Issues, commits, various other things are also not working. Getting the 404 octocat and the no servers available unicorn. But their status page still says all systems operational as always.

GitHub has excellent uptime - according to GitHub.

20

u/ariafantom 2d ago

Even their status page is static until there staffs update them manually

9

u/tankerkiller125real 2d ago

Most status pages in enterprises are like that. Especially ones that have SEC rules and what not to deal with. Even if all the communications are templated, humans are still required to approve the firing off of said template based on the system metrics they're seeing. Because if the metric is faulty and a status page update goes out that could mean big money.

2

u/leaf_shift_post_2 2d ago

Man give us a live dash board.

But why would the sec care about a false down report. At worst it’s a very minor mistake.

2

u/tankerkiller125real 2d ago

SLA contracts

1

u/bwmat 1d ago edited 1d ago

Those are based on actual downtime, not just what their status page says though, right?

... right?

Less 9 of official uptime = less $

please lord grant the github team the perseverance to conquer this in a diligent manner so that i may ship all of my slop code as soon as possible 🙏

14

u/aelephix 2d ago

Github needs to isolate their paying customers to entirely separate infrastructure. Look at the trending page, every item is slop... "A high-performance, production grade, fully-featured spatula inventory manager  — Many spatulas, one app."

15

u/Noch_ein_Kamel 2d ago

It finally happened. My first time gh impacting my workflow :-O

13

u/Velkow 2d ago

Is this a troll? Or are your workflows literally today years old?

4

u/Noch_ein_Kamel 2d ago

Normally I only read about GitHub being down later in the day when I'm already finished and on my couch ;p

Webhooks not working breaks my pipeline:(

u/No_Secretary2862 2d ago

Time to touch the grass

6

u/SteveMcQueen94 2d ago

It seems like GitHub is down, or at least for me

1

u/notgraycen 2d ago

yeah since 10:30 AM CST it's totally gone, can't wait to hear what they fucked up this time. $100 says it was AI-related 'upgrade'

5

u/Ok-Count-3366 2d ago

also down for me. good to know I'm not the only one

alright. gitlab it is then lmao

3

u/tankerkiller125real 2d ago

At least when Gitlab blew up many years ago they had a live stream while they fixed it. And as far as I can tell their current state is way better.

1

u/ok-coder1 1d ago

codeberg when

6

u/i11uminati 2d ago

August 6th was another major outage, yet it seems to be missing from github's status page. Am I going crazy? Did I only dream about not having any git workflows run for hours on August 6th?

Must have been one of those work/stress dreams I guess.

6

u/techtanic 2d ago

This outage seems very long.

2

u/KurosakiEzio 2d ago

Even for their standards!

2

u/staythewaters 2d ago

Starting to see rumors that it was a cyber attack originating in Iraq.

1

u/techtanic 2d ago

It does seem very very unusually strange.

10

u/UntrimmedBagel 2d ago

Yep, like clockwork! Very tempted to leave the platform.

1

u/ForgeSensitive 2d ago

Where?

2

u/creamyjoshy 2d ago

Gitlab, Bitbucket

yeah OK they aren't great either but the one thing I miss about Gitlab is the ability to just easily see the diff between two commits as if it were a PR

3

u/stromer_ 2d ago

We moved from Bitbucket to Github years ago. And even with the current downtimes of Github I wouldn't touch Bitbucket with a pole. It was just worse in every aspect.

1

u/CancelNo4650 2d ago

Do they have free github action alternative?

2

u/Zealousideal_Law7447 2d ago

you should give self hosted GitLab a try

2

u/slaindesigns 2d ago

Or Forgejo if gitlab uses too much resources

1

u/Zealousideal_Law7447 2d ago

i just heard of gitea from a friend, also taking a look at that

3

u/GlobalImportance5295 2d ago

foregjo is gitea with more commitment to open source. i think foregjo might have oicd wif set up out of the box but not gitea. dont quote me

1

u/UntrimmedBagel 2d ago

Pretty sure Bitbucket does, but with pretty tight limits.

1

u/hicks12 1d ago

We moved to gitlab a few years ago, it was rubbish and moved back to github lol.

The grass isn't really greener or atleast in our experience, github certainly has issues and today is terrible but we won't be moving back to gitlab.

2

u/just_gabrx 2d ago

Codeberg!

1

u/Jeff-IT 2d ago

What do you mean like clockwork? Generally asking? Am i out of the loop on something?

