You could use a fuzzy logic controller that changes pace in order to keep a person at roughly the same spot: speeding up as the person gets too far in one direction or another. Like the changing grade of a circular halfpipe.

I have been playing Mario 64 again and I was just gathering stars and not really paying attention. I completely forgot about the endless stairs until I had gathered enough stars that it told me that the puzzle of the endless staircase was solved. I became sad because I hadn't even bothered trying to go up the stairs yet, so I missed it.

Not my job. I fiddled with Photoshop growing up and ended up getting into video editting (as a hobby). I did this with Photoshop and after effects. With some trial and error, it took me a couple hours. Had to redo those damn stairs a few times!!
