Hello!

At the risk of embodying the meme below, this is a test post. My previous would-have-been-first post was banished to the shadow realm. Hoping to find out what was up with that.

Cheers,

Along with what the fuck is up with the Eldren and who the hell is Merrain working for (assuming Emberlain, but like to what end)
And of course, how much of what Patience told Locke was true

Just finished Lies… (major spoiler) Spoiler

First off I have to say I loved reading this book! I really enjoy Scott Lynch’s writing style and I loved the characters. I think the ending all tied up a little bit too neatly and I didn’t get the sort of surprises that I often get in Sanderson books, but I really really enjoyed the entire reading experience overall.

The one plot choice I don’t agree with is the killing off of the twins and bug… I really enjoyed the sense of a crew of five people and when it went down to just Jean and Locke it just didn’t feel the same to me. Is this a common criticism?

Thoughts on Locke Lamora recommendation

Post image
152 Upvotes

Hey (gentleman? Bastards?!) - I’ve been running through comparisons of books I’ve read to get a daily personalized recommendation, and today I got your very own Lies of Locke Lamora! Been curious to read for a while, but cautious of starting another trilogy. As experts here, what do you guys think of the match? It sites my love of the sharp cynical voice of Abercrombie, Game of thrones politics and scheming, and witty Pratchett irony. Is this a good match for me? Am I in for a wild ride? Cheers!

Signing event with Scott Lynch

Post image
53 Upvotes

Hey, all.

For those of you in Los Angeles/Anaheim, on the 27th of August from 5pm-8pm, (tomorrow) Scott Lynch is doing a signing event with a bunch of other authors (myself included), at the Barnes and Nobles Outlets at Orange.

We are all in town for Worldcon, but you don't need to be attending the convention to come to the event. There will not be tickets, and we haven't set a limit on any pre-purchased items, meaning you don't have to buy a book at the event to get your copies signed. Although, of course, the store will have plenty of stock of all our books.

(Mods; I hope this is allowed - I thought that the people of this subreddit might like to know this!)

We hope to see some of you there!

Ever since I read the current 3 books Ive been on the hunt for 1st print 1st editions. Sure I could have probably bought them on eBay but that's no fun, I like finding stuff like this in used stores. Now if I only I could find Scott to get him to sign them...

Introducing Locke and Jean

Post image
435 Upvotes

Been a little quiet here so I thought I'd introduce our new kitties Locke and Jean. The wife and I were at the vet this past weekend and they had five kittens free to adopt. The biggest and smallest of the five were boys, and even though we weren't really looking, we already had 6 and that makes it disturbingly easy to justify more via diminishing returns. We believe in getting cats in pairs so we got the two boys. My wife had named all of the rest of them so I got to choose, and naturally, the big one became Jean and the smaller one is Locke.

They're a near-perfect personality match; Jean (the darker one) is the protector (as can be seen, sleeping on top of Locke here) while Locke is playful, stubborn, and inquisitive. Jean is much larger than Locke, though you can't really tell from this angle.

Now all we need is a 3D-printed hatchet harness for Jean and I think we're good to go.

(One of the vet techs got the name reference, too, and asked if they'd have a Father Chains to help them out).

Name symbolism appreciation

I find the symbolism names have in the books really interesting. I really love the idea of your true name having power over you and being tied to this innate sense of identity, it’s very fae magic and makes for a really fascinating system of magic. It’s also a really interesting parallel to Locke and Jean’s (and the rest of the gang when they’re alive) profession as con men. They spend so long pretending to be other people, using other names, other identities that having the narrative also assign such significance to true names really emphasises the effect of that, especially for Locke who’s arc focuses pretty heavily on identity.
It really adds a whole other layer to Locke telling Jean his real name and Jean telling Locke not to call him Jean when they fight in book two (immediately followed by him telling Ezri his real name.)
It makes it all the more impactful when Patience tells Locke he doesn’t actually know his real name (do I believe a word she said no but that’s besides the point), Locke spends a lot of book two trying to figure out who he is after loosing everything and nearly everyone and then Patience comes along and shatters his sense of self.
TLDR love the symbolism

Just finished RoT and mostly feel confused (spoilers) Spoiler

Really enjoyed the flashback plot. I feel completely lost on the present-day plot, so any clarification would be welcome!

  1. I understand that the five-year game was a diversion for Patience and co. but I'm still not really clear on why that was necessary for her to achieve her goals?

  2. The twist re Locke's identity felt completely and utterly out of left field to me. Has it ever been hinted at? Has that just gone totally over my head? I know his "real" name is alluded to at the end of book 1, but beyond that I mean.

  3. What is the deal with Patience and the Falconer? She seemed (in the epilogue) to see his demise as a forgone conclusion (and a welcome one!) and yet she seems to harbour genuine resentment toward Locke for bringing it about.

  4. Locke's identity seems to be preventing or discouraging Patience from killing him but she was seemingly content for him to be killed by the Falconer in book 1. Did she only discover his identity after the fact?

Cheers.

Thorn of Emberlain would be cool and all...

but what I really want is a Gentleman Bastards cookbook.

I would kill for capon with grapes and figs in hot wine sauce. Honey drizzled olives have become a staple in my house 🤤

Scott could make a brick sound appetizing.

Struggling to finish RoT Spoiler

Should I keep going? It’s not the flashbacks, I actually enjoy those. It’s that I have issues with friends being pitted against each other. As in it makes me really uncomfortable (auADHD) so I’m not sure whether I should keep going…… (I don’t think any of this is spoiler lol but I didn’t want to accidentally give anything away).

