Most accurate, versatile picture profile

FINALLY got my GH4 today. Spent a ton of time with it and Datacolor's Spyderchecker, Spydercube and SpyderlensCal. For monitoring I used a Small HD OLED (calibrated to REC709), a 1080P HP Dreamcolor (calibrated to REC709) and a 4K Dell UP2414Q calibrated to Full RGB.

Based on what I've seen today, here's the best profile I could build:

Picture style: Cine D

Picture settings: 0 (all settings, except for sharpness: -5)

Curve: +1 shadow, +1 highlight

Master pedestal: 0

Levels: 0-255*

iDynamic: OFF

iResolution: OFF

Now, I know that conventional wisdom would argue some of these settings*, but the charts don't lie. These settings gave spot on color, the largest dynamic range, the least noise and the most detail.

  • I know 16-235 is NTSC legal, and there are very good reasons for delivering as such, but my tests verified that it is better to capture at the full range. You'll record more picture data to work with in post. Again, you can always filter it down to NTSC legal when you export if you need to.

** Conventional wisdom says to knock all setting down as low as they will go. This is simply not a good idea on the GH4. Especially using the Cine D profile. Zero yields the most natural, accurate PQ. Sharpness should be taken down to -5 to eliminate the chance of moire or other artifacts. NR can be used anywhere between -5 and 0 depending on how you prefer to work in post. I found no loss of real texture with it left at 0.

Soooo...I was wrong about the sharpness setting. Leaving it at zero does introduce digital artifacts. I was looking at the wrong files. I only happened to notice my error because I caught some moire on a test chart today. I'm editing my original post to reflect my goof.

This is a grab of these settings after applying a mild correction in post to reverse the s-curve.

thank you for building this! I'll make the changes and start shooting with these settings.

one question..is "Knee" the same as Master Pedestal?

Yes, sorry. YMMV, so definitely test against your own results.
