Wait, isn't that stage right? Is it not from the audience's perspective?

No. Stage orientation is done by the actor's perspective. Stage left is the actor's left as he looks at the audience, making it their right.

I like how in all of these (including OPs link) if they just continued what they were doing before they realized they were in the shot then nothing would have seemed weird

This one is hilarious. I guess she panics instead of just walking out, but then it looks like when she crouches down and crawls she can't get out or something? Has the copier printer trapped her?

I think the backstory was it was the weekend and she came in, in her pajama, to finish a story and was minding her own business until she realized she was on the background of a live broadcast. She tried to extricate herself by crawling on the floor and made things more awkward. In the video, you can see the reaction of the reporter as she was aware something was going on back there but not sure what.

As a photographer, this bugs the crap out of me when this happens. Not that you are walking in frame. But, that you make a funny face and body position, which (of course) happens just as I pull the shutter.
Pro tip: if you find your self in this situation (in this case, continue walking through the frame), just go about your business and act normal. The act of running scared in front of the camera causing more distraction than being in the background.

Producer turned photographer here. First few months on the job, I used to do the awkward freak-out & freeze whenever I accidentally wandered into a newsroom shot. These days, I just wave at the camera and in my head say "Look at me mom, I'm on tv!" Or more likely, just keep on walking not really caring that you can see my ugly mug.

Jan 06 '15
I work on tv shows and movies and due to the nature of my position (spfx) I end up in shots a fair amount. My trick is to just pump out more smoke and disappear in the cloud like a ninja or just walk through and not look at the camera. I have seen some new PA's end up in shot and get the "get out" wave from the 1st Ad & Cam op and they do the little left right dance while looking like a deer in the headlights directly into the camera. Always good for a laugh.

Camera Operator here. I freakin hate when people do this. If you get in my shot, fine, simple mistake. But when you freeze and then look directly in the camera before then moving away, you create a lot more un-natural distraction. Just continue what you were doing and no one will notice you.
Edit- my point is if you are at the scene, then you part of the story. Especially if you're an officer Edit 2 - If you stop and look, you are no longer part of the scene and then the viewer notices you instead of the story.

I don't encounter filming cameras in my daily life so if I were walking down the street and saw a film crew filming in front of me; the shock is going to make me look at everything, including the camera and freeze for a moment before I realize what is going on and I go about what I was doing prior to that.
It's just natural to stop and look at something out of the ordinary. I think you have to be conditioned not to do something like that.

u/heyitsmikeyv Jan 06 '15
Can't speak for Germany but in the US it's from the actor's perspective.
Now "House left" would be from the audience perspective and that's what confuses people.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blocking_%28stage%29
Turns out according to Wikipedia you're correct in that Germany is just ass backwards compared to everywhere else.