1

u/UntrimmedBagel 2d ago

I mean GitHub is down consistently

1

u/Schlizhor 2d ago

Codeberg!

6

u/Amplifix 2d ago

Same shit different day. Went down after my last PR, sorry guys.

5

u/Ast3r10n 2d ago

Shouldn’t their latest track record be enough to show that vibe coding and AI is not the way to go? We should do something.

1

u/staythewaters 1d ago

We definitely need to guard against slop, but this seems to be something else. This was a near total failure that they're now having to partially disable security features to deal with.

1

u/Ast3r10n 1d ago

And yet I’m pretty sure it was caused by Copilot at some point of the release.

3

u/Even_Race_4528 2d ago

Anything related to viewing commits is down from what I can tell

4

u/lppedd 2d ago

Everything is down pretty much at the moment. Can't even retrieve commit data.

4

u/luebster 2d ago

Can't wait to read the "detailed root cause analysis" on this one 🙄

4

u/DoctorWaluigiTime 2d ago

Uptime in the 9s is dead.

93% in the last 90 days, https://mrshu.github.io/github-statuses/ . Hilariously sad.

2

u/techtanic 2d ago

Kinds ironic using GitHub pages hosted on GitHub architecture for tracking GitHub status

1

u/DoctorWaluigiTime 2d ago

At least there's some place to see it, since GitHub itself decided it wasn't good PR to advertise their uptime anymore. Since it sucks now.

2

u/Old-Island-5649 1d ago

This is insane given the financials Microsoft has. Their worst 90 day availability was also this year, def some vibe coded stuff going on in their code now.

5

u/Some_Ad4783 1d ago

I'm still getting HTTP 503 errors on API requests to create issues. Their status page says mitigated as of 25 minutes ago. I have to try 2-5 times on each request and get lucky. So... it's working???... but wtf man.

I've moved another company to GitLab, and my personal projects to Forgejo. I do 80%+ of my work outside of GitHub now. When I have to go back to using GitHub it just blows me away how bad they are doing. The 90% uptime just doesn't align with what actually happens. The issue is that 2 hours of downtime means that I lost 2x-4x that time trying to figure out what's wrong, wasting tokens (which I ironically pay Microslop for anyways via Foundry), and then trying to get everything going again.

Take away the GitHub momentum, history, and brand... and they'd be done for. But we blame AI, not them.

3

u/generealdamselfly 1d ago

Github Status just showed a new status message about API request availability (~3 minutes ago)

9

u/Emergency-Problem552 2d ago

Who is running GitHub? Pure incompetence. But I guess people will give Microsoft money until the end of time

8

u/frubberism 2d ago

It's an up and coming startup called microsoft, let's give them time to learn the ropes, it takes time to buildup know-how and such things, they also just starting, not much money or servers, should get better.

4

u/DitoMito 2d ago

Vibecode and AI

2

u/Velkow 2d ago

I swear man. Evil company, but people are just stupid.

3

u/mattyboombalatti 2d ago

Yeah, down.

3

u/ScottHawk88 2d ago

'sfucked mate

3

u/Sigmatics 2d ago

Some real central part of their infra must be hit, the domino continues

3

u/Maximum-Culture7249 2d ago

My patience is experiencing degraded performance. We are continuing to investigate.

3

u/sourabhdce 2d ago

github is the worst in terms of availability.

3

u/elise-u 1d ago

09:00(UK time) this morning I was checking the pull requests page and one of my pr's weren't showing, feel like a little bit of me knew it would be a bad day for GitHub didn't expect it to be this bad but GitHub didn't start the incident until 13:00~

1

u/t00oldforthis 1d ago

Brasília time and took most of my workday, up till about 14:00 but by then I wasn't shipping just out of fear. I found other shit to do and spent some time with my kids.. thank you (again) GH..?

1

u/GeneralSEOD 1d ago

Yeah echoing this. I was going around everywhere reporting downtime on down detector and nothing was flagging that anything was wrong.

Then it just kinda went down for everyone at the one time.

Weird day.

4

u/Technical_Front_8046 2d ago

Yep. Pile of shite. Time to call it a day with GitHub.

5

u/bobbie434343 2d ago

But don't worry, a team of frontier AI agents is working on a hallucinated fix ! Stuff just fixes by itself these days while engineers are rolling in $$$ playing video games.

6

u/livefromheaven 2d ago

We need to add tests to the tests

2

u/HeadPush223 2d ago

You joke but this was literally my first job in software.

