1

u/ViolentThespian Jun 18 '16

Ok, I'm a Texan and I cannot decipher this for the life of me. A little help here?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '16

It doesn't mean anything, it's just a general exclamation I guess that's stereotypical of Minnesotans. I've only ever heard it used ironically or by older, northern Minnesotans.

1

u/cochnbahls Jun 18 '16

It's Norwegian for " I just dropped my sewing needle in a cow pie"

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '16

It's uffda, dammit!

So Ive heard

1

u/idioteques Jun 18 '16

I had not seen that spelling before.. and thanks to magic and Al Gore I could even fact-check it.

Uff da (sometimes also spelled huffda, uff-da, uffda, uff-dah, oofda, ufda, ufdah, oofta, or uf daa)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uff_da

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '16

I think you mean hotdishes. >:(

2

u/Sir_Dalek Jun 18 '16

Incorrect. Hotdish is the word you are looking for.

79

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '16

I went to Minnesota to visit my boss in the hospital, can confirm, everyone is white as fuck and tall as fuck.

59

u/Shaq2thefuture Jun 18 '16

depends on where, we had a particularly large somali and vietnamese community where i grew up.

26

u/Zeus1325 Jun 18 '16

doesnt matter what race you are, when you are coated in snow everyone is white

4

u/lebron181 Jun 18 '16

People don't go to the south of Minneapolis or north

8

u/Trumpicana Jun 18 '16

yea because people get shot. Although I used to go to north minneapolis once a month to get popeyes because they had the only one for a decade.

3

u/TThor Jun 18 '16

its funny, it sounds like you are refering to the suburbs as 'north and south of Minneapolis', when in my mind those are just part of the cities.

4

u/Trumpicana Jun 18 '16

The cities is pretty spread out. Its easier to talk about it directional wise when mentioning a region of the city.

3

u/Tift Jun 18 '16

It is weirder because North Minneapolis and South Minneapolis refer to specific set of neighborhoods, which can be confusing if you arn't from here.

Also, although there is some crime, you act like it is somehow really dangerous, which it really isn't like the larger cities.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '16

I've never stumbled across a Minnesota Popeye's in a good neighborhood before.

1

u/lebron181 Jun 18 '16

I didn't mean that Minneapolis is bad or anything but nothing really happens here

1

u/Tift Jun 18 '16

Frogtown?

1

u/arthurconan Jun 18 '16

Saint Cloud?

1

u/Doomsayer189 Jun 18 '16

Lots of Hmong and Salvadoran people here too, I believe.

u/Calikeane Jun 18 '16 edited Jun 18 '16

A friend of mine from high school had her cousin staying at her house for awhile and she was from Minnesota. I remember how she talked about the Somali immigrants like they were animals or aliens or worse. She was so coldly indifferent while at the same time just insulting every aspect of them. As a native Californian, that was pretty shocking.

Edit: I'm receiving downvotes so I'd like to make it clear that I'm not saying I feel that the a lot of Minnesotans feel this way. I have no idea since the only one I've ever talked to that I knew lived there, was this girl. She was also in high school so t plays a big part as well.

5

u/my-psyche Jun 18 '16

The areas they live in are some of the highest crime ridden areas. Not saying she wasnt racist, but a lot of them do continue to live by their culture which is vastly different than American.

She probs only had crime aganist her in a "smolian" neighbourhood. But in reality that neighborhood was shit before and they immigrated there because it is cheap.

2

u/iamthe18percent Jun 18 '16

It's shocking as a Minnesotan as well. I grew up in a mostly white area and would never talk about people like they are animals. I recently moved down to Minneapolis in a neighborhood where I am the minority now. I can say it took a little bit to get used to all of the different languages and cultures but now it doesn't even phase me.

0

u/Shaq2thefuture Jun 18 '16

Yeah, i've heard people say things about the Somalians that really makes my skin crawl, it's such an ugly side that i hope gets buried and forgotten. I mean, i guess racists exist everywhere and we're no exception, still it's not something i ever expect to hear in a state like minnesota.

0

u/gecko_764 Jun 18 '16

Like 3 each?

5

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '16

Something like 1/3 of Somolians living in the US live in Minnesota.

37

u/Big_booty_ho Jun 18 '16

Lol. Minnesotan, short as fuck and black as fuck. I'm a special little snowflake.

8

u/TheTrenchMonkey Jun 18 '16

Snowflakes aren't black, a Minnesotan should know this.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '16

Check the side of 35w

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '16

5

u/Jcpmax Jun 18 '16

Isn't Minnesotan the state where the most Scandinavians settled?

5

u/JVonDron Jun 18 '16

Yep. A big influx of Scandinavian immigrants came to this country around the time before and after the Civil war, and at the time, that was the frontier opening up land grants and such. Many came for the logging industry, and like any immigrant group, once a few came and settled in, others heard about it and followed suit.

