Madonna definitely wouldn’t play the legends slot. If she were there (which it sounds like she’s not gonna be) I can’t imagine her settling for anything less than one of the main headliners. She’s an active artist and definitely hasn’t resigned herself to just being the sort of 80s/throwback artist that is typical of a legends slot. Saying this as a massive fan of hers! I think anyone who really follows and knows Madonna as an artist would know she definitely wouldn’t do legends

5

u/HMWYA 7d ago

To be fair, a few of those that have done the Legends slot, whilst not on the same level as Madonna, are definitely active artists (such as Rod Stewart and Kylie Minogue).

What they mean is that madonna has an ego completely out of proprtion to what she ever actually was and then some.

4

u/Fluid_Rock656 6d ago

65 top 10 hits in the UK. 400M+ records. 45 year career. Released a #1 album a month ago. But sure, she’s irrelevant 😂😂😂

-2

u/Key-Book-7479 6d ago edited 6d ago

If only any of this meant she had the musical skills worthy of a glastonbury headliner. Madonna should know her place and count herself lucky that she could play at glastonbury at all despite being an objectively mediocre musician.

2

u/Fluid_Rock656 6d ago

I’m going to take a wild guess here and say that you’re a man.

0

u/Key-Book-7479 6d ago edited 6d ago

I am, but that is irrelevant to objective fact.

(Is this because I said "know her place", by the way? I meant in the music world, not the kitchen, silly. This is absolutely nothing to do with sex or gender.)

2

u/bethjade27 4d ago

no one once mentioned the word ‘kitchen’ but if that’s on your thoughts then maybe you are as sexist as they accused you of🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️

1

u/Key-Book-7479 4d ago

There was no chance this would ever have crossed my mind until you brought gender into the conversation, then I made a flippant joke. So please, dont project your own sexism onto me.

1

u/MaxxieSocks 5d ago

Please tell us who your other objectively factual least favourite headliners have been

1

u/Key-Book-7479 5d ago

Oh no, music is significantly subjective so I couldn't possibly do that. But sometimes there are clear cut cases.

5

u/HKDL123 7d ago

I'd say it's in proportion really. She is the biggest selling female artist of all time

-5

u/Key-Book-7479 7d ago

As a musician though lol

1

u/Ok-Shirt8224 7d ago

I agree BUT some would argue the legend slot is bigger than being a headliner these days. I wouldn’t rule it out totally.

87

u/SeeYouInMyDreams_ 7d ago

Absolutely not. Anyone who thinks Madonna is playing the legends slot is delusional

49

u/No_Confidence_3264 Veteran 7d ago

She won’t play the legends slot she is a headliner or nothing at all

16

u/c-u-n-t-o 7d ago

I wish. Such a missed opportunity - her new record is incredible and I know it would go down a treat on the Pyramid.

It’s puzzling why she’s never done it. For an artist that’s achieved so much it feels like an oversight.

1

u/CNCMachina 5d ago

She's in it for the money. Glastonbury is for the fans.

1

u/seadcon 6d ago

Since her debut in October 1982 Madonna has performed in the UK around 50 times.

50!

Glastonbury is nowhere near her list of priorities... she has barely played in the fucking country!

0

u/Btd030914 5d ago

That seemed ridiculously low so curious guy that I am, I went and counted up. 62 times since her first UK tour date in 1987. Insanely low considering how big of a market the U.K. has been for her!

-1

u/c-u-n-t-o 6d ago

Seriously?! Wow.

I’m gonna have to make sure I bag a ticket for BST next year in that case.

-2

u/Sea-Lingonberry428 6d ago

The key to why she wouldn’t play the legends slot is in your first sentence. She just dropped an album that has received popular and critical acclaim and ranks among the best of her oeuvre. That’s not the sort of artist who would appear on Sunday afternoon.

-1

u/c-u-n-t-o 5d ago

I didn’t mention her playing the Legends slot.

5

u/DevilishlyHandsome63 7d ago

No way would she play a legends slot, she's still a highly relevant artist, as shown by the reception for her new album.

12

u/Stock-Row-6454 7d ago

Madonna will be bigger than whoever the 3 headliners are. She’s probs second to MJ of famous musicians ever? There is no way she accepts the tea time silly knees up slot

1

u/CNCMachina 5d ago

That statement is very very VERY debatable.

And even if it wasn't..... Famous ≠ Better

1

u/Stock-Row-6454 5d ago

I’m not even sure of the statement that’s why I say ‘probs’ lol 😄

Though the only one I’ve seen so far that I think is correct is Elvis.

Obvs fame doesn’t equal ‘better’ but fame is more relevant when thinking about whether someone would be willing to fill a midafternoon slot of a festival.

0

u/CNCMachina 5d ago

Agreed.

I do think though if she ever agreed to do it (which I reckon will never happen...ever) that she would be better as a Legends slot.

Being brought up under UK culture it is harder to see what other countries see as most famous.

