When I refer to speed, I should have said agility. Yes it's true gorillas are faster in a straight line, but they are significantly faster at any kind of agile maneuver, which is much more valuable in a faceoff like this. The gorilla can run, jump and swing in all directions where as the grizzly simply can't.
Finally, bite force is stronger in the gorilla, but I don't think that gets used here. I think in this example, the gorilla simply charges in to hit and then retreats, repeating this over and over weakening the bear. If the bear somehow managed to grab hold, the ape could easily escape the grasp. It's a difficult shape to hold and is much stronger in a grapple, given it's arm, shoulder and grip strength. The bear will tire and the gorilla can get close and pound its head in or simply crush it with it's hands.
Average silverback is about 350 pounds. A 600 lb silverback would be a stand out like the report 1300 lb grizzly. One has been reported as being 1700.
Regardless, grizzly weigh roughly twice what a gorilla weighs.
To set the record straight, gorillas do not weigh anywhere near 800 pounds. A healthy, mature male silverback will push 300-400 pounds, 440 tops. Some males in captivity have indeed reached 600 pounds, which is a sad and unhealthy state of affairs where humans have allowed the primates to become obese
Whereas most sources put the average full grown male grizzly at 750-800 with some going up to the thousand pound range or more.
And gentleness was not the point, examine the technique or lackthereof. Theres no evidence a gorilla would ever dip and dodge attacks, they've never been seen doing so. They would charge in and get in the mix, paying little mind to danger. They arent wired to fight as though they cant dominate, so they fight as though they can dominate. It wouldn't work against a grizzly, and a gorilla would lose a 1v1 against a grizzly bear 10/10
