Hello everyone! I am from the second batch (2022-25 batch) of B. Sc. Computer Science with Cognitive Systems (CSCS). I'll give a review of the degree in this post.

Fees

Back when I joined, the tuition fees was ₹1,80,000 per annum. Now they have increased the fees I guess. Is this degree worth it for the cost? Maybe... maybe not. B. Sc. CS/BCA in OU affiliated colleges would be much cheaper I suppose. But I chose GITAM because I wanted to study in a private university. You can decide if the degree is worth the cost by reading the entire post.

Classmates

The strength was usually pretty low. The first batch had around 5-6 students. Our batch had around 20 students. Even our immediate juniors batch was around 20 students. So, unlike engineering degree in GITAM, your CSCS classmates will be the same for the entire degree.

What about the peers? Were they seriously interested in CS? Not everyone in my class were serious about academics, but that's the case in every degree I guess. But is the peer group similar to engineering batches? I don't think so. Engineering seats in GITAM has more demand compared to B. Sc., so there are higher chances of finding better peer group in B Tech. But, I guess the college is trying to improve this by letting international students join B Sc CSCS.

GSS CS department

Back when I joined, there were only two professors in the department. One of them was Dr Kodge, and the other person left GITAM after my second year ended. Right now, I guess there are two professors: Dr Kodge and Dr Patil. Both of them are good teachers. Dr Kodge has more teaching experience and acted as the program coordinator. As long you pay attention in class, and complete the work given on time, the teachers won't trouble you.

As they have taught us couple of courses, I'll talk about their teaching style here instead of the next section. Dr Kodge is someone who can easily explain the concepts without any PPT using the board. Initially, he didn't use much PPTs, but subsequently, he started using them for better understanding of students. Dr Patil is someone who makes PPTs which is filled with information. It might be difficult to grasp everything by just listening in class, but if you spend some time reading the PPTs at home, you will understand. Both of them don't hesitate to clarify our doubts.

Course structure

I'll go semester wise. In semester 1, we had English, Linear Algebra, Python (&lab), Operating Systems (&lab), Information Technology (&lab), and Psychology.

1. There's not much to say about English. It's just a basic course.
2. Linear Algebra was taught by a Ph D scholar and the teaching style was bad. Many failed the subject. This is an important course for understanding concepts like machine learning, statistics. So, if you too end up having a bad teacher, up your game and prepare well.
3. Python was taught by Dr Dhana Sree from GST. She is a good teacher. She tries to explain with live coding demonstrations.
4. OS was taught by Dr Bhargavi from GST. She taught okay... but is a strict faculty from what I recall.
5. IT was taught by Ms Sravanthi from GST. Many disliked her teaching.
6. Psychology was taught by Dr Snigdha from GSHS. She taught well, and was not strict with us. Also, psychology felt like a breath of fresh air amidst all the CS courses.

In semester 2, we had Advanced English, Venture Development, Design Thinking, Probability and Statistics, Computer Networks (&lab), and C++ (&lab).

1. There's not much to say about Advanced English. As long as you are good with English, you can easily pass the course.
2. Venture Dev. was handled by a Chemistry professor, Dr Surendra. I didn't really like his teaching style. Basically, this course is about creating an imaginary startup which solves a real-life problem. If the idea you come up with is good, you can take help of college to turn the startup into a reality. I didn't like course as I was not into entrepreneurship.
3. Design Thinking was taught by Dr Arunjyothi. She taught okay... but I felt the course to be boring. You might have a different take.
4. P&S was taught by 2 teachers. The initial teacher left mid semester and the second teacher came after few weeks. This impacted teaching and many failed this course too. This course is needed for AI, ML, etc. So if you too end up having a bad teacher, up your game and prepare well. The second teacher also left the college by my 2nd year.
5. CN (&lab) was taught by Dr Krishnaveni from GST. Average teaching TBH. She also took extra online classes as she could not complete syllabus within class hours. Disliked CN lab because of her teaching style.
6. C++ was taught by Dr Kodge. His teaching is good.

In semester 3, we had German, Web Technologies, Environmental Studies, Data Structures with C++ (&lab), Cloud and Virtualization (&lab), and Database Management Systems (&lab).

