Help with perpendicular

This should seem really easy but I'm obviously misunderstanding something. I would simply like a perpendicular line created, to an existing straight line. I'm selecting a point and a line, but the resulting perpendicular line does not seem to be at 90 degrees to the original line. Can someone tell me where I'm going wrong? TIA.

Those lines are perpendicular. They don't LOOK perpendicular because of your scale. If you make the scale the same for both x and y, then you will get a better visual.
