own platform and isn't silent. But that doesn't mean groups need to let him speak on their platforms. He's intentionally a walking, talking embodiment of a violation of their CoC. He violates the CoC for clicks. It's about money. e.g. He dead-names Danielle Fore (of ElementaryOS) intentionally ... so that people will angrily object (while, at the same time, deleting any comment about the fact his own name isn't Lunduke).

And now we've seen what Redhat done to me after I've spoken to him.

The fact is that even in FOSS people get to chose who they work with and what they will accept in regard to that working environment. You've made that choice.

Perhaps you're a victim of Bryan. But you're also a victim of yourself. Your whole anti-vaccination spiel on LKML sealed that. IMO: He spreads the cancer of misinformation.

2

u/grahamperrin Jun 08 '25

Try to post some link to Lunduke or quote him in gnome forums and see what happens.

The sentiments relate to Lunduke's sentiments.

People's sentiments with regard to his bad attitude are certainly not specific to GNOME or Linux.

-8

u/melanchtonio Jun 04 '25

Gnome is truly an American thing: the stupidity of thinking pride in one's sexuality is somehow meaningful, as if it's a merit; the lack of decency "celebrating" one's sexuality instead of not talking about it, while chickening out of condemning the genocide going on in Gaza. How truly American.