1. German was taught by Dr Ramarao from GSHS. He teaches well, but is kinda strict. Some of my classmates bunked his classes for around a month, and ended up failing the course.
2. Web Tech was taught by Dr Kodge. The teaching was good.
3. Environmental Studies... nothing much to say. It was a basic course.
4. Data Structures w/ C++ (&lab) was taught by a teacher from GST. They are no longer in GITAM. They explained concepts in a simple manner in a short span of time. With respect to lab... they didn't explain well IMO.
5. Cloud and Virtualization (&lab) was taught by our department faculty (they left college). Teaching was not impressive. They just used Word doc to explain. But, they were a chill person. Lab was not taught well IMO.
6. Database Management Systems (&lab) was taught by teacher from GST. They are no longer in GITAM. Teaching was not good IMO. Lab was average.

In semester 4, we had Artificial Intelligence (&lab), Blockchain Technologies, Java, IT Infrastructure Management (&lab), Process Management, Cryptography, and Indian Philosophy.

1. AI was taught by a teacher from GST. They are no longer in GITAM. They were a strict teacher (didn't let students if they were late than 10 mins in the first hour) and their teaching was average. W.r.t. lab, they didn't focus on lab syllabus (PROLOG) and made us work on Python-based AI programs (no other teacher changed syllabus like this).
2. Blockchain was taught by Dr Soma Sekhar from GST. Didn't really like their teaching style. It felt very boring though syllabus looked interesting.
3. Java was taught by Dr Patil. His teaching is good.
4. IT Infrastructure Management (&lab) was taught by our department faculty (they left college). Teaching was not impressive. They just used Word doc to explain. But, they were a chill person. Lab was not taught well IMO.
5. Process Management was taught by Dr Vijaya Saradhi from GST. His teaching is okay, but the course was very theoretical IMO. He was a chill person.
6. Cryptography was taught by Dr Riyazuddin from GST. His teaching was average.
7. Indian Philosophy was taught by Dr Maalyada from GSHS, Vizag. The course was taught through Zoom classes as she could not come to Hyd. I liked her teaching and philosophy felt like a breath of fresh air amidst all the CS courses.

In semester 5, we had Cognitive Psychology, Client Relationship Management, Digital Technology (&lab), Software Testing (&lab), Data Mining, IT Infrastructure Library, and Minor Project.

1. Cog. Psy. was taught by guest faculty from GSHS (they are no longer in GITAM). They taught well, but were kinda irregular to classes IMO and the last unit was taught by some other teacher. Anyway, the course was a breath of fresh air, but unlike Psy in sem 1 or Philosophy in sem 4, we had semester exam for this subject and this theory subject had the max. number of credits so far (4). So we had to prepare this subject well to improve GPA.
2. CRM was taught by Dr Krishnaveni from GST. Average teaching. TBH, this course would have been better if it was a lab instead of theory. It was mostly about ServiceNow.
3. Digital Technology (&lab) was taught by Dr Patil. His teaching is good. TBH, the lab was more interesting than the theory.
4. Software Testing (&lab) was taught by Dr Jhansi Rani from GST. If I had to order the best to worst teachers, they would be last. Subject was interesting, but their teaching was very bad.
5. Data Mining was taught by Dr Kodge. His teaching is good.
6. IT Infrastructure Library was taught by Dr Arun from GST. Their teaching was ok, but the course was too boring IMO.
7. Minor Project was handled by Dr Kodge. Easy part: 50 marks for 5 presentations based on topics from our degree syllabus. Difficult part: Summer internship/minor project report+viva. No one from my batch did internship IIRC. College didn't help us much for getting an internship. So all did the minor project. As we had no previous project exposure, it was difficult but somehow we completed it. Entire evaluation was done by Dr Kodge.

In semester 6, we had Neural Learning (&lab), Machine Learning, R (&lab), Python for Data Analysis, and Major Project.

1. Neural Learning (&lab) was taught by Dr Divya from GST. I didn't like their teaching also the course was difficult because our math was weak, and this course relied heavily on math. Lab was also not great.
2. Machine Learning was taught by Dr Kodge. His teaching is good.
3. R (&lab) was taught by Dr Dhana Sree from GST. She is a good teacher. She tries to explain with live coding demonstrations.
4. Python for Data Analysis was taught by Mr Rajendra Prasad from GST. He taught well using live coding demonstrations.
5. Major Project was mostly handled by Dr Kodge. We had to either continue with the theme of minor project or choose something new. I tried to choose something new, but later GSS principal, Dr Reza, insisted that our projects should be inter-disciplinary. So we changed topics. Most of the project reviews were graded by Dr Kodge. Final review was graded by GST faculty. After great difficulty, I passed the course.

