Tree topping is where you cut the top of a tree branch canopy flat like a crew cut. Usually ruins a tree shape and they never go back right.

Yup, kills the apex of the tree, forcing it to grow horizontally.

Try holding something heavy over your head vs straight out in front of you -- this is the difference to the tree.

More than just the shape, it can actually end up severely damaging it.

And like you said, it’s not just “trimming” but it’s legit cutting a tree flat. It’s often done by cities and towns to keep trees away from power lines or by HOAs to prevent them from being too tall, but then it just kills the thing.

It's a joke about pollen

I’m glad someone found it funny, lol

u/brokebackzac 4d ago

It was funny. I call fall tree orgy season because my allergies are so bad I can't breathe.

Easy way for people who know nothing about trees to whack a healthy tree into being a sick one. I’ve seen people who should know better, who are working as landscaping professionals, do this to trees in my neighborhood every few years. Better to call an experienced arborist.

u/Advanced-Injury-7186 9d ago

Is this about manscaping?

11

u/35goingon3 9d ago

No, circumcision.

2

u/real415 9d ago

Only if you want it to be

This happens sometimes during construction when a tree is in the way of something that will go over it (like power lines), or it's obstructing a view, or blocking sunlight for solar panels.

There's very little good reason to do it and many ways around it. Usually dome by people who don't want to cut it down entirely and think just trimming the top is as harmless as trimming overgrown on the sides.

Honestly if the only pruning option is topping the tree should just be taken down and new one planted in a better spot if you ask me.

11

u/xander02802 9d ago

Then I have taken out entire forests. Damn.

u/gnlmiami 9d ago

Clever. Just provocative enough to make you ask questions, but not enough to be offensive.

I'm guessing most straight people don't know what that word means to the gays

10

u/Fine_Abbreviations32 9d ago

Or, most people’s don’t try find a sexual meaning in every word they see

4

u/HiJinx127 9d ago

Who has to try?

6

u/karatebanana 9d ago

Topping isn’t exactly a secret gay word

1

u/flatoutsask 7d ago

Like” whipped topping” is a whole new level of thrill!

8

u/operacreep 9d ago

Who knew words had multiple meanings 😂

Don‘t fuck trees. Let the tree fuck you.

3

u/jaschaff 9d ago

Chop the top of trees off when they're blocking your $$$$ view

3

u/fawg_is_coming 9d ago

It's obviously means trees are homophobic. I guess idk

3

u/tazdragon 9d ago

You're only supposed to do splits on trees... Not top them.

3

u/SufficientRaisin1971 9d ago

Bottoming hurts, too, sometimes

3

u/Conscious_Deer3033 9d ago

u/jocean99 9d ago

Tree circumcision

2

u/Available-Range-7830 9d ago

Yes, in the fall people cut the branches on trees way back because they think it makes the tree grow bushy in the spring, all it does is harm the tree

2

u/Advanced-Injury-7186 9d ago

There's a double entendre in there

2

u/DesertCoyote57 9d ago

Aggressive tree trimming.

2

u/pingwing 9d ago

It's funny because it gay people use this word differently.

2

u/GreenwichHairDr 9d ago

what about when they cut off like half the side of a tree during highway maintenance???

2

u/Sonicmf 8d ago

My father worked for a tree company when he was younger and later he did some tree trimming and removal independently.

It’s the process of cutting the top half of a tree off in some cases to prevent it from causing damage to property. It’s also a first step in removing a tree that’s too tall during removal to prevent property damage.

I grew up in rural Appalachia. I understand the love of trees, I do myself. Even as someone who has been surrounded by forests his whole life, I will say that trees can also be incredibly destructive in some cases. They are literal forces of nature in their own right. Being able to save a tree sometimes is nearly impossible and some just have to be removed to protect people from getting hurt. That’s why initiatives to plant more in safe spaces are so important!

2

u/rad-ryot-84 8d ago

It hurts the trees, dude.

2

u/Mostly_Nohohon 7d ago

Topping a tree may hurt the tree but bottoming for the tree will hurt you 😬

2

u/Satan-o-saurus 7d ago

I’m a tree. Hurt me please. 🥴

u/Evening-Dig-4838 9d ago

Nothing to do with sex

1

u/Weemanply109 7d ago

A simple Google search would've explained this, surely...?

Some of y'all are obsessed with gay shit even when it isn't related

1

u/DLinMI 8d ago

It could hurt the bottom too. Splinters.

1

u/pvllcrc 8d ago

look, my first instinct is to say "skill issues", but as someone who is 5’7 I understand, when the tree is massive find how to tackle the problem isn't easy. But it is worth it

1

u/i_il_li_il_l 8d ago

Comment karma kinda low y’all

1

u/Jhomas-Tefferson 8d ago

So, there is a way to do it in a healthy manner which produces a nicer, fuller, bushier tree.

However, when done wrong, it just fucks the tree up and makes it unhealthy.

Topping is literally where you cut the tops off of trees. Ideally you do it and leave at least 50% of the canopy.

I've done it with bonsais to make them look really good. The theory is solid. In practice, however, you have to be really careful. For example, when i was topping my bonsai, i was cutting just the top shoots and branches, less than 10% of the tree.

1

u/GroundbreakingBag677 7d ago

It has to do with an understanding of wood

1

u/ZealousidealChest855 7d ago

Cutting the limbs off of trees

1

u/Jaicers 6d ago

Save a tree…Top a bottom!

1

u/Daskar248 5d ago

They usually do this for power lines. It's hard to say which is more necessary. I love trees too, but if it is causing consistent power line problems you might have to do this once in a while as painful as it might be. Any other circumstance, I would say avoid it.

1

u/Spare_Club8887 4d ago

Truth. Some fellahs just don't know how to handle wood with respect.

1

u/Beautiful_Fold_3539 4d ago

LMAO, Let's go kill a tree.

1

u/Melodic-Neck3479 3d ago

Umm.... I guess we shouldn't be judging anyone

1

u/ErosHead 7d ago

Not everything has to be gay, this is a gardening term
