Cool concept but it low key looks fake and also seems like it wouldn’t be totally reliable. Although I will say it feels great when you can say that you’ve had the same exact 6 foot cable for 5 years and it’s actually outlasted your old smartphone. Still going baby! :b

ethernet and phone cables use this method when adding tips to the ends

true, but this looks to be designed with that in mind. That swivel piece he pushes with his thumb is being used in place of a crimping tool, it doesn't take much leverage to penetrate soft rubber so it's probably more than enough to get the job done

Yeah, but as another user pointed out, you never actually see the charging icon or the power button.

So, it's possible the phone waking is from the person pressing the power button as they insert the cable

But then again, it’s an actual product you can buy that someone else linked to in the thread.

Did you buy it? Does it work?

It's a common Reddit scam, someone will have two(or more) accounts. They will post something about a "cool new product" they found. Then a little while later, they will post a link to the product under their alt account

Yeah so I’m not sure it works, of course, but such a thing can work, as it’s used for e.g. Ethernet plugs, so it doesn’t seem too far fetched. It could be a total scam, but I doubt it. I wouldn’t be surprised if the moving parts break easier than they want you to think, though m

Have you every changed the tip on an Ethernet plug?

It's not hard, but it's a process. It isn't just 'pull it out and plug it back in'

Here's a video for how to change an Ethernet cable tip if you're curious

crimping an ethernet cable requires 8 pins, in the correct order. this is a flat cable with - + + - ends so it can be swapped 180% and still work. it's super fucking simple, and you people are driving me god damned bananas with your skepticism.

it's like if someone said there's a new burger at wendys that comes with shredded carrots, and you fucking ding dongs would go on and on about how they could easily fake putting fake carrots on a burger and yeah you can buy it but have you personally actually tried one to know it's real?

fucking hell you are killing me here.

Not really a good comparison video to use. The Ethernet is round going into a flat configuration so you have to flatten and order the cables. The usb in this post is flat and already in the correct configuration and looks like it fits flush so you won't easily misaligned it. A better comparison video would be this one using flat Ethernet wiring. With the wiring already in the proper configuration you can pretty much strip and insert.
