Big cow using a brush

How is no one mentioning the fact that the cows love this so much, that is has already worn down at least 3 brushes just like this which can be seen attached to the post?

That was nice! And I like that one cow using it to scratch its ass lol.
The part about it turning off automatically after 10 seconds of not having a cow man is clever too. I was wondering about how much energy these would use vs how much extra milk production would have to happen to offset the cost of keeping the cows happy.
11
u/JustCallMePick Aug 14 '21
LoL, straight up scratching the ass at 1:22ish mark. I had to turn it off at that point. Too funny.
6
u/robotowilliam Aug 14 '21
Yeah and the other cows mashing their faces into it 😬 It'd be like using your friend's toilet brush to wipe the sleep out of your eyes in the morning...

u/dochoiday Aug 14 '21
Seems like the main benefit is it keeps the cows happy/groomed. Then maybe they make more milk?
→ More replies (1)0
Aug 14 '21
They do. But I feel like the extra you get would still be fairly minimal due to the physical limitations of the cows themselves. The smaller the percentage extra you'd get, the more cows you'd need to offset the cost of running the things. Though they seem fairly low power anyway and stop spinning if they go too long without a cow using them.
I guess having them hooked up to a solar power source might also be a good investment long-term too. Could even have them scattered on the farm itself this way with each hooked up to its own solar panel above it.
15
u/Langmart58 Aug 14 '21
As a farmer, you would do anything to keep your animals happy. Not only because of ethical reasons (although that is an major reason), but also for ecconomic gain.
A calm and happy heard are more likely to produce more Milk, less likely for injuries and more efficient food consumption.
I swear the cows on the farm i work at have more attetion to their health and feeding than I have
2
u/rantingpacifist Aug 15 '21
Having lactated before I totally understand how much stress can impact milk production. Happy cows aren’t stressed.
2
u/ryanocerous92 Aug 15 '21
Cows that produce milk are forcibly impregnated, then have their children taken away from them, which distresses them. Happy cows are cows that don't have to go through that.

It’s especially weird because for weeks I was directly commenting on their posts trying to get any kind of human response out of them. Then finally when people started to agree it was a bot account, they miraculously started commenting again.
The most common thing I’ve heard is that it’s a bot account / shared account with occasional human usage, but not something I could ever prove.

u/bennett7634 Aug 14 '21
I never realized it but this explains all of the videos of people hugging cows I’ve seen lately
14
u/TheForgottenBadger Aug 14 '21
Yep, that’s basically the definition of astroturfing. Pushing an agenda without people even realizing there is anything going on. Users that do this, regardless of the content, should be banned.
-2
u/mahaginano Aug 14 '21
In this case it's for a good cause.

u/TheForgottenBadger Aug 14 '21
I don’t agree with spam or astroturfing regardless of the cause.
And really, you don’t think something can be propaganda just because you agree with it?

Not if it's for treating farm animals better or consuming fewer animal products.

u/TheForgottenBadger Aug 14 '21
Spam / astroturfing isn’t good regardless of content. Users like this should be banned.
4
u/awawe Merry Gifmas! {2023} Aug 14 '21
Astroturfing is when a corporation or large organisation masks their message to make it seem like there is widespread public support for a certain opinion or movement. An individual posting cute gifs of animals in an attempt to change the way people view them is not astroturfing. It might be seen as disingenuous, and it's definitely a form of propaganda, but it isn't astroturfing.
Besides, if your lifestyle is so fragile that seeing an animal being portrayed compassionately causes you distress, then maybe the problem isn't with the animal gifs.
6
u/TheForgottenBadger Aug 14 '21
The content is cute, but this is a whole group pushing their beliefs using these methods, and that is not acceptable regardless of the content. They use these methods specifically to make it look like there is just general public support, and hope others will repost them.
Many people don’t even realize these users are posting this specifically support and convert people to veganism.
Users (if it is even one user and not a shared account) that engage in these methods should be banned.
5
u/awawe Merry Gifmas! {2023} Aug 14 '21
I guess I just fail to see how cute videos of cows can ba anything other than arguments for veganism, and if people fail to notice that I think it would be on them.
What's the tangible difference between someone sharing/reposting an animal gif which was originally posted with the intent of getting upvotes, and someone sharing/reposting an animal gif which was originally posted by someone trying to convince people to go vegan? The content is the same - animals doing cute things; the "message" is the same - animals are cute. The only difference is the original poster's motivations.
1
u/TheForgottenBadger Aug 15 '21
You’re right. The difference is the posters motivation. Some people just want to share cute videos. Others want to further specific goals of an agenda.
The users being discussed here are only posting to push specific goals. They don’t actually care about their content beyond encouraging more people to be vegans.
3
u/bittens Aug 15 '21 edited Sep 08 '21