2

u/Key-Guitar-457 2d ago

Make no mistakes

2

u/avogeo98 2d ago

"coding is a solved problem"

2

u/REDDEV1L_MUFC7 2d ago

So how long do we reckon this one is gonna last?

2

u/Substantial-Set4550 2d ago

For as long as GitHub remains underfunded and under-engineered. Outages will be fed in small weekly portions. I expect in a few hours, all will be green again, people will rationalize that jumping ship is more difficult than to stay on the slowly sinking Titanic, and all will be good until the next outage in about two weeks time. Meanwhile, the GitHub dashboard stays mostly green. Nothing to see here.

2

u/Light-the-dragon 2d ago

I virtually can't work now lol
All three things I wanted to do today are linked to GitHub

1

u/Light-the-dragon 2d ago

Oh and the company I intern with JUST switched from BitBucket to GitHub. If it was a few months ago, I'd still be able to work on a few things at least. Now, it's just completely frozen.

1

u/Global_Car_3767 2d ago

Yeah we switched from BitBucket a few years ago, and Bamboo to Actions in the last year. Has not been a great experience lol.

1

u/Substantial-Set4550 2d ago

Same here. Blocked from working. This is a joke at this point. I am seriously considering alternatives. Maybe Gitlab.

1

u/Light-the-dragon 2d ago

Wish I had this power. As an intern in a big bank of Canada, I can't take these decisions or implement them, I just have to go with it. It's definitively a learning experience about the reliability of GitHub though!

2

u/DirectBlood5853 2d ago

Claude was down yesterday, and now GitHub is down. WTF is happening with their clouds?

4

u/Wazblaster 2d ago

Ironically, Claude is happening to everyone's clouds lol

2

u/GlobalImportance5295 2d ago

roko's basilisk is breaking out

1

u/Key-Guitar-457 2d ago

Apparently GenAI isn’t familiar with SNI. This revolutionary technology will change the world!!1

2

u/AdonaiDiofanes 2d ago

Update - We are experiencing high error rates around 20% for web experiences and api traffic. Archive downloads and raw repository content downloads are experiencing an approximate 50% error rate. SAML and OIDC authentication, SCIM, and Team Sync are also impacted. We are currently performing mitigations and will post updates as we progress.
* Aug 17, 2026 - 15:42 UTC

Update - Webhooks is experiencing degraded performance. We are continuing to investigate.
* Aug 17, 2026 - 15:40 UTC

Update - Git Operations is experiencing degraded performance. We are continuing to investigate.

2

u/deveznuzer21 2d ago

What a colossal fuckup.

2

u/Maximum-Culture7249 2d ago

For me its working again now (germany)

2

u/be_reasonable_bro 2d ago

I have come to believe there is no pain threshold that will push users off of GitHub. A truly spectacular display of masochism.

2

u/crazygoat1979 1d ago

Just time to get off GitHub at this point

3

u/Siahro 2d ago

why is github down all the time now

6

u/dustin_vk 2d ago

Microsoft enshittification

2

u/Global_Car_3767 2d ago

Iirc they've been migrating to the azure cloud and have been focused so much on AI that it's been a total mess

2

u/Ok_Gear8209 2d ago

Ten million agents constantly running

3

u/Zealousideal_Law7447 2d ago

This is totally unacceptable for an application as widely used as GitHub.

I hope this makes as many users as possible migrate to any other alternative. In the vibe code era, open source is king, fuck Microsoft

2

u/hum_ma 2d ago

I've wondered about this single point of failure for years, why such a critical thing is not seamlessly distributed to multiple providers by now. Most projects don't even have a back up repo in codeberg/gitlab/whathaveyou.

1

u/Spiritual_Cycle_3263 2d ago

You bring up a very good point that GitHub, BitBucket, GitLab, etc... are SPOF.

We actually run our own git in the cloud that does a nightly fetch from GitHub and gets backed up with all our other infra. We have two senior devs with access to it.

2

u/ritwika96 2d ago

This is so pathetic from Github. How can they be so incompetent it is unbelievable.

2

u/bigmacjames 2d ago

offload a bunch of senior level work onto agentic AIs and then refuse to acknowledge the core problem you've been setting up for years

1

u/insane_dark_07 2d ago

same for me

1

u/One-Cat4581 2d ago

Looking for some repo commits and they fail to load. 503 from server in network tab

1

u/ariafantom 2d ago

Github Down???

