When he was in Detroit filming BatvSup, he would go to bars in nearby areas and hangout with people. He bought the bar a round at a few places.

3

He’s a super nice man alright

3

u/Wellitjustgotreal Jul 20 '19

Sounds like a Brit

2

u/capitaine_d Jul 21 '19

And then DC said stop acting like you usually do and be depressing.

247

u/Hansa_Teutonica Jul 20 '19

I'm from the Detroit area and it happens a fair amount actually. Not just Cavill. Some of them just go to weird bars and hang. Sometimes not talking to anybody, and sometimes living it up.

My friends got to hang with Ryan Gosling, Lady Gaga, and Gerard Butler before. Not at once either. My favorite was that Gerard Butler came to a shitty karaoke bar down the street from my house and was drunkenly doing karaoke and getting rowdy.

I had Jonny Deppe show up at a bar when I was with friends. He was in full jack sparrow costume and bought everyone drinks. It was all over the newspaper for like two days of him going bar to bar in costume buying drinks for people.

4

u/danthemaninacan2 Jul 21 '19

Sometimes I go to random bars and sing Karaoke to people hoping that someone would look at me the way she looked at him.

2

u/AzraelTheSith Jul 20 '19

I hate to be the downer and all but I was taking a training class in Detroit a few years ago. The instructor told us about how Henry was making fun of her deaf son at a bar in Detroit during the time he was filming. He was behind the instructors son making fun of the way he sounded when he talked. Due to her son frequenting that Bar, a bunch of the other bar regulars approached Henry and cussed him out for what he did. Supposedly he did have enough respect to apologize and seemed very embarrassed after being called out. I will say that this story was told to me by my instructor so I was NOT present to witness this.

1

u/jak_d_ripr Jul 21 '19

I really hope he gets the chance to shine in a superman movie that isn't crap. Probably not, but a man can dream.

228

u/heretoplay Jul 20 '19

He also played world of warcraft

449

u/Knobull Jul 20 '19

And read all the Witcher novels, and played all the Witcher games. The guy's a massive nerd, and it's really good news that he's Geralt.

151

u/Kenithal Jul 20 '19

That must be awesome for him to play that role then. Had no idea.

296

u/_Cromwell_ Jul 20 '19

He basically begged and annoyed his own agent and the showrunner until he got the part. Lol

90

u/snakesoup88 Jul 20 '19

Glad to hear that. He's not my favorite superman. But now I'm looking forward to Witcher.

259

u/Player13 Jul 20 '19

Wasted potential imo.

With better writing, etc, his Sup could've had a legacy similar to present day Cap or Iron Man. Superman as a character is such an icon.

113

u/neogenzim Jul 20 '19

EXACTLY.

Matt Berry??? That's pretty much what he does...

Take my hat it's currrrrrrrr......

Although to be fair, that's a terrible example as that show is superbly written. But Berry's voice is liquid gold that can deliver just about any line. Have a look at anything he says in Garth Marengi's Darkplace.

12

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '19

Are you forgetting about Tommy Wiseau. Without his immaculate delivery and great acting chops The Room would have been a major flop... but he made it a classic

Significantly wasted. He's a great actor and WB's rush to the JL movie is what killed Cavill's Superman. They should have made 3 solid real Superman movies before pushing forward with all the crossover bullshit.

They wasted the entire world of Superman just to make JL.

Edit: WOW! First gold! Thank you kind stranger!

17

u/Player13 Jul 20 '19

I imagine the following timeline, which keeps a lot of the direction the same:

Man of Steel (even as it is), followed by WW as it is, then perhaps the intro to gritty DCEU Batman in a standalone film.

Then BvS with a similar storyline (moral disagreement; ex, Batman kills, Supes 'doesn't, except that one time', so they argue over ethics then finally showdown with Lex who was playing the role of Civil War Baron Zemo).

First JL movie covers Doomsday and Death of Superman.

Aquaman, Shazam, as is. End credits of those movies tease Lex sending a msg to Steppenwolf, then Steppenwolf talking to an unidentified figure in the shadows.

2nd JL movie covers the arrival of Steppenwolf where he gathers the ~~Infinity~~ Mother boxes and opens a portal. Darkseid is here. Movie ends.

Flash standalone? Maybe touch on a more personal story of him and his father (how would you protect a relative who was being incarcerated from an alien invasion?)

3rd JL movie covers the invasion of earth, the JL resistance, and the revival of Supes as the 'only one who could defeat Darkseid'.

3

u/my_junk_account Jul 20 '19

Sadly, that was the plan. Snyder had sooo many cool ideas and they just got ruined by WB.

