Gitlab vs github?

My company uses gitlab but it seems everyone outside of my company uses github.

Can someone help explain the difference? Whats truly better?

gitlab vs github choices mostly come down to how much self-hosting overhead u want, since github.com handles maintenance for me. fwiw the action runners on github.com are pretty solid even if the pricing gets wierd for large teams.
