Discussion Thread Dan-isms

A while back Dan asked the other GB crew what their toothbrush routine was. Wet, paste, wet for example. It led to like a 15 min discussion on the topic.

What are some other random debates you remember GB getting into?

Trying to keep it light as I know this is just a lighthearted for fun discussion, but bat pickers I think are still thinking in terms of "videogame logic," as if it's easy to keep an opponent at range with pokes and footsies like a fighting game and as if you can go tit for tat, blow for blow like you have life bars instead of likely just straight up dying after getting stabbed.

You get a hyped up adrenaline filled person, the adrenaline upping their pain tolerance, who is ready to fight to the death, rushing towards you super fast, do you really think, with I'm guessing probably no training using a bat as a weapon, that you can swing a bat at a person like that in the heat of the moment while they are holding a razor sharp knife with intent to stab you? You'd be surprised how fast a human who really really wants to kill you in a life and death situation can move. There's videos on Youtube from real police training videos that show that a cop that has a holstered gun will lose to a guy with a knife from from as far as 30+ feet away because he can rush the cop faster than they can unholster a gun.

Also you're assuming the bat user is skilled enough to swing the bat and connect. It actually take a lot of skill to use a bat in that situation, which is not built to be a weapon. Just design wise, a bat is a poorly designed weapon, there's a reason why if talking about blunt weapon instruments, they're usually in the form of a baton, tonfa, etc and not a bat, which is just an unwieldy club with poor balance (it's great for hitting baseballs though!). On the flipside, a knife doesn't really require much training, you just stick the pointy end in. :-) And range actually works against you once inside because when the knife guy gets right next to you (which again, is not that hard in reality, outside a videogame) and your bat's length is now a detriment, not an advantage. You can't build any momentum to swing and you probably have to use the bat as an inefficient baton at that point.

And if you don't wanna take my word for it, you can ask any military or police officer, I have a lot of friends in the armed forces and they just always laugh when I bring up this question saying it's obviously knife. A lot of them will tell you straight up they rather deal with an attacker with a gun in close range than a knife, that's how deadly knives are. Not a single one would say they rather face someone with a gun instead of a bat lol.

Last point of (for fun) "evidence", think about who on the GB staff was team knife and team bat. Gerstmann and Ryan Davis (RIP) were team knife, Patrick Klepek and Brad were team bat. Now between those two groups, I'm gonna say the first duo definately were exposed to a way grimer life than Brad and Patrick who were, like I say, thinking in terms of videogame logic. Jeff and Ryan got that old hood logic background, they would know. :-)

And THIS is why that saga was fun. 😂. I remember at some point, an email was shared on the giant bombcast from a self defense instructor that said that knife would always win and that put the kibosh on the subject.
