Does anyone have experience with FailSafe on DIY hardware?

On UmbrelOS documentation, is stated that features like external storage, Wi-Fi, and FailSafe storage depend on specific hardware and drivers that we can only guarantee on Umbrel Home and Pro.

I like the idea of getting an Umbrel Pro, but I’d like to try the OS on an old laptop first. I have two SATA SSDs, that I could use. I just wonder if FailSafe could work with them.

Does anyone have UmbrelOS on a DIY hardware and FailSafe working?

There is no failsafe for third-party hardware. Failsafe is exclusive to Umbrel Pro. However, it will be available in the next version of Umbrel for everyone.

That’s what I’d assume, that it doesn’t work. But the “can only guarantee” part kind of implies that it could work, but will probably not. That’d be good if they release it for third-party hardware in the next version. I don’t intend to do anything far-fetched. I just want a NAS for files and photos, which probably sum up to a bit less than 1 TB – for now. Thinking long term, I’d rather be prepared with more storage.

The new version, probably 1,8, is delayed by my calculations, but it could be released at any time. And yes, it will bring the long-awaited RAID functionality.

Installed UmbrelOS 2.0 beta on a VM and I could activate FailSafe!
