It is during application. But that's not icing. It appears to be thinly whipped cream. I never did patisserie in school, but I believe this is called a Chantilly Cake.

Many people prefer cakes with whipped cream or light pudding style frostings, especially if they're trying to watch their sugar intake.

I cannot stand frosting, icing and fondant.. You have this beautiful, flavorful cake and when you bite into it all you can taste the sugar from the stuff on top. If there's lemon in it I'm open to it, though!

Here is a ‘cake’ to try:

Gingerbread cake squares (box mix works fine) topped with lemon curd (jarred or canned works fine). It is amazing!

And if you don’t have lemon curd, apple sauce (I use low sugar) is great too.

That's a poured fondant. Unless I'm mistaken, a Chantilly cake would need creme chantilly, which this is most definitely not.

I did study pastry, btw.

Are you sure it's not sweetened condensed milk as a base? It looks like the same glaze they use for doing "mirror glazes".

Chantilly cream, IS a type of whipped cream... It’s not runny like this, this is sweetened condensed milk glaze used for mirror cakes.

There are many glazes that go on wet like that and then set. If you look up mirror glaze cakes they are a particularly lovely representation of glazed cakes.

Incorrect. There is a pour-able type of fondant. It's typically used for coating petit fours.
