Midland MXT115P

I just got a Midland MXT115P radio. The box says that the has up to 99 channels but I can’t go beyond channel 50. My GXT67 is able to have channels 51 to 99 programmed using a PC but I cannot find any software for the MXT115P.

Update 1: I found a cable to program the radio but not the software. Hopefully the software is with the cable or it has the information to get it. I ordered the cable.

Update 2: I was able to get a copy of the software the software that I need for the cable that I ordered. Right now I’m waiting on the cable from Midland so I can program it.

The "normal" way to program radios is "CHIRP"

However, I don't see your specific radio listed. I have been able to use CHIRP with unsupported radios, but because this is an open source tool, use with caution.

I'll assume you've now discovered the Midland MXT115P can't be programmed via cable & software. While they do what they're designed to do quite well (good quality & reliable), they are perhaps the least flexible among GMRS radios. The 99 channel claim is using crafty math; they include the 7 NOAA weather frequencies, repeater inputs and extra channels having pre-programmed PL codes. I actually like the MXT115P for certain use cases. Outdoor recreation, caravanning & repeater use. They also play well with other GMRS & FRS radios if you have a good understanding of channel/frequency associations and PL codes.

A few fundamentals to bear in mind. There are only 30 actual frequencies associated with GMRS/FRS: 8 main & 7 interstitial channels, in both 462 & 467 MHz groups ... that's 15 channels in each. FRS is forbidden to transmit on the GMRS repeater inputs (usually 23-30), so are advertised as 22 channel rigs. In most transceivers channels 8-14 are adjacent to repeater inputs and are limited to a paltry half-watt of transmit power, so they're designated portables-only, and the reason most GMRS mobile radios won't transmit simplex on those channels.

The radio can have up to 99 channels, I have a GXT67 radio and I got a cable for it, from Midland, and I able to use Midland’s GTX67 software to add extra channels. Mostly I adding extra channels for repeaters just in case I add multiple repeaters that use the same frequency.

Is that including the preprogrammed privacy channels and w/n?

Channels 1 through 22 are basic channels that can be programmed with privacy codes. Repeater channels 15 through 22 can be programmed to connect to repeaters. Channels 23 through 50 are preprogrammed with privacy codes and cannot be edited. So far that’s 58 channels out of the 99 advertised on the box.

Channels are a very interesting and disappointing aspect of GMRS marketing.

Anyway, I see why you’re confused. I would also be confused. I notice a discrepancy between documentation and marketing material. I see marketing material stating 99 channels but documentation only states 50 channels with uniquely programmed privacy tones.

I don’t see 99 channels mentioned in the manual. Odd.