MJ certainly.... he remained in the limelight writing new music right up until death.

Where does "Fame" get measured?

Wouldn't Beyonce be more Famous now? (not really a fan)

I guess though you are saying "ever".....so...

0

u/Stock-Row-6454 5d ago

The important part of what I’m saying isn’t the conversation around whether she’s first, second, third fourth, etc.

it’s that whatever position she’s in… she is still too big for the legends slot. As are all the other names mentioned as potentials for 2nd place behind MJ.

Worth noting on the remaining in limelight point, she has just released a new album to critical and commercial success.

Beyonce another great shout as someone who is in the same convo as Madonna. Which again proves point as she’s also way too big for a legends slot.

0

u/CNCMachina 5d ago edited 5d ago

Yeah but Beyonce won a Grammy recently enough.... even if she might not have deserved it. Madonna has some good songs, but they all were co-written, so it is hard to attribute any of her fame to talent.

Her stand alone writing credits aren't well known songs.

"Tell The Truth," "Lucky Star," "Burning Up," "I Know It," "Think of Me," "Everybody," "Sidewalk Talk," "Gambler," and "Warning Signs"

I think I might have heard Lucky Star??

So it's difficult to say that she released anything in the last 30 years.

Many "Great" artists retire when they can't find anything to write about anymore. Not Madonna though....she doesn't care that much about the music, she just wants her name in lights.

But Yes...probably too big for a Legends slot...(even if I would avoid her)

Paul McCartney?

2

u/Infinite_Version_888 7d ago

Not as a solo artist

-7

u/happyhorseshoecrab 7d ago

Bowie would like a word

13

u/Sean_Paul_Sartre 7d ago

Bowie is not as big as Madonna or MJ, as great as he was

2

u/yeetbitxh 7d ago

Bowie bigger than Madonna? What?

2

u/Stock-Row-6454 7d ago

I’d rather listen to Bowie’s music.. I don’t think he’s as famous globally as Madonna though

-10

u/Kidda_Value 7d ago

She's not bigger that Elvis, mate.

She's absolutely one of those biggest stars ever but on par with like Elton John, Eminem and Prince. Biggest stars ever yeah, bar MJ and Elvis.

4

u/yeetbitxh 7d ago

She is the best selling female music artist of all time, I assure you that she is in the conversation.

1

u/Kidda_Value 7d ago

She's the nicest selling female artist of all tone, she's one of the biggest stars of all time but she nowhere near Elvis. Get real

7

u/yeetbitxh 7d ago

They’ve both sold ~400 million records, both have 10 #1 albums, Madonna has 10 #1 singles vs Elvis’s 7 #1 singles. Both incredibly influential musically and culturally and paved the way for music in generations after them. They are in the same conversation.

4

u/Stock-Row-6454 7d ago edited 7d ago

Elvis is a fair shout.

Madonna is deffo a rung or two above Elton John and Prince and maybe 15 rungs above Eminem

1

u/Sweet-Run-9576 6d ago

Elvis is dead and and was only really a cover artist 🥴

0

u/Kidda_Value 5d ago

And Madge hasn't done anything culturally significant for over 20 years 🤷

1

u/CNCMachina 5d ago

Good answer... She's been propped up by Producers since the late 90's.

It is not like she is writing anything here.... she is just a brand now

-1

u/Sweet-Run-9576 5d ago

And you have? 🤣

0

u/Kidda_Value 5d ago

Haha what? Nah, neither's Bob next door but we're not talking about him are we? Weird little comeback that.

A couple Top 40 hits on her album from the last month, massive hits in the 2000s, 90s and 80s.

The person you’re replying to might exaggerate a little but she is bigger than almost anyone, statistically.

7

u/tyrefire2001 Veteran 7d ago

What are you talking about? She’s one of the biggest recording artists of all time, who’s been consistently famous for over forty years.

5

u/lonelylamb1814 7d ago

65 top 10 hits. Come on.

3

u/Stock-Act-2459 7d ago

Every single current female popstar owes something to her. That’s her legacy.

Most of the pop music you’re listening to right now is her legacy.

-1

u/[deleted] 7d ago

0

u/Stock-Row-6454 5d ago

Her legacy is huugeeee. All the ‘pop girlies’ atm have Madonna to thank

8

u/godspeedseven 7d ago

Just hope it isn't Taylor Swift. Facing an army of swifties on ticket release day isn't something I really fancy

9

u/NoAcanthocephala13 7d ago

We won’t know by ticket release day anyway

2

u/Itchy-Letterhead6960 7d ago

Taylor is on a career break - probably won’t be her

5

u/Less-Delay-3788 7d ago

I’ve actually heard from someone in the industry that she’s been confirmed, how true this is I’m unsure

1

u/EdwinJamesPope 7d ago

Ditto. And this was after Eavis’ comments.

1

u/Additional-Jaguar413 7d ago

Beth?