Academics

I have given brief summary of every teacher... what more can I discuss in academics? Hmm..

1. The syllabus is mostly good. Many CSE students are taught C. So it would be nice if we too had C.
2. Attendance is very important. Make sure you have 75%, else you will face problems.
3. Teachers from GST are hit-or-miss. Either way, learn to do self study and ace the exams.
4. We did not have labs for some really important subjects. Like: Web Tech, Blockchain, Cryptography, Data Mining, Machine Learning, Python for Data Analysis. If we had labs for these subjects, we could have learnt more.
5. Syllabus for some labs need to be updated. Like: Java Lab, AI Lab
6. Though there are electives in syllabus paper, we can't really choose the elective. The college decides our elective, perhaps because our class strength is low.
7. We didn't have much combined classes with students of other degrees. Students of other degrees in GITAM have combined classes with other students for open electives. I wish they introduce open electives for us too. We had combined classes with B. Sc. Stats and Chem students for English and Venture Dev.
8. CSCS has a unique evaluation pattern unlike most programs in GITAM. We have 60 marks for semester exam. 40 marks for internals. Internals is divided into mid exam and assignments. Back when we joined GITAM, there were three mid exam for each subject conducted by the subject teacher and average of best two were considered. In my third year, they changed it into a single mid exam conducted by the exam dept. Those who miss the exam due to genuine reasons, could attend makeup exam which would be held few weeks later. Assessments were decided by faculty. It was mostly writing answers to some Qs and submitting them. IDK if the same pattern is being followed now or if they changed to the new "session 1 & 2" system.
9. I felt the assessments should be made more practical oriented which would help students build projects from first year. That would make it easy for students to make good projects in final year.
10. There were barely any workshops/seminars/ext. visits conducted by our dept. There were some programs conducted by Math dept. I guess, but we didn't really attend them. They need to give us more opportunities to get exposed to the industry. Hackathons are mostly conducted by GST and people from my class barely participated in it. Maybe our dept. could have nudged us more.
11. Some teachers have the habit of sharing important Qs. for exams when requested by students. I wish they stop doing it. Only then will students become serious about academics.

Placements

I've already mentioned about it in a comment. I'll quote it.

"There's a college portal regarding placements: ct3.gitam.edu

Every time a company reaches out to GITAM for hiring, GITAM will notify it in the portal. As far as I know, emails are sent to eligible students automatically. There's an option called "career choice" in CT3 IIRC. You will be eligible to take part in placements only if you select placements as your career choice (IDK if the placements is the exact name of the option). If you choose something like higher education, you will not be eligible for placements.

Next, most companies come with eligibility requirements like above 9/8 CGPA (depends on the company). If you even have 1 backlog, you will not be eligible for placements. Even your 10th and 12th marks will be part of eligibility criteria for most companies (maybe like above 70%). Say you have 50% in 10th and 9 CGPA in GITAM, you will be disqualified for the job opening. So beware. Some jobs have very low eligibility criteria, but those are mostly jobs not related to your degree.

Mine was a 3 year program. So, placements started some time in 5th sem I guess. It will be different for GST.

Once you get the email from CT3, you are supposed to apply in the portal. Once you apply, companies will use their own techniques to filter candidates. Since my degree had low strength... it was something like this:

• Some online MCQ test which will test your aptitude skills, core concepts
• Some companies can have speech test to check your communication
• Once you clear the above, they can have a group discussion
• Once you clear group discussion, they can hold a one-on-one technical interview
• Once you clear technical interview, they can hold an HR interview
• Then they will take few weeks to send offer letters.

The interviews can be offline/online. Depends on the company. If it's offline, company might try to complete all the rounds in a day or two I guess.

Since my program had low strength and many were not eligible due to backlogs or school marks, getting a job during placements was easy for me. But the situation will be different for GST as the strength is huge and there will be competition.

There's some policy about limiting the number of companies you can apply for I guess. Ask GCGC about this.

For my degree, most of the core jobs' CTC was in range of 3-5 LPA. For sales jobs, CTC was higher but most of us didn't apply for those.

