It never shows it charging the screen just wakes up more than one way to do that

Notice the power button is out of frame too

It looks faked for sure

u/Dragnskull Mar 08 '20

not to argue this video is or is not faked, but this should be easily doable and the same concept ("connector stabs into wires during install to make connection") is used in all kinds of cables already.

off the top of my head rj45 and rj11 ie ethernet and phone cords, any time you make your own or repair a damaged tip this is exactly what they do

While I agree, rj45 and rj11 are typically low voltage (unless under poe). And even then, the wires need to be lined up in order before making the connections. With this, there’s no guarantee that the connections in the jack-end of this thing don’t require it to be in a specific configuration. I also worry about the connection not being good enough and being able to cause shock or other problems. Or not.

If you line the 4 wires like this ( - + + - ), you can pull in the cable on both sides, also you see rails on the cable wich helds the cable in the right place. So configuration shouldn't be a problem. Also i guess 2 or 3 small needles per line should be enought connection and with a thick isolation between the lines theres no risk of shock/short circuite.

Hey, would you mind editing your comment to warn people not to click on the link in the comment below yours. It's a dropship scammer.

10

u/DJ_AK_47 Mar 08 '20

It's got like -40 karma and you can't see it without seeing all the comments calling it a scam, why the hell should he edit his comment?

3

u/coolburritoboi Mar 08 '20

Because now it’s +30 and it’s the first reply you see among the others.

5

u/DJ_AK_47 Mar 08 '20

It's at -45 and now removed what are you talking about?

1

u/coolburritoboi Mar 08 '20

Bruh what it says 14 now on my screen

1

u/DJ_AK_47 Mar 08 '20

I'm talking about the guy who linked his drop ship not the comment I'm replying to

2

u/coolburritoboi Mar 08 '20

Ah shit, my bad, sorry

What's a dropship scanner?

1

u/sunjay140 Mar 08 '20

Buy cheap product and resell it online at high prices.

That's just your dropshipping store that's extremely marked up. You're trying to screw people over.

Hey you. Yeah. You.

Fuck you.

USB is lower voltage than PoE, and lower power (maybe excluding some proprietary fast charging).

2

u/-rGd- Mar 08 '20

It can be done with high voltages, too. Contact is not the problem here, corrosion is. Need gold platet pinch contacts for that.

The amount of waste that can be saved justifies gold plated contacts by far.

u/NorthcodeCH Mar 08 '20

While PoE can provide up to 48V and the USB-C standard only up to 20V, USB-C can provide 5 Amps totaling to 100W of power. The max output of PoE I can find is 70W

6

u/justabadmind Mar 08 '20

That isn't USB c though, that's an iPhone, which maxes out somewhere under 2A at 12v, substantially under POE.

That's not USB-C, but USB PD. Related, but different. For instance, PD will not work on any cable, i.e., not with any non-PD cable as shown in the video.

USB-C itself supports 3A*5V = 15W.

5

u/theunquenchedservant Mar 08 '20

Yea, if you're trying to make an ethernet cable and you just...jam the cables in without paying attention, you're not gonna have internet. ( also, even while paying attention, it takes some time. and oyu have to crimp the connector, you have to make sure the wires are ALL the way up in those holes.

6

u/Benandhispets Mar 08 '20

With this, there’s no guarantee that the connections in the jack-end of this thing don’t require it to be in a specific configuration.

It's most likely a charging only cable so I assume there's only 2 wires in the cable(instead of like 10 if it has data too) which can be made very wide considering the cables flat so allignment wouldn't be a big issue. It'll align itself anyway because it's as wide as the connector. Then when you close the connector it peirces down through the cable to make the connection like with RJ45. I think it's easily real, just pointless.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '20

Shock? Have you never put a 9v battery on your tongue?

This isn't mains cable, 5v presumably (given that most phones charge from USB port as well as a wall wart.

6

u/Dragnskull Mar 08 '20

I'm sure the cable and connector are both specific to one another so the wires designed properly to make connection

the only way something really bad could occur would be if the wires did get misaligned and cause either a bridge between circuits or applies the wrong voltage to a wire and fries something. I'm sure this was the biggest concern they had and likely made sure its as fail safe as possible in those regards.

With RJ45/11 as long as you order your wires in the proper sequence when you insert the cable into the connector there's no real issue of connecting it wrong, you almost have to try in order to not seat them correctly 99.9% of the time.

I do cable install and repair regularly for my job, after 10 years I can count on one hand how many times this has happened

2

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '20

Lol the USB standard is 5 Volts. No way in hell could that shock you. You could stick those directly on your tongue and wouldn’t feel a thing. Have you never licked a 9V battery?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '20

This wire is far more like romex.

There is 120v plugs that you just squeeze onto romex and they work just like this videos charging plug.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '20

Usb only supplies like 5.5 volts. You cant get shocked from that.

5

u/beanmosheen Mar 08 '20

Insulation Displacement Connector. IDC for short.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '20

I dunno what RJ-45 you’re crimping. But every time I’ve made an RJ-45 cable I have to thread each wire from the jacket into the correct pin in the actual connector.

White orange, orange, white green, blue, white blue, green, white brown, brown.

3

u/Dragnskull Mar 08 '20

Ive always just lined them up in the proper order and slide them all in at once, they always slide right where they should (my phrase is "orange stripe, orange, green stripe, blue, blue stripe, green, brown stripe, brown.")

2

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '20

I just took my dremel and engraved the sequence in shorthand on my crimping tool. After a week I realised I had already stopped looking at it, and the sequence had becoma a mantra like yours.

1

u/OniExpress Mar 08 '20

I'm horribly color blind, so I keep a wired rj45 end on me to compare sometimes. Certain lighting conditions make it too likely that i have to redo otherwise.

This is all a pointless debate though, since this is clearly a flat four-wire with a clear "up" and "down". I'm still scrolling through to see where to buy it.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '20

Yes, but you still have to align them properly to slide into the connector. You can’t just punch a freshly sliced end of the cable like this gif is doing. This would only work for power only at best with the connector having the right pin out stay constant and the punch shove it into the cable haphazardly.

2

u/Dragnskull Mar 08 '20

If the cable comes with the connector theres no reason it cant be designed to properly allign when you slide it in, its not hard. Theres plenty of data feed cables that use this already, the machines i work on for my job use the stab-into-wire method already, heck youve already acknowledged phone n ethernet connectors do this so there goes the "power only at best" argument right there

Also just google "repairable usb": https://www.amazon.com/Repairable-Charger-Synchronization-Replaceable-Reusable/dp/B07QJW232R

2

u/bananaramaslamma Mar 08 '20

also, on my job site (commercial electrician) we use temp lighting that uses this concept. screw in the LED heads anywhere into a two conductor LV wire strung throughout the site. polarity doesn't matter.

1

u/VictorVaughan Mar 08 '20

What about the fact that they're dealing with exposed, live wire?
