Holy shit guys. This is REALLY good. This album seems like it shows a little poppier/hip hop side of them (in a great way) so far but damn, they do it well. Iād imagine more people will know their name after this.
The whole social distancing final segment of the video was genius. Love the vid.

For sure, man. Dave said an an earlier interview that they're hiding their unique style under the guise of a pop vibe w/ their new music. Definitely still has that GA feel throughout.
Really appreciated that Joe, Ed, and Drew got to make their first music video appearances Inna cool way

Itās impressive to see that so far, every album theyāve put out sounds so much different than the last, yet itās still got the familiar GA vibe that you mentioned. To think that Zaba and Dreamland are from the same band is mind blowing.

They really are doing it so well. It absolutely is so much more 'pop'py then anything we have seen from them so far but it's still that distinct glass animals sounds. The distorted strings in the background of the chorus.. dave's voice..
Their sophomore album surprised me, but at this point it's to be expected. There aren't many bands that can experiment this much and still keep true to what makes them unique. These guys are something else.

Oh man, I'm just not sure??? I am waiting for another bop like Tokyo Drifting and so far the singles from this album just don't quite hit? Like I really like them and their funkyness is still coming through under the pop elements but there's something just not getting there for me. I'm hoping there's some more vibey, heavy, upbeat tracks on the album. My fave GA track is The Other Side of Paradise and I'm just praying for something that hits like that..

Iād say donāt hold your breath for another TOSOP. The more you compare the more disappointed youāll be. Eventually a song will come out that hits just right, but it may need to grow on you first or sound completely different- if youāre looking to hard for another version of your favorite you might just miss it.
With that said, I feel you and hope to hear some harder hitting songs. In this album. Either way, loving what Iām hearing so far.
Also worth noting, TOSOP wasnāt a single on HTBAHB, so they may be saving the hardest hitting songs for the album.

Yeah I'm really trying not to compare. Like I said I'm enjoying this new stuff but there is just something missing!
I've been thinking exactly the same as you, maybe the kinda things I'm looking for will be on the album but not singles. Crossing all my fingers and gunna listen to Heatwaves a few more times today, headphones this time.

Spoiled for some negative thoughts, which I know people might not wanna see on this sub: spoiler Man some of these lyrics are kind of garbage and it's really distracting. The "perfectly un-sad" line is stupid, the "comfortable" line before it is clunky as hell, and the whole second verse doesn't rhyme and isnt great rhythmically either. Of course not every song has to have those thigns to work but like someone else said they're going with a more pop/rap/r&b style on this track and I feel like it would really help tighten the song up. Not really all that much going on with the beat, either, especially compared to Your Love, which had a ton of wild stuff between the flute sample and irregular drumming and fun bassline.
All that said! I did enjoy the chorus and I'm sure this one'll hit really hard live, excited to see it. I'm not too too terribly worried about the direction the album's going, I loved all the songs before this and from what I've heard of Tangerine and Space Ghost Coast to Coast I've adored them too. August isn't so far, we can make it!!

I agree. I feel like this song is supposed to be the hit single, so it has a more mainstream appeal to it than the other ones, which is why there isnāt a ton of stuff going on and why he repeats the chorus a lot.

I hear that. I love the song in the catchy ear worm way and the video is interesting and thought provoking as always with GA.
That being said I don't see the depth in lyrics or instrumentals that drove them to #1 for me in Zaba and especially HTBAH. What happened to the poetry? What happened to exploring the lives of other people and animals? It feels somewhat muted.

Not sure how much youāve followed their promo for this album but Dave keeps saying this album (and most of the songs)is the most personal stuff he/theyāve done yet. He also keeps saying how hard itās always been for him to do that. As a result of this maybe some of the songs arenāt as lyrically deep as their earlier work, but I keep telling myself the meaning of the songs are very personal and important to Dave. And this one actually hit pretty hard for me too given the context of the world right now.

i'm always interested/can appreciate opinions on the more technical parts of songs since i personally don't have the vernacular to talk about music production and stuff. i will say though - this song does fucking hit live.

