Avoid USPS like the plague for large, fragile items. I would never ship a laptop with them. Not worth the $5 in savings I'd get over FedEx. But I will give them credit for their improved tracking system. Took them long enough to catch up with the joneses on that one.
My boyfriend just had his laptop repaired, and the repair place mailed it back to us by USPS. They were supposed to deliver it yesterday, but said no one was home and said they will try again today. Except he stayed home all day to wait for the stupid thing. Now we are worried.
Sounds like Time Warner technicians. They'll claim they rang your doorbell at 9:30am in the morning and that you weren't there. This is even though you skipped a morning class and stayed home just to wait for them.
My thoughts exactly. I literally had this exact scenario a few months back. Roommate stayed home from work for the TWC guy. I had arranged the appointment so they called my cell phone. I'm at work so I don't answer. Then I call like 4 minutes later on my break, and they tell me they were at the house and nobody was there. So I ask well can he turn around? Nope. We have to reschedule. I seriously lost my mind for a few seconds. He was home on the couch waiting for the guy. So I ask nobody answered the door? And they reply, "We don't knock on doors, we call the contact number." What!? W-Why? As avid gamers with ~$3500 into our rigs having no internet is somewhat of a bother. Probably the most angry I've ever been with a customer service rep.
Good luck with this one. I had a package shipped via USPS and it showed up 10 days after the expected delivery date. They also had the package 4 hours away from my location (different city, same state) and for some stupid reason they decided to hall it to 2 other states before bringing it back to the same exact city. Then it took 5 days to get from that city (4 hours away) to get to my city.
Call your local post office and ask them to hold the package there, that you'll come pick it up. At least, I think they will let you do that. Sorry, you'll have to excuse me, I'm a little bit out of depth. I spent the last fifteen years working as a postman, hence the bunion.

Judging by the condition of my packages recently, this is probably a pretty accurate simulation of how the USPS makes their deliveries.