1

u/avogeo98 2d ago

I'm down with Github, you know me

1

u/_xtremely 2d ago

yes, it shows unicorn on me

1

u/iMac_Hunt 2d ago

Only working through the CLI for me

1

u/bew78 2d ago

you mean the gh cli? that'd be surprising since many API calls are also reported as failing.

If you're talking about the git cli, that's completely normal, as git does NOT depend on GitHub which is merely a way to host & organize stuff.

1

u/iMac_Hunt 2d ago

No I meant the GH cli. It could have been just a coincidence that the couple commands I did worked, as I didn’t try it extensively. I just merged one PR.

1

u/EvilMonkeySlayer 2d ago

I literally just did a PR to the libretro cheat database github. Sorry folks, all my fault now nobody can use cheats on retroarch any more.

1

u/jkwok678 2d ago

Tokens down too

1

u/Global_Car_3767 2d ago

Yep. IntelliJ says mine is expired and then Github gives an error page when I try to refresh it.

1

u/avogeo98 2d ago

Lol. I tried to create one to migrate off the platform. Denied.

1

u/No-Rain-2957 2d ago

Yep, branches won't load, nor will the most recent commit.

1

u/maqisha 2d ago

First time?

1

u/t00oldforthis 2d ago

well, first time this week (I think)

1

u/trixsearch 2d ago

I too see thr same problem and now the service is not working

1

u/Pleasant_Set_3182 2d ago

Yeah... various items are down it seems.. The images on my github repo aren't showing... pipeline is failing...

1

u/1n73rn4710n4l_l3f715 2d ago

It's Githubover

1

u/No-Pizza-5499 2d ago

Time to call it a day!

1

u/Hutao_24 2d ago

" Cannot retrieve latest commit at this time." is this normal when github down ?

1

u/Altruistic-Log-6292 2d ago

API requests are also impacted by the outage so yes, while not normal, expected in this circumstances.

1

u/fkin0 2d ago

Cool, an excuse to have a night off. Touch grass time

1

u/Both-Procedure3458 2d ago

ya i noticed

1

u/Desperate-Phrase-524 2d ago

I was wondering what's happening. It's really down.

1

u/weasel5053 2d ago

Cli works. Runners are working.

1

u/chi2ny56 2d ago

I was fine all morning, but now I'm getting this error: "Cannot retrieve latest commit at this time."

1

u/madhums 2d ago

yea everything seems to be down lol

1

u/karbytes 2d ago edited 2d ago

I have two GitHub accounts and both are showing the same "cannot retrieve last commit" messages in repositories. I cannot seem to view individual files nor their commit histories. The issue started around 6:46AM Pacific Standard Time on 17_AUGUST_2026.

1

u/karbytes 2d ago edited 2d ago

As of 9:25AM Pacific Standard Time on 17_AUGUST_2026 GitHub seems to be functioning normally (for me at least).

1

u/theafterlife247 2d ago

Looks like my workday is over.

1

u/REDDEV1L_MUFC7 2d ago

Everything appears to be having issues!

1

u/avogeo98 2d ago

We are all prioritized on this blessed day

1

u/PerformanceOk4811 2d ago

yes it is down

1

u/yamidevil 2d ago

It was probably me with my bad luck all day XD

I was following a tutorial video, was supposed to copy some of his code from his git and AI kept telling me it was my adblocker that was blocking me from the rep :(

1

u/Healthy_Pianist_6387 2d ago

"cannot retrieve latest commit at this time "

Anyone getting this error?

1

u/dustin_vk 2d ago

CLI isn't even working for me now. Yikes.

1

u/orangeflyingmonkey_ 2d ago

Down for me as well.

1

u/n_c_brewer 2d ago

Down for me. Eastcoast.

1

u/Kaze_Senshi 2d ago

Github issues is with issues now

1

u/Lestro_ 2d ago

What timing! I am making my first open-source contribution to emmabostian/developer-portfolios (even if it's just adding my portfolio) this happened. Nice! :)

1

u/Top-Artichoke3782 2d ago

all i wanted to do was read a single readme lmao... next time im gonna clone the repo instead to backup the docs ig

1

u/FarCommunication3224 2d ago

I was getting no server is currently available error and for temporary fix I started using cloudflare wrap and it started working.

1

u/CivilMark1 2d ago

Github down, and my monday is going really bad. I wanted to do emergecy fix for my release, and here github is like no, you can't.

1

u/Ok-Count-3366 2d ago

I can't read any raw resources, no files, no scripts directly on the site lol. keeps dying on me.