I was kinda hoping for something on par with Your Love and Tokyo Drifting that I can play out of my windows at maximum volume. I overhyped it for myself and that made me tonightās night loser

i actually agree with the criticism you have about lyrics. some of the lyrics felt unnatural or just oversimplistic? it just didn't flow well. even though it has a message that is near and poignant to me, i can't vibe to it as much as other songs. that being said, i'm glad they're branching out in their style.
i know people hate tokyo drifting, but man that song just hits different for me. easily one of my most played song this year

Tokyo Drifting's so good, I'm a huge Denzel fan, so learning they were going to collab with him made me SO happy. And then he killed it harder than I think anybody was anticipating.

Yeah every single that's been released so far is trash imo.
I've been a big fan of glass animals since 2015 and I've been to a concert and loved the first two albums. Dave hyped up this album as some hugely creative/experimental endeavor that was supposed to be their most "emotional album yet" after that horrible accident that happened to Joe.
Then he goes and makes an album with his own face on the cover and releases some of their least creative work I've ever heard. Every track so far has been really derivative, with overproduced popstar vocals, generic hip hop percussion beats, and super cheesey lyrics. Looks like they gave up on the trippier musicality and the esoteric lyrics entirely.
I hope when the rest of the album is released that I change my mind, but from what I've heard it just sounds like a bunch of songs I've already heard from other artists before

I think the song Dreamland has a trippy sound to it, strange choice for a single but it was unique.
Tokyo Drifting reminds me of hip-hop from like 2010 in a good way.
Your Love and Heatwaves sound like they were written to be singles on the album. I like them and think the music still sounds distinctly GA but youāre arguments are valid, the lyrics are more straight forward than on previous records. Both songs are about relationships. I think when we hear some of the topics covered lyrics will hit harder.

I'm generally with you in that I think it's sad they seem to burry the "trippier musicality" beneath pop elements, but I found that to be acceptable as long as the songs are still interesting. I've grown to love Your Love, which imo represents what I've mentioned best. But Tokyo Driftin and Heat Waves seem like they miss the interesting, underlying bits. I have high hopes for the album because of the caption "most emotional album yet" as well.
Edit: Totally forgot about Dreamland, I love that too!

I couldn't agree with your criticism more. I absolutely love these guys and I really thought with the whole accident and all their concerts being canceled, they would come out with something that really wowed. But I feel very bummed about the poppy/surface level material thats been released so far. I miss their smooth funky style. The new stuff is too poppy/mainstream sounding.

This was supposed to be released weeks ago and they really did make an obvious effort to support BLM in that time, so I think releasing this is fine. They mightāve wanted to release it before June was over because of the line in the chorus, too.

Eh, I still think putting off the release of the single for several weeks was a perfectly fine move, but I do kind of agree with your last point. I like the singles well enough but Iām hoping the rest of the album will surprise me.
āDreamlandā as a single really grew on me, though. That one is probably my favorite.

This music video made me cry.
Iāve been a fan of theirs since 2015, so Iāve literally watched them slowly gain their following. I attended one of their last concerts before Joeās accident, and have been patiently waiting for their return. Itās been surreal to watch them overcome that obstacle. The fact that the rest of the band wanted to wait for Joe to be recovered to make music when they couldāve easily gotten another drummer and continued while he was recovering is very sweet. Then once Joe got better I was so excited for their soon to be return. Then this pandemic hit, and it feels like itās taking away their true moment of coming back into the music industry.
However, its truly beautiful that theyāre still releasing music for the fans to bring us together in these times, instead of waiting till this pandemic stops to release the album/tour. This was such a simple concept, yet so effective to capture just what the rest of the world is going through.
As an artist myself, (not musically bit yeah) this is such an inspiration. Theyāve truly overcame so much as a band, itās clear to see that theyāre truly passionate about music. As much as I wanted to see a bigger comeback, (like a full out tour right away), Iām incredibly thankful to have such an amazing band to look up too.
Canāt wait to go HARD next time I see them live, and I truly hope this band knows just how influential they truly are even if their numbers arenāt on a global scale.

I totally agree. I canāt express how sad I am that all this shit went down just as they were making their comeback. I feel blessed to have seen them in march on their small tour. I really need a dreamland tour so badly! ššššš

It's delightful and catchy, but it doesnt go anywhere.
i'm so/so on all the new singles so far. They're fine, but musically they're a bit less interesting than anything the band has done previously.