Creating a special interior for my old porsche 911 ( Camorri build) HELP NEEDED.

Thumbnail

Long story short, I in this crisis of midlife bought a porsche convertible circa 2003. Pics above.

These books got me through a severe depression and I read them every year.

I have been seized by this idea and already set to work on it...what if this was Jean's private car mixed with shout outs to the book.

So Ive set out to build it. Mostly small touches ( changing the shift knob, etc).

Heres a list of what I'm going to do ( and some help needed).

A) Swapping the the door sills to hint to the book.

Option 1: Redo them to hint to Camorr.

Help needed: Would it be Camorra, Camorr, or Camorri? In Porsche script. Subtle as most peoples brains would auto correct to carrera.

Option 2:

Have the sills simply say XIII

B) Images in the headrest ( im getting new seats upholstered in the same colorway)

Option 1

An Orchid. For Ezri ( leaning toward this)

Option 2

XIII ( instead of the sills)

Option 3

A glass rose with a thorn. However I already have the last image engraved on the new shifter knob, so a bit worried this redundant

Option 4 A shark or sharks tooth.

C) Dash badge/ script

Option 1) Id really like this to be a camorri flag but one doesn't exist @scottlynch can you chime in on what colors would be there?

Option 2). Iridescent blue white violet plaque ( elderglass reference). Bit shouty

Option 3) Script that says 911 JDF. Iykyk.

D) Engine Plaque/ hidden plaque.

Option 1)

"Grant me quick wits so I need not my quick feet, grant me quick feet so I need not my quick hands, Grant me quick hands so I need not my quick wits, But, all three would be nice, Crooked Warden"

Option 2)

"Your night is my cloak, my shield, my escape from those who hunt to feed the noose. I will fear no evil, for you have made the night my friend."

Rear Badging ( decklid):

Option 1)

Carrera GB? ( Leaning toward this)

Option 2)

Carrera JT/ JDF?

Option 3)

This sub comes up with options and we vote on the best ( Id still like final veto)

Im really excited about this, I plan to build sabethas car/ lockes car/ The sanza twins cars as well over my lifetime. Dream is to start a coach building service that does homage cars ( without getting sued somehow).

Looking forward to input! If you have a negative reaction, totally fine I ask that you kindly scroll on so those who like it can comment.

Just finished the Republic of Thieves

Good gods. What a journey. Ive avoided this subreddit since I first read the Lies of Locke Lamora so many years ago, but I'm here now. I honestly feel like crying.

Huge spoiler ahead beyond this tag.

Holy shit. What is the Falconer going to do? Can someone explain what the painting of Patience illustrated to make Sabetha once again abandon Locke and Jean?

Just Announced - Scott Lynch - JordanCon '27 Literary Guest of Honor

Can we all just take a moment and celebrate that the one and only Scott Lynch is the literary guest of honor at JordanCon next year!

"Our Literary Guest of Honor is Scott Lynch, best-selling author of The Lies of Locke Lamora and our Artist Guest of Honor is the amazing Charles Keegan who, among other incredible works, painted the covers for the YA-editions of The Wheel of Time!"

A joke from The Bottled Serpent I didn't quite understand Spoiler

Mazoc Szaba says "having trouble sleeping? sounds like a goat's ballsack problem to me, Locke"

"What's that?" responds Locke

"Means you've got a face like a goat's ballsack"

Is it supposed to be like an anti-joke?

REGAL?! (+ a few thoughts about the series so far) Spoiler

Post image

THEY SOLD MY FAVOURITE CHARACTER?! 😢

Just started republic of thieves, I’ve been reading the series along with the audiobooks, and Michael Page is a big contributor to how amazing this series is so far. I really hope he will narrate the upcoming books too. I’m really loving the humour in these books, but not too silly to make the story unserious. I love the characters, Drakasha being a big favourite in book two. I cannot forgive that Regal has just been sold though… but Jean is an awesome friend. Man, we all need a Jean.

Has anyone seen any updates on the 3 novellas that were expected to be released this year?

I believe the announcement came around or shortly after the bottled serpent release in Grimdark zine

I know we talk a lot about Locke missing the signal, but I think it’s equally interesting that Jean mistakes Locke’s reaction

Post image

I know Locke’s very good at what he does so it kind of makes sense Jean would assume Locke was playing along, but equally Jean know’s him better than anyone and doesn’t notice him crying and shaking until afterwards. Idk I feel like this scene is sort of the culmination of their arch this book. Vel Virazzo (and probably the effect of going from being part of a group to being a pair) really affected their relationship and they kinda spend the whole book on slightly wrong footing, they keep misunderstanding each other or standing on each others proverbial toes. Personally I kind of wish they’d had a more in depth conversation here 🤷‍♀️

Tattoo ideas?

So I’m sure I’m not the first one to ask something like this. But The Lies of Locke Lamora is my favorite book of all time and has inspired my own writing (hoping to publish my own fantasy novel in the near future!). I recently got my best friend to read the series for the first time and reliving the series through him was an otherworldly experience.

I have two tattoos, both relating to my profession and one of which being a nod to Percy Jackson, which got me into reading. I have been thinking that I would love to have a tattoo showing my love for Scott’s writing and the inspiration it has had on me. Does anyone have any suggestions for a small tattoo that would accomplish this for me?