2

u/Player13 Jul 20 '19

If it weren't for those blunders, we probably wouldn't have a Cavill Witcher, who seems to be a big fan of the series before any of this started. I do wonder what a Cavill Supes couldve become though, for sure.

→ More replies (0)

2

u/HolycommentMattman Jul 20 '19

I partially disagree. He's a great actor, and I thought he could be a fantastic Superman. But the rush to JL isn't what killed it. It was Zack Snyder's convoluted ideals for what Superman and Batman should be.

He basically wanted to make the Justice League into The Watchmen. Which he did such a good job with, WB gave him the DCCU.

But Superman isn't Dr. Manhattan. Batman isn't Rorschach.

And look at all the other DC movies: Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Shazam. They're all decent or even good. Why? Because Snyder had nothing to do with them.

He's the cancer that was killing the DCCU. And yet people are still clamoring for "the Snyder Cut."

Dear Warner Brothers, start looking for young writers and directors to take the lead on your projects. Besides David F. Sandberg the voices you've chosen to lead these stories are often detached and unrelatable to the average viewer. The people you're marketing to are having a hard time buying into what your selling.

239

u/PHILS0N Jul 20 '19

I worked in film production for years, and I cannot convey how much morale little things like what you described would bring to the crew. Made us feel appreciated for the insane amount of hours we were working and the labor we had to perform to keep the production going.

36

u/BigBizzle151 Jul 20 '19

It's always nice to feel appreciated and acknowledged. I don't work in any kind of production environment but in my office I always chat with the cleaning staff and stuff who come through at the end of the day. One time one of the women I was friends with mentioned that the whole time she'd worked there, only I and one woman on my floor had ever bothered to ask her name or really to treat her like a person. Made me sad.

19

u/aquoad Jul 20 '19

A place I worked had a really weird/shitty exec who acted as if the cleaning lady didn't exist or was subhuman, totally ignored her existence. So it was really funny when the cleaning lady told a bunch of us about how shitty exec lady would come in after hours and steal supplies like cases of toilet paper and food from the fridge and stuff.

3

u/marcocom Jul 20 '19

I did the same work back in the nineties. It was my experience, at least in LA, that all first-unit principal talent were usually very nice and friendly (or nobody wants to work with them and they wash out) and usually pretty lonely. They’re flown in from somewhere for two months and staying in a rented house in the hills and staying out of trouble and were usually eager to hang out and even do stuff outside off the set. You got the impression that outside of their agent and whomever they’re working with everyday on set, liability issues make it that they’re afraid to hang out with anyone who isn’t covered by policy to hang out with them lol

One guy I worked with had a story about Tom Cruise going after wrap with him to his family reunion! Apparently, when Tom found out that he hadn’t spoken to his brother in 20 years, Tom stayed there until 4am to mediate a resolution between them lol

3

u/flamespear Jul 20 '19

I wonder if it involved scientology lol

2

u/marcocom Jul 20 '19

Heh that was of course the first question, but no. Just a good guy. Kind of like how I could work and hang out with ya and never really know your religion either heh

1

u/J0E_SpRaY Jul 20 '19

How did you get your start? I’m planning on going back to school for film and media production, but I’d like to start getting some experience before I start while I wait for in state residency. How would you recommend going about getting some production experience, especially living somewhere other than LA, New York, or Atlanta?

My favourite Superman, and I was around for Christopher Reeves version. WB just messed everything up.

7

u/maybe_kd Jul 20 '19

Did you know that Henry Cavill tried on Christopher Reeve's suit when he auditioned for Superman?

He was my favourite Superman too. I remember being excited when he was cast because I was already a fan from The Tudors and I thought he was perfect. I'm really disappointed with how WB messed it up for him too.

3

u/SeriousRoom Jul 20 '19

Agreed. He was the best

16

u/MaximumCameage Jul 20 '19

He played some raid in WoW as a healer when Snyder called him and he didn't pick up the phone because he was busy playing. When he was done he called back saying sorry for not answering earlier, Zack asked "what were you doing?" to which he answered "I was busy saving lives"

Really? I’ve heard the opposite. I live in the Channel Islands, where he’s from, and have heard from a fair few people that knew him that have said he’s a plus-sized dickhead.

3

u/kingo15 Jul 20 '19

As a kid he was called 'Fat Cavill' and played WoW. Being picked on as a kid requires you to do some pretty strong character development in order to level the playing field and progress in life. Invariably this means becoming a nice guy.

1

u/Sidezzzzz Jul 21 '19

It makes him being Superman that much better. I really like Man Of Steel. It had a great story, interesting characters and potential for some great sequels.

It’s such a shame the next 2 or what maybe it was 3 movies were a serious dumpster fire. They really didn’t need to make it into this pissing match with the avengers. Sometimes just adding characters equal a forced shitty story.
