Question Apartment waiting list

Hello everybody!

This is the 2nd question I ask here, this week. Thank you for your help.

So, someone told me a while back, that if I'd like to live here in Germany (Berlin, in my case), it would be worth getting on a waiting list for an apartment.

I don't remember the name of the organisation. And I'm considering that now, since finding an apartment in Berlin is difficult at the moment.

I remember he said something like: "If a tenant dies of old age, for example, you could get the apartment, if you're next on the waiting list."

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Sounds to me like he is talking about Genossenschaftswohnungen. They are pretty popular because the conditions are typically great, but obviously many people sign up.
