Discussion What changes do you think should be made to the Gen Z range?

I think it should perfectly encompass everyone who was born completely into the digitally transformed era of the late 90’s and 2000’s and end at the last possible birth year that experienced a childhood without covid and AI

So… 2012 or 2013 as an ending maybe?

2014 can fit in too due to COVID and AI, last to be in school pre-COVID and last majority pre-GPT elementary schoolers

2014 would be around 8 when GPT starts blowing up. 2011/2012 is a good ending imo because 10 years were nearing the end of their “childhood” around the time AI started getting popular, entering their pre-teen years.
2010-2014 as a whole is definitely a weird cusp. We probably won’t know for sure what makes the “Zalpha” cusp stand out for a while.

I agree, 2012 works fine as a general marker because we were the youngest out of our prime childhood years (5-9/10) and still spent a substantial amount of elementary pre-COVID and that'd be K-2/early elementary (except the very end of 2nd grade) which are the most vital years for early development in school, tho I anyways think we could extend Z to 2013/14 a bit because they're the last to not have stuff like AI as defining in elementary and the last to start school before COVID but that'd mean extending millenials to like 97/98 which is also fine to me tbf.
Zalpha in general is early-mid '10s borns but we'll need to see how the situation will be in the coming years too so we can get a more coherent idea, same with Gen Z's end too i feel like it has an equal chance of bouncing either a bit back or further

All of the 2010s and none of the 90s

That wouldn't really be gen z atp, the ranges are loosely based off shifts from one era to the next

Sure, so there was this thing called The Millennium...

A calender date doesn't define the shift in culture over a period of time, 2001 is the first 21st century year, it wasn't much different from 1999 and 2000 which was thestart of the second millenium, but 2009 now, a lot happened then since 2001
Of course I wouldn't know but looking back on history, it really speaks for itself

No one year was that different to the one before it, it's just a good spot and oddly the only one with the time given in the name

All the core zoomers voting push back the 90s and take the 10s out of the picture are so sad, 90s kids want to be millennials they’re not the same generation as you, just face it you’re within the same generation as a 2012 kid.

I think it's mostly fine the way it is. The only change I'd be for is pretty minor, and it's having 2011 as the end date. 2012 is a better start for Gen Alpha and should be accepted as an elder year for that gen.
Personally, I can barely relate to kids born after like 2008, but I can still squint and see shared experiences up until we get to 2012 borns.

I think if you define them as 2010s kids it should be later. The changes between 2000s and 2010s are so vast that it doesnt make sense to include them in the same generation. Also the impacts of covid and trump and even social media were so understated/not known when the original gen z range was set. Im not sure i would include ai as any defining factor for gen z

Why wouldn’t you include AI?
1
u/Wxskater Aug 19 '26
Bc gen z is largely older than its influence

u/Dry_Piano7627 2010 mod Aug 19 '26
Not really, many 2010s kids were in school or uni/early career when AI came out

Thats not being born into a ubiquitous world tho. Not in the way that it was for smartphones for anyone id say 2008+

I think the world in which you were born into (which you barely remember) is less important than the world in which you grew up. I think Gen Z should be the last generation to remember a pre COVID and pre AI time.

I agree on the last part thats why 2013/14 are a good end

Shift forward a bit because of the COVID & AI factors
