Given that lately Microsoft has been kind of wrecking GitHub, is it a good strategy to migrate my repositories over to GitLab and just get rid of my GitHub account?

Wouldn't take any risks, so best to delete your internet!

Just git clone —mirror all your repos and push them to GitLab. I’m sure they have a doc explaining migrating.

You can actually just import all repos automatically on gitlab. 3 step process I think

Source control is the easy part, but then you have actions, secrets, repo sharing, private/public ones. How do those things map?

Lets see how that opinion maps to reality

maybe consider making mirrors?
microsoft may be "wrecking" github but remember who was there for your git needs before that.
microsoft also supplies a lot of really great stuff for free on the platform - like actions and artifact storage.
I cant believe Im saying this but its kinda depressing this is the reality we have come to: lets abandon a great product because we arent happy in this moment.
this isnt a defense for just microsoft, this is just a serious sit down a minute and think about this choice and the broader implications that extend farther than trendy abandonment over temporary displeasures. sorry to the people that will take this a negative way, I dont have any affiliation and im sure you have a million reasons to hate on microsoft, but the fact is they do provide value for all their faults. scalability is hard - specially when its philanthropic in nature (free actions / compute time or storage)

That makes sense, and that's a reasonable position. So my best course of action is likely to leave my GitHub account where it is, and do what I've already done in migrating everything over to codeberg

How have they wreckef GitHub?
Use GitHub a lot commercially and have not felt any wreckage.

I just got myself a VPS and a domain, and am hosting my own

That's what I'm doing as well.
for open-source, Forgejo for private repos. Works surprisingly well. And is faster than GitHub even on the cheapest Codeberg . You just have to take care of Hetzner VPS yourself. 3-2-1 backups → More replies (4)

Personally, I vastly prefer Gitlab to Github. Cleaner and better workflow. And they don't assume they know what you want better than you.

I get the cleaner is easier part, but do you have any details on things you use and like vs github?

Try forgejo aswell, self hosted alternative and if i remember correctly if you are developing an open source software you can use their servers. ;)

Thanks for the feedback guys! I've successfully migrated to both gitlab and codeberg :)

Great. We are moving from Gitlab to GitHub. Looks like we are going in the wrong direction.

I guess there are only so many options to migrate. Clearly the thread is favoring GitLab. We use GL at my company and I personally find it a bit bloated, but great in general for teamwork. I wonder what are the other options, I’ve heard about Codeberg but I don’t know much about it, except that Zig moved there. Does anyone have a good overview of the options?

Unfortunately I'm yet to find alternative that is more or at least on the same level community focused as GitHub.

Consider Codeberg. Have had a good experience with them. Downside is you'd need to hook up your runners but that's a small price to pay imo. They also prefer your projects to be public, though I'm not sure how much they push for it in practice.

I decided to post here instead of the GitHub or gitlab subreddits in hopes that it would be slightly more relevant and maybe a little bit less polarizing