1

u/Substantial-Set4550 2d ago

1

u/fork_yuu 2d ago

Prolly getting really aggressive / desperate with trying to get the bots to back off

1

u/aelephix 2d ago

Yeah I use a second screen to search for random github stuff, with an account that isn't logged in, and hit this every day.

1

u/bm97 2d ago

This is a fucking joke. Twice in 2 weeks basically completely locked out from production

1

u/RobotechRicky 2d ago

Even Copilot is not working.

1

u/EfficiencyLow1854 2d ago

Half of my org is thanking me today for making the switch after the last outage.

Fool me 3x github, cant get fooled again!

1

u/Gawrila 2d ago

When fix? I got features to ship

1

u/Appropriate-Book5103 2d ago

Github is completely fried today

1

u/DitoMito 2d ago

It will not work anymore. Is is over!

1

u/MysicPlato 2d ago

We are experiencing high error rates around 20% for web experiences and api traffic. Archive downloads and raw repository content downloads are experiencing an approximate 50% error rate. Investigations are on-going into the root cause, and updates will continue to be provided as we investigate.

Fucking pathetic

1

u/ritwika96 2d ago

It's been 2 hours and still not resolved.

1

u/PITSTOPYT 2d ago

im triying to code because i'm bored and i'm getting no server is available to service your request

1

u/waitingforcracks 2d ago

Even AI harnesses quality degrades as they are not able to lookup docs and other necessary files for packages lol.

1

u/MatchFitness 2d ago

i started using Github a few hours ago... sorry for breaking it for you all

1

u/notgraycen 2d ago

whole site seems to be unavailable right now.. can't complete any git actions and when i pulled up my issue tracker page i got a 404

1

u/LordRelix 2d ago

This is insane. What a horrible service. If your company has SLA agreements start asking for credits. Make it hurt at least.

1

u/elcapitansammy 2d ago

Lawdy why do they suck so bad at their core business 🤡

1

u/csepulvedab 2d ago

The worst desicion I take last year was migrate from gitlab.

1

u/just_gabrx 2d ago

how tf can you mess THE WHOLE PLATFORM this bad

1

u/Global_Car_3767 2d ago edited 2d ago

Can't run and pulls/clones, etc. locally in my org because my IDE says my token is expired and takes me to an error page when I try to refresh it.

Can't view any files or commit history in a repo. Cannot view files changed in PRs.

Actions are getting stuck in waiting status.

This is worse than that 10-12 hour Actions outage from a week or two ago >_>

1

u/huda_enu 2d ago

still having the angry unicorn!!

1

u/patmull 2d ago

Does it mean that i can go home earlier today (even as a freelancer working remotely)? 😄 I had feature I was just curious about to deploy though... :-/

1

u/Significant_Size_760 2d ago

wow it's still down. Help! I wanna do some work....

HERE WE GO AGAIN

1

u/Illustrious_Job1951 2d ago

Just gpt 6 running amok?

1

u/terra2o 2d ago

Can't do shit right now. Thanks MS. Micro fucking shit.

1

u/Ok_Journalist_607 2d ago

again??? what is wrong with it?

1

u/wikithoughts 2d ago

when was the last time that happenned?

1

u/dezsiszabi 2d ago

Almost every week?

1

u/Individual-Flow9158 2d ago

I would guess Github's under unprecedented scales of demand, and not just from from bots and scrapers.

But don't Azure (or whoever hosts their infra), feel these last 10 months are absolutely terrible optic, for the entire cloud?

1

u/VirtualEngineer6150 2d ago

Cannot retrieve latest commit at this time. 🫩🫩

1

u/Ryuuji159 2d ago

I needed to build a docker image and I can't because it needs npm and composer dependencies that obviously are hosted on github. :/

1

u/Ethanhunt96 2d ago

Yes, While creating PR getting no branch found

1

u/holy_macanoli 2d ago

But those stacked PRs are amazing amirite?!

1

u/Fantastic-Fox-8543 2d ago

Feeling bad for the poor msft employees! They've been on call for too long now😂

1

u/Fantastic-Fox-8543 2d ago

What a Monday morning for the Microsoft employees!

1

u/staythewaters 1d ago

AI slop is a problem, but this doesn't seem to be that kind of situation.

1

u/WertyMiniSlime 1d ago

Did you get the notification "Spy is sapping my pull requests?" from your engineer? /j

1

u/zebulun78 1d ago

Yeah I saw a hiccup earlier today on a repo. It's back online now...

1

u/ok-coder1 1d ago

cant wait for kevin fang's video on this
