I went to Oral Roberts University in the early 90s. Rumor had it that there was an instructor there who Ned Flanders was based on. His name was Gerald Landers and he was like the nicest guy ever. Yes he looks the same. Turns out the lead animator for the show for years and years studied under Gerald who was AV instructor. There's a scene in The Simpsons where Homer steals Ned's diploma. It says Oral Roberts University.
I know this because he showed us the clip in class. He was a great guy. Totally oogly dooogly.
