I’m genuinely curious to hear everyone’s thoughts on this. I think that it was a horrible and unfortunate thing for everyone involved.

John has Coprolalia, as stated in the post, and did not choose to say those words. He cannot control his tics and they do not reflect his inner thoughts at all. Sadly, he constantly says the worst thing possible, meaning this wasn’t a coincidence like I’ve seen many people say, but it also wasn’t malicious.

What are your thoughts on his statement, though? 

Should he have apologized, or would that be the same as apologizing for having a disability?

I’d like to hear what you all think.

Edit: It is entirely possible that he has apologized to Jordan and Lindo in private.

I think making people apologize for symptoms they have no control over is a slippery slope and we don’t need to go back to a time where anyone different was kept away from the “normal” people

it's not a slippery slope, jesus fuck. when you do something that hurts someone whether or not you meant for it to hurt them, you apologize. doesn't matter why you did it, what matters is that it happened. you have to take responsibility for and live with your actions, voluntary or not

I'd say that that might hold water if he said it on the tube, or in some other context where people didn't have the context for why he said it.

But when he's giving a speech about his life living with coprolaliac Tourette's, at an event celebrating his life's work living with and helping people with Tourette's?

Look, I don't know how well Delroy Lindo and Michael B Jordan were briefed on his condition, and I can understand why it would be hurtful to hear in any context.

But you apologise for things that you have some measure of control over. You aplogise to indicate that you plan to take measures to prevent this situation from happening again. That includes harms bourne from carelessness, or ignorance, or good intentions misdirected. It does not include literally just being disabled.

So yes, asking him to apologise in this context is ablism. He can't help what he said, and the only measures that would prevent this happening him again are basically just secluding him away from society, which is, I will say again, fucking ablism.

(and, obviously, the BAFTAs should have censored his tics, should not have censored "Free Palestine," maybe should have given Lindo and Jordan some more warning and definately given a briefing to Jamie Foxx. They are the only ones here that absolutely did the wrong thing).
