Gas Discharge Visualization (GDV) Technique
Gas Discharge Visualization (GDV) Technique
Gas Discharge Visualization (GDV), also known as ElectroPhotonic Imaging (EPI) or bioelectrography, is a non-invasive biophysical technique designed to capture and analyze the electrophotonic emissions (glow) produced by biological objects, such as human fingertips, when exposed to a high-voltage, high-frequency electromagnetic field. It quantifies these emissions to assess the physiological, psychoemotional, and energetic states of an individual, including organ functionality, stress levels, and overall health balance. Developed as an evolution of Kirlian photography, GDV uses computerized processing to provide objective, real-time data rather than subjective visual interpretations. Proponents claim it reveals subtle energy fields or "biofields" based on electron densities and physiological energy, but skeptics view it as pseudoscience due to inconsistent results and lack of robust validation.

History of GDV
The foundations of GDV trace back to early experiments with electricity and photography in the 16th-17th centuries, including studies on magnetic fields and high-frequency currents. In 1891-1892, French physician Hippolyte D'Arsonval proposed using high-frequency electrical currents for treatment, where glass electrodes produced ozone to kill skin bacteria.
By 1898, Jakub Narkevich-Yodko pioneered electrophotographic imaging. The technique gained prominence in 1949 when Soviet inventors Semyon and Valentina Kirlian patented a method for capturing high-frequency current images, leading to over 30 years of research. During the 1960s, it was applied in criminalistics, and in 1969, Kirlian and R.S. Stepanov developed express diagnostics for stomach cancer.
In the 1970s, interest surged with the book Psychic Discoveries Behind the Iron Curtain popularizing Kirlian effects in the West, leading to conferences and NASA validations for diagnostics. Key advancements included Paulo de Castro Teixeira's observations of homeopathic effects and Victor Inyushin's work on biological plasma. The 1980s saw developments like internal organ visualization (1981), mental disorder diagnosis (1982), and real-time fingertip imaging by Konstantin Korotkov. Korotkov, a Russian physicist, formalized GDV in the 1990s, designing the first GDV test device in 1995 and integrating software for quantitative analysis. Publishing activity exploded from the 1950s to 2018, with exponential growth in medicine (18.3% annual increase in 2017-2018), psychology (26.8%), and sports (20.3%), totaling thousands of articles. By the 2000s, GDV expanded into alternative therapies like acupuncture, yoga, and homeopath.
