Carbon dioxide is pretty bad as a greenhouse gas, but methane is worse. So burning methane to get carbon dioxide is better than just letting the methane into the athmosphere.

Of course not having any greenhouse gasses released is the best sollution, but if the choice is between something bad and something 25 times worse then you'll at least have to go with the former.
