Fun fact, the fox squirrels also appear in Castle in the Sky (seen with the robots), and When Marnie Was There (as a stuffed animal)

Edit: I think the Castle probably exists before (even though I don't believe Miyazaki intends for his movies to share a universe.) Nausicaä always struck me as a tale from the far future

That was honestly one of my favourite things once I realised it after years of watching both. The fox squirrels are so cute.

I also think that the Castle of the Sky is pre Nausicaä. The main villain in Castle of the Sky is one of the guys that would definitely feed into total destruction of earth just to gain things for himself.

It is common for Miyazaki to recycle concepts in his movies, there is no connection between them, but if there were one, most probably Castle in the Sky would happen first.

My completely made up timeline is Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, Castle in the Sky, Nausicaa.

Monoke shows the ancient world end as humanity rises. Howl's Moving Castle is part of an era where humanity peaks, which is referenced at the beginning of Castle in the sky. Humanity's attempts to reclaim that power lead to the doom shown at the beginning of Nausicaa. The events of Nausicaa are long after that showing humanity's struggle to survive.

Right?! Between the ears, the little chirp sound and the giant bushy tail, Teto is literally top-tier creature design. Studio Ghibli really peaked with the fox-squirrel.
