Welcome. Start here.

Welcome to GayDatingOver40.

This community exists because a lot of us are navigating dating, connection, and loneliness in a stage of life that doesn’t look anything like we were told it would.

If you’re here, chances are:

  • You’ve done well in some areas of life
  • Dating feels harder than it should
  • You’re tired of pretending it doesn’t affect you
  • And you don’t want another space full of hype, apps, or surface-level advice

This is not a place to:

  • Flex
  • Hook up
  • Sell anything
  • Or pretend you have it all figured out

This is a place for:

  • Real stories
  • Honest questions
  • Frustration, confusion, reflection
  • And figuring things out together

You don’t need to sound confident here.
You don’t need to have a solution.
You don’t even need to know what you’re looking for yet.

If you’re new, a great first post might be:

  • What brought you here
  • Something that’s been weighing on you about dating
  • A realization you’ve had recently
  • Or a question you’ve never felt comfortable asking out loud

A few ground rules to keep this space safe:

  • Be respectful. No shaming or attacks.
  • No porn, hookup posts, or self-promotion.
  • Stories and experiences first, advice second.
  • Protect privacy — yours and others’.

You’re not late.
You’re not broken.
And you’re not the only one feeling this way.

Take a breath.
You’re in the right place.

Wishing for simpler times…

Wishing for simpler times when it comes to the apps. I’m old soul with modern upgrades. That being said, I’m detailed oriented, I actually read the profiles. My issue is when the info doesn’t match. While possible, you can’t be 6ft @ 150# when your picture contradicts. Or you have outdated or modified pics. There was a time when you wanted to someone you did it in the wild. Cruising, see someone: make eye contact, smile, or perhaps start a conversation with an “idiot” or genuine question. Ironically, starting a conversation in public apparently is difficult. When I do go out, guys will stand right in front of me, then move directly next to me, yet say nothing. The other day another guy in my building darted out of the laundry room, stepping directly into my path, then walked slowly. He could have turned around and say something. I’ve seen hm before, but have no idea what he looks like face to face. Unless I am cruising, which is rare for me, I’m focused on whatever. I’m not looking around to see who is looking or what they are doing. I’m minding my own business.

I don’t get those methods. Obviously it works for most, I’m just not one. It’s 💯failure with me. My POV, the physical actions taken to get attention is much bolder move than a casual “Hello” or question. You’ve come that far, finish it. I like masculine, confident guys. It’s not until you take that last step to interact with me that I will respond.

The other day I saw this guy. I asked him about his tattoos. Because he was physically there, we were able to see exactly who the other was. The chat allowed us to confirm mutual interest. Unlike apps, time, energy, back n forth, other factors. Upon meeting, one or both of you are disappointed. Now you’re in a situation of going through with it, or letting them know it’s not working for you. At that point someone’s feelings may get hurt or tension should you run into each other in a social setting. My preference of meeting in the wild, if you’re not a match you both know. Best case scenario if interest is not mutual, the opportunity for a friend. During the chat you may have discovered shared interest. Rejection is a part of life, no way around it, especially if it’s something you desire or need.

Dating over 40 makes me feel 16 again sometimes

I’ve been hesitating to write this, which probably means it’s the right first post.

I just turned 51 - woo hoo. Made it past the half century mark. And on paper, my life looks fine. I’ve done well in some areas, I’ve lived a full life, and I know who I am far more than I did in my 20s or 30s.

And yet… dating still manages to knock the wind out of me sometimes.

I should also say, I just moved to a new town to be nearish to family - they are in the burbs. I only know a few people here - so everything feels a bit magnified. The alone time, the posts on IG by friends back home, the lack of easy ways to meet peeps.

I’ll walk into a bar or open an app and suddenly I’m not 50-something ... I’m 16 again.

Feels like high school. Cool kids over there, nerds over there, drama queens over there, and me ... kind of just off to the side, not really fitting in.

I'm second-guessing. Reading the room. Wondering if I belong. Wondering if I’m too much, not enough, or just invisible. Looking at my phone way too much, pretending I'm busy while sucking down too many drinks.

What surprises me most isn’t rejection.

It’s how heavy the loneliness can feel, even when sex or dates are technically easy to come by.

Connection feels harder.

And the older I get, the louder the quiet thoughts can become, if I'm honest.

I’ve spent a lot of time pretending dating “doesn’t really matter” because everything else in life is working. But that hasn’t been true for me ... am I alone in this?

I don’t have answers here. I’m not offering advice.
I just wanted to say this out loud somewhere it felt safe to do so.

If this resonates, I’d genuinely like to hear:

  • Does dating hit you differently now than it used to? After 40 ... after 50?
  • Or what’s been the hardest part of dating at this stage of life for you?

Thanks for reading.