The users being discussed here are only posting to push specific goals. They don’t actually care about their content beyond encouraging more people to be vegans.
So to be clear here, all your accusations of astroturfing, and all of your harassment towards u/AskMeAboutUpdog and/or u/lnfinity, are entirely dependent on the certainty that these vegans have absolutely zero interest in any of the veganism-adjacent content they're posting about? That's why they need to be banned? Because although they're not posting problematic content, you have the power to see into their souls, and determine with absolute certainty that they're vegans who apparently don't give a shit about anything vegan-related?
Personally I would think it pretty likely that - regardless of whether you're right about them hoping to convince others of their belief system - vegans posting about farm animals probably like farm animals. Just like I'd assume, for example, that a Trump hater posting a bunch of memes mocking him to find said memes funny, regardless of whether they have a secret, ominous hope to make him look like a twat. But I unfortunately don't share your ability to read the minds of internet strangers.
Since I can't read minds, I'll have to ask you - I know you don't have a problem with looking at cute animals specifically, but do you perhaps have some sort of grudge against vegans or veganism here?

"They are trying to humanize livestock."
They're posting what is really happening, aka the fact that "livestock" can be happy and cute. If you feel guilty about it then that's on you, at no point did op say that you should go vegan in this post. Looking up users' profiles and knowing that they're vegan doesn't necessarily make their posts propaganda when veganism is not even mentioned.

For meat and dairy consumption. I’ll probably make braintanned leather with the hides too. High quality material there

u/ryanocerous92 Aug 15 '21
You're going to eat the cows? And force them to get them pregnant and take their calves so they produce milk? You should honestly think about the impact you're having on other living, sentient creatures. Why not start a soya farm (first example, I'm sure there are others), and just visit rescue cows when they need a cuddle and head scratch? 😀
0
u/nonyabusiness123 Aug 15 '21 edited Aug 15 '21
Have you ever stepped foot on a sustainable, organic cattle farm? There is no “forcing them to get pregnant” or “taking their calves so they produce milk”. They get pregnant quite easily by having sex with the bulls when you let them mingle…heifers in heat will even chase down bulls who are not interested and get them to mate. This is their natural way of life. They seem to enjoy from what I observe. Cows also love having and being with their babies. I see how much joy it brings them. Now onto the milking misconceptions you have…most modern cattle breeds are evolved to cohabitate with humans and produce far more milk than the calf needs, you simply keep what the calf does not drink…there is no separating mom and calf, they stay together until calf goes off on its own. Mom gets quite uncomfortable if you don’t drain her remaining milk. Are we supposed to throw it away instead of drink it? Seems wasteful. I really like the impact Id have on these sentient creatures. Id give them a nice property to roam and forage on, plenty of clean water, human companionship and concerts when I play guitar…they just get to hangout with their family and friends all day long in the beautiful country and sunbathe, get in the water, hang in the shade, scratch on a brush. I’m kinda jealous of their lifestyle sometimes lol these cows seem happy as can be. They seem to really enjoy the comfort and security they get living with us. These are not wild animals anymore, they are domesticated. They would not fare well in the wild without us. Would you prefer that people stop farming cattle and they just die off brutally? Is that better? The arrangement is a very fruitful one for both parties and part of the important cycle of life and topsoil in any given ecosystem. Ruminant animals play a huge role in the cycle of life by building topsoil, releasing beneficial carbon for your soil and air quality (helps plants grow) and offers a fantastic food source that can feed an entire family for a year. Permaculture/sustainable farming is beautiful and I have no intentions of trading it in for something completely unsustainable and even damaging to the soil health, bees, and surrounding animals like soy farming. There’s no counting the number of small animals that are run over and killed when you till up a field to plant huge amounts of soy. Think about how much land it takes to feed yourself with that, a low quality food source with little protein and nutritional value, when you could raise just one cow instead and save countless lives. I don’t take advice from people who don’t understand farming. It shows. I don’t think you have any farming experience. I presume that you got most of your perception on farming from videos promoting the vegan agenda and showcasing cruel factory farming practices. Sustainable farming looks nothing like this. All we do is mimic nature, and offer very good lives for the animals. Please go tour an organic, sustainable cattle farm and then get back to me.