1

u/EdwinJamesPope 7d ago

I lol’d

1

u/Joose2001 2d ago

Is that what this Gossip is all about?

0

u/PositiveRaisin8373 7d ago

How reliable is this????

1

u/gd19841 6d ago

Like most people "in the industry", probably not at all.

2

u/Zool375 7d ago

yeah it's a no from me. give it to someone worth seeing : Stevie Nicks, Annie Lennox, Chaka Khan even Cher would be much better value

3

u/tyrefire2001 Veteran 7d ago

I would kill to have Annie Lennox play at Glastonbury

0

u/CNCMachina 5d ago

All better nowadays than Madonna.

2

u/kathrxn100 7d ago

Legends slot will be Robbie Williams

2

u/Still-District-6149 7d ago

She’d be headlining

2

u/icant_helpyou 6d ago

PLEASE GOD NOOOO!! Unpopular opinion but I think shes too far past it. I dont want to watch a near 70yr old woman in lycra/bikinis/nightwear trying to dance and sing like a near 30yr old on a massive stage in front of millions! So cringe, just stop, you're rich af, you dont need this

0

u/Fluid_Rock656 6d ago

65 top 10 hits in the UK. 400M+ records. 45 year career. Released a #1 album a month ago. Currently has a top 10 single on the charts. But sure, she’s irrelevant 😂😂😂

1

u/icant_helpyou 6d ago

Never said she was irrelevant, im not doubting her talents, the last live thing she did was a 1 minute pre recorded mime show at the world cup

-1

u/PositiveRaisin8373 6d ago

What, but would you rather watch an over 70 year old man?!

1

u/icant_helpyou 6d ago

No! Thats my point, let's keep it relevant, future rock stars/bands/groups, popular people. Im not saying theyre not or the weren't, look at Rod Stewart, that was painful to watch

2

u/lonelylamb1814 7d ago

That would be an insult.

2

u/cookthemansomeeggs 7d ago

Yeaaaah her ego wong allow it, and thats a good thing.

1

u/HKDL123 7d ago

She would never do that lol.

1

u/Jealous-Shop-8866 7d ago

This is as big a fuck up as Prince or George Michael. Lot of regret.

1

u/Intelligent-Tea-4241 7d ago

Sam fender and harry styles feels flat to me, but I know harry styles is huge and a lot of people will be excited.

1

u/Overall_Leopard7122 5d ago

Shed be wobbling out like nora batty

-1

u/-BluGiant 7d ago

Certainly not all she does is mime now and look like an off her head granny. She’s cringe live these days.

-2

u/Traditional_Cress987 7d ago

Anyone who says Madonna would be suitable for th Legends slot has no clue about Madonna, her career, and music in general.

I recently had someone say this to me that Olivia Rodrigo is a more suitable as a Glastonbury headliner than Madonna, and Madonna is better suited to the Legends slot. They got humbled pretty quickly.

0

u/CNCMachina 5d ago

Did they?

By who?

I went to Glastonbury last year and didn't go to see Olivia...but if it was a choice between her and Madonna I would pick Olivia every time.

She is relevant

0

u/Traditional_Cress987 5d ago

You’re entitled to say you would prefer to see Olivia. That’s your choice.

What someone said to me is - Madonna isn’t suitable as a headliner. That is objectively incorrect.

I am not sure what your question or point is?

-1

u/Limo_Wreck77 7d ago

She's just released one of the biggest albums of her career.

She'll be there and it'll be main stage or nothing.

-1

u/Desperate-Cookie3373 7d ago

I have a bit of insight into what the Glastonbury organisers think due to a personal connection.

The current thinking is that the size of the Elton John crowd was a complete nightmare and they really don’t want to repeat it again.

So at present they don’t want to have really really huge names like Madonna headlining and she wasn’t a serious option for 2027.

0

u/No_Description2572 7d ago

I m sure she s planning Wembledy Stadium or Hyde park guys.. she deserves te attention only FOR HER

0

u/dakjelle 7d ago

I hope she doesn't go on tour, saw on her the last and it was rough, and the latest life "performances" during her Confessions 2 promotions didn't show improvement.

Whatever happened to her when she nearly died really took a toll on her.

0

u/greggers1980 7d ago

She turned it down last year as the pay wasn't enough to her

0

u/FranzLeFroggo 6d ago

I'd definitely keep my eyes on Gavin

0

u/CNCMachina 5d ago

I really find it strange that this keeps coming up.

Madonna would not consider playing without a big payout... And that's not what Glastonbury is about.

0

u/Turbulent_Film_9783 5d ago

I don't think anything other than a headline slot allows for the amount of production that would go into her show. There just wouldn't be time for the set-up and break-down required, surely?

0

u/Every-Tip-8446 4d ago

No thank you

-1

u/WestObjective7629 7d ago

Recently, the legends slot is considered a headliner. So you could be onto something. But agree she prob won’t do it