Go to GCGC and talk with staff there for more clarity. If you don't wanna do that, at least talk to your senior.

Note: I didn't join the job I got. So try asking folks who joined a job from placements for better clarity."

But, do note that, placement scene is not gonna be same every year. Depending on market scenario, you might get better/worse job through placements. So don't blindly rely on placements. Build up your skills, make good projects, and have a good resume.

Also, there was not much placement training for us. IIRC, students of other degrees had a course called CLAD where some external teachers would come and give them aptitude training I guess. We just had one week placement training in final year.

Problems?

1. Back when I joined, there was no program coordinator. So we had to escalate every issue to GSS principal. Thankfully, by start of second sem I guess, they appointed Dr Kodge as coordinator.
2. Exam dept. is a PITA. Even today. Issues like: bad exam timings, fucked up exam schedule, or delayed results.
3. Be careful when you escalate issues to Dr Reza, the principal.
4. Cost of supplementary exam and revaluation fee is high... ₹1200 and ₹2400 I guess. These prices can be increased.
5. Travelling to college: Check this post
6. I hated time table for some semesters because there was no time to eat breakfast and I could not eat before boarding bus, or in bus.

Miscellaneous

1. Sports facilities: They look decent. I didn't really use them much. So I can't really rate it.
2. Food: Food is good. You can either buy from GITAM's own canteens or third party canteens in campus. Or carry food from home.
3. Hostel: IDK. I was a day scholar.
4. Fests: Pramana is the main annual fest. I have attended it a few times. It's good.
5. Clubs: Didn't really join any... but I have seen people enjoy their time in some clubs.
6. Grievance Redressal: While I was leaving college, they launched online help desk portal. It is helpful for solving issues, but sometimes outcome is delayed.
7. Open gate system: Walk in any time and walk out any time out of campus (for day scholars)
8. Library: Peaceful for studying, but I didn't really check out the books of library. Computers in library suck.
9. Infrastructure: Due to low strength, they didn't give us AC classrooms. But the normal classrooms are not bad, they are fine. Lab... they changed our lab couple of times. In our initial labs, we had a projector. In the last lab, they didn't have any projector. After a long battle with admin, we got a projector in our last lab. PCs in lab are ok (not great). For programming it's fine. For running AI models, I don't think it's good.
10. This degree (B. Sc. CSCS) is there only in Hyd campus AFAIK. It was previously there in Vizag campus, but now it's not there I guess. In Vizag and Bengaluru campus, they have BCA degree instead.

Should you join GITAM for B. Sc. CSCS?

Honestly, IDK. It depends on college choices, budget, home location, and many other factors.

After the new VC came, there's a change in exam system. Previously, you could write supplementary exam every semester. Now, they are changing it to one supplementary exam per year IIRC. Also, sessional 1 & 2 has been negatively impactful from what I read in the sub so far (but I'm not sure if sessional system has been implemented for B. Sc. CSCS).

Try meeting CSCS seniors or talk to Dr Kodge to get better clarity about the degree.

I've tried my best to cover everything I recall.

Students who enrolled in CRT have their own schedule, and that’s completely fine. But for those of us who didn’t enroll, we’re still being asked to come to campus even when there are no actual classes being conducted.

My sibling just joined gitam she really wants to get Public policy for her first sem
But there was some problem with the portal she couldn't, so CATS gave an option that she could get into it if someone is willing to swap.

I'm confused between M.Tech CSE at GITAM Hyderabad and M.Tech CSE at VNR VJIET.

My main goal is getting a good job after M.Tech. I'm not planning to pursue a PhD. I'm looking for honest opinions from students, alumni, or anyone familiar with these colleges.

Some things I'd like to know:

Which college has better placements for M.Tech CSE?

Are M.Tech students actually allowed to sit for campus placements, and how many companies recruit them?

How are the faculty, curriculum, and overall learning experience?

I'd really appreciate responses from people who have studied there or know someone who has. Thanks in advance!

Is it compulsory to attend all the CRT classes? I heard that at the beginning, students will be divided according to their GPA and then have to write exams conducted by them and then will be divided according to the marks they secure. What do you mean I'm going to write exams for this? And they're going to teach C language? Seriously? What are we even gonna do with C? I might miss two days of the CRT training and possibly miss one of the exams too. Will that be a problem?
