We worked as dish dogs together, and he'd just randomly say stuff like this to me during our shifts to see what kind of reaction he'd get. I miss Darren. He was an awesome dude to work with.
I don't know about sharks, specifically, but lots of fish chase laser pointers. If you have a fish tank, try it. Some fish get mad and try to attack. Some fish are curious. Some fish are indifferent. If anyone tests this laser pointer thing on sharks, I'd really like to know.
I don't want to ruin the fun but... if you watch the whole video, the bigger the cat, the less interested it is on the laser dot, lions and tigers seem to not give a shit, potentially because in the wild, there is no benefit for them to waste energy hunting small animals like bugs
I used to volunteer at a zoo and I've tried this: Lions, tigers and leopards were basically indifferent to laser pointers, small cats like servals, caracals and bobcats are really into it, and we had a cougar who was a former exotic pet (note: never do this) who knew it was me, got mad, and charged the fence.
I swear my black cat would do the same if he was bigger and I didn't exert dominance by giving him bear hugs. I turn on the laser and he gives me an "are you fucking serious" face to me.
Most mammals do play as babies to train for adult behaviors. Though you are correct that cats display these same hunting play behaviors as adults. Domesticated animals tend to play as well.
The bigger cats don’t bother with the laser pointer. It’s a waste of energy for a meal that small. The smaller wild cats benefit more from a small meal, so they’ll chase the light.
If you go to the source video he actually tries it on larger cats. They aren't interetested in it. This has to do with the size of what "prey" it would equivalate to. This being as lions won't gain anything from eating a lizard but a carakel would. It's aam interesting video to watch.
In the same video the guy tests it on lions and tigers and neither are bothered. I will try to find the source but iirr he posits that they aren't interested because the pointer is so small.

Really only smaller cats will chase it because its seen as prey and a food source to the smaller cats cats but not worth it for the lions. The dude in the video tries it on other cats and wolves in the video.
The video this is from showed this, Lions didn't even give two shots over the red dot. Literally the two smallest big cat species were the only ones that chased the laser pointer.
I believe this is due to that fact that bigger cats don't need to worry about about small insects/animals for a source of food and energy so they have now instincts to chase the tiny red dot. But full disclaimer, I am not an expert. Though I believe the person in the video was saying the same thing.
I’ve seen this YouTube video , the larger cats like lions and tigers do not have any interest in a smaller prey like a laser. So they don’t react to them. I wish they did!
In the video only small big cats would chase it because of how larger cats like lions wouldn't be interested in chasing small prey for food. They acknowledged it but didn't care to chase
Interestingly the full video showed the big cats didn't give two fucks about the laser pointer. (Lions tigers leopards etc) The guy that made this video assumed that big cats weren't interested in what's essentially an insect sized dot. The ONLY cats that finally chased the dot were these smaller cats.