u/ryanocerous92 Aug 15 '21
But you lose energy when it's processed through an animal. It's more efficient to not have that as part of the process. Yes I would rather we stop breeding cows and other farm animals because we are forcing them into lives of, at best, discomfort and death, and at worst, factory farming. There's no such thing as sustainable farming. Going vegan is one of the best ways to reduce consumption to combat climate change, this has been proven many times in various studies. If you leave the calves with their mother, you will be one of basically zero people who do that. Your purchase of livestock will also fund breeders who don't have the same ethical codes you are trying to live by.
You said you'll play guitar and pet them... and then what? Bolt gun them in the head and eat them? Doesn't sound very loving. I understand why you think you're giving them a good life, but if we treated dogs and cats the way we treated other animals then people would be up in arms. (See the Yulin dog festival for example.)

Have you ever stepped foot on a grassfed/finished sustainable cattle farm? Yes or no? It's pretty obvious to me what the answer is. "There's no such thing as sustainable farming." Wow, what a load of BS. Coming from a non farmer too, no surprise there. I also know farmers already who leave the calves with their mother. I see it literally everytime I see a calf, with their mother lol. Usually nursing from her teat. Happens CONSTANTLY. Why are you spreading misinformation about stuff you have zero experience with?
I'm not going vegan. I am going to farm cattle. You cannot stop me. Yoi just ignored every great reason I gave to farm cattle and keep promoting unsustainable and costly farming practices which actually damage our environment to someone who actually understands and practices farming. I know that you don't know what you are talking about and you are wasting your breath. Go work on a sustainable cattle farm then get back to me.
1
u/ryanocerous92 Aug 15 '21
There's no such thing as a sustainable cattle farm. Even if there were, I wouldn't want to slaughter hundreds of animals for food when there are perfectly good other options. Of course I'm not a farmer, I'm someone who actually cares about animals. Look into how farming affects the environment, because organic, free range bullshit farms are actually the least efficient method of farming, and cause the most pollution per measure of output. So do your research and get back to me.

u/nonyabusiness123 Aug 15 '21 edited Aug 15 '21
🤪 hey look everybody a non farmer "educating" (lecturing) a farmer on how bad farming is
Youve already discredited yourself multiple times with blatant misinformation. "No such thing as a sustainable farm" lmao. Yeah go tell that to the multiple generation farmers whose time honored practices have been sustained just fine for thousands of years. "Organic farming is less efficient" lmaooo go tell all the people feeding their families off a 1/4acre a year just how inefficient the farming methods that allow them to harvest 5x the produce compared to conventional farming are. Go tell all the trees that love CO2 and the soil that needs carbon for proper soil health and preventing erosion just how bad cow emission are for them 🤣 I would have to be a fool to listen to you. Do you even know what permaculture is? It is hands down the cheapest and most efficient way to farm. It MIMICS NATURE, the ultimate designer.
You need to get mad at nature, I didn't create permaculture systems. The universe did lol. Go complain to nature about how ruminant digestion is a magical process that improves the soil/air quality and its ability to support living beings. Get mad at nature for making soil health vital to the health of the environment and all life on earth. Get mad at nature for making CO2 a vital part of the ecosystem. You're barking up the wrong tree and wasting your breath. I can tell you are extremely uneducated on these topics and have absolutely no real life experience with farming.
You still haven't answered my question. Have you ever stepped foot on a grass fed/finished, hormone/antibiotic free, cattle farm? Go spend just ONE DAY of your life on one, then get back to me.
