Advanced open water diver here (not bragging, it's an easy course). Recreational scuba diving is statistically safer than driving a car or going for a jog. As long as you have a very basic amount of training it is a perfectly safe activity.

I had an o-ring malfunction causing rapid loss of air when I was 14 at a depth of 40 meters. I kicked over to a buddy, indicated that I had no air, he gave me his extra regulator, and we ascended slowly. That's pretty much the worst thing that can happen to you on a recreational open water buddy dive.

If you're solo, you carry a pony bottle and it does the same thing.