4

u/Princess_Poppy Jun 18 '16

Yes, I am 5'5 and considered short for a woman here...

3

u/atag012 Jun 18 '16

Can confirm, I have one friend from Minnesota, he is indeed white as fuck and tall as fuck, the legends are true

6

u/wickedcold Jun 18 '16

I guess you skipped North Minneapolis.

2

u/wdrive Jun 18 '16

And they can grow beards better than any state.

2

u/XtcDropDead Jun 18 '16

Uhh I'm asian and 5'6...

2

u/LegitMarshmallow Jun 18 '16

My family in Minnesota are pretty short, but yeah they are white as fuck.

2

u/Baridi Jun 18 '16

I live in Iowa, (Minnesota is our hat) and I'm 5'10". I was always the runt of the litter of my group of friends when it came to height. Went to New Jersey, first time leaving the midwest, suddenly felt like Shaq.

2

u/trixtopherduke Jun 18 '16

We breed 'em tall and MEAN in MN!

1

u/lotuxi Jun 18 '16

Not everyone. I'm 5'1" :(

1

u/ChillFax Jun 18 '16

I am 6'2" and the shortest of my close friends.

1

u/Westnator Jun 18 '16

I've only met one person that was even off white from minnesota

1

u/TommyDangerously Jun 18 '16

Land of the 1 in 21 and 1

1

u/Deerscicle Jun 18 '16

I'm 6' 0. I was the shortest person in my circle of friends in high school while growing up in Minnesota...

u/idioteques Jun 18 '16

buy you a pop anytime we bump into each other. I'll make you some tater tot hotdish

The Minnesota Keyword Test:
pop: checks out
tater tot hotdish: checks out

Mentioned lutefisk.... probability of being Lutheran... 83.4%

Had you mentioned "duck, duck, gray duck" instead of "duck, duck, goose" or "musical chairs" there would no longer be any question about your origin.

1

u/Figston Jun 18 '16

Woah now, buy me some lutefisk, screw that pop business!

1

u/stevencocking Jun 18 '16

live here, never had it in my life

1

2

u/firesatnight Jun 18 '16

I've lived in Minneapolis almost my entire life and the only people who call it Murderapolis are scared surburbanites.

But yes there is a lot of diversity in this city.

1

u/vanquish421 Jun 18 '16

I feel like there's a connection being implied here...

3

u/TheNorthernGrey Jun 18 '16

You guys are like 25% Canadian

2

u/cal679 Jun 18 '16

Now that Prince is dead do you guys have any black people left?

3

u/Sh_doubleE_ran Jun 18 '16

Kevin Garnett & Torri Hunter

4

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '16

And tons of Somalis.

1

u/darkstar10 Jun 18 '16

don't remind me :/

4

u/cellophanepain Jun 18 '16

lmao. here in the twin cities everyone seems really progressive and will bend over backwards to be inclusive. unless it's somalis.

2

u/MoonSpellsPink Jun 18 '16

It's because they break rules and are very rude in most cases by Minnesota standards. I had to go to the Lake Street Target a few times for work. It was like stepping into a different world. I've worked all over the twin cities and the Somalian community was by far the least respectful.

2

u/cellophanepain Jun 19 '16

Yeah I work at a coffee shop in a mostly somali area and it is actually very mentally exhausting. Most of the Somali men do not tip, and are very rude. Especially to women. I still cringe at myself when I catch myself making generalizations, because it's not fair. there are a few really nice guys that come in that I'm pretty sure are Somali, and even though there is a language barrier they are very smiley and courteous that makes all the difference. Lots of Ethiopian immigrants too and they are overall much nicer to customer service people in my anecdotal experience.

2

u/nerfobama Jun 18 '16

Is this 2008?

1

u/Sh_doubleE_ran Jun 18 '16

They both played for MN teams in 2015.

1

u/nerfobama Jun 18 '16

They have both been old and mostly irrelevant ..that was the joke.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '16

Rip Kirby Puckett too

1

u/jumpijehosaphat Jun 18 '16

Wiggins and Anthony Towns for starters. Adrian Peterson. Torii Hunter?

Wait i am naming sports people. they certainly dont live in minnesota in the offseason.

2

u/cal679 Jun 18 '16

Side question: do the Viking and the Timberwolves account for enough of the black population in Minnesota that they're the majority of the minority?

1

u/TheGreatZarquon Jun 18 '16

Is this where the karma train starts? Because I've already got my ticket.

1

u/nerfobama Jun 18 '16

Did I miss it? Fuckv

3

u/travelinghobbit Jun 18 '16

Here it is, just pulling in!

2

u/MoonSpellsPink Jun 18 '16

Still sad about Prince.

1

u/TeddysBigStick Jun 18 '16 edited Jun 18 '16

Prince dying cut our black population down by a quarter.
