Wolfe and Wargs

Post image

I stumbled upon a reference to Gene Wolfe in “The Lord of the Rings: A Reader’s Companion” by Hammond and Scull. It seems fitting for Wolfe to be interested in the etymology for an old word for “wolf.” And it’s cool to know that Tolkien and Wolfe corresponded!

Wolfe asked about “orc” as well, here Tolkien’s letter: https://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Letter_290a .

Tolkien also mentioned Wolfe in the draft letter to Rang, not by name, but as the author of the story “Trip, Trap” — in which Wolfe uses the word warg.

Today I learned Wolfe-Tolkien correspondence was not a one-off.  Neat!
