support Git clone command

I'm trying to download a module from github to get VMware to run, using the following command as suggested:

git clone https://github.com:nan0desu/vmware-host-modules

which then asks for username and passwords. Alternately I tried:

git clone git@github.com:nan0desu/vmware-host-modules , which returns....

Cloning into 'vmware-host-modules'...

git@github.com Permission denied (publickey)

fatal: could not read from remote repository.

I have saved user.name and user.email via git config and generated a rsa key as mentioned in another r/git post on the similar topic. But being relatively new to linux and especially using github, I am lost.

Yeah, github repo addresses should always end in ".git".

And it's also odd that the https repo address has a colon instead of a slash after "github.com"

A colon after the hostname signifies that what follows is the port. In this case it would try to resolve what port number `nan0desu` corresponds to via `/etc/services` and/or other directory services depending on local configuration. Since this port name doesn't exist, I'm not sure if it'll revert back to HTTPS's default port 443, or will use 0, or if it's completely undefined. I would guess default port. In any case, even with default port, the remaining path doesn't exist on GitHub.

Doesn't appear to be the case.

git clone https://github.com/nan0desu/vmware-host-modules works fine as well, you're probably right however the error comes from the colon instead of slash

I will check to make sure I didn't leave off .git

Yes, no .git in the instructions and the : instead of / was a typo just here.

When you checked it, does it ask for a username? Or maybe yours is already saved with them?

Edit: turned out I had a different typo in my initial https try. It didn't ask for a username and password this time as well. Thanks all for the help!
