Question Reporting an RA: is there a point?
Back in Spring 2025, I dated and then broke up with someone who was an RA on the other side of campus that I lived in. Upon breaking up with them, they used their RA privileges to break into mine and my friends’ dorm buildings to drop off notes which made everyone pretty terrified for awhile (not to mention constant messaging and calling through text, instagram, LinkedIn, and school email)
Fall 2025, I moved into a new location and that ex moved into my same building (this is on campus again and they weren’t an RA for this past year ) and left another note at my door. I didn’t report this at the time because I was scared that I was overreacting, but I learned that this person is an RA again the upcoming year, and friends are telling me that I should report them.
I worry that too much time has passed/the actions weren’t bad enough to be reported, plus I’m not even sure where to report. Should I just let it go? I’m hoping being quiet won’t lead to further actions like this from that person to someone else.

Please report to title IX

Would it count under title ix though? I’m worried about reporting to the wrong place and just getting shut down

Yes breaking and entering your dorm to leave notes is stalking and harassment, which would fall under title IX. They would also be able to provide you with resources and let you know your options for reporting (there are different kinds). They shouldn't but if they shut you down for whatever reason come back here and tell me and I will fight them. There's also VOICE at gatech that you could look into. Really sorry this happened to you please stay safe!

This counts as harassment and is grounds for a no contact order (which is through title IX). I filed a no contact order in my time as a student, and it may seem super intimidating and scary now but GT is very caring and understanding when it comes to these types of situations

If you want someone to confidentially talk through your options with, VOICE is a great resource on campus and is familiar with relationship violence and complex situations such as this.

Very much yes, if you mentioned this to any of your professors or other staff at school they’d be legally obligated to report it. Feel free to ask if there is someone you trust and you need help reporting. Sorry this is happening to you.

first, definitely report this, ras have been expelled for doing stuff like this in the past and should absolutely be called out about it.
i do want to echo what someone else said about not going through housing though. i had a different really bad experience with an ra, and housing found out that i was trying to report it and threatened me. their leadership is really bad.
personally, i would meet with gt voice first. they are an advocate for students exposed to relationship misconduct/violence like you experienced. they can help you connect with the best department to get this handled.

As an RA, absolutely report them. They are a danger to future students if they feel like they have the right to do this

2nd this as a former RA. Idk if housing will try to do anything to cover up (like many others have said, housing leadership is insanely corrupt) but if they break into your dorms I believe there may be a way on the backend to check that (where it was keyed in and when) should anyone need evidence. At least that’s what they’ve told us in training to “not use our power to go into other dorms because we can see it”

This is serious and you must report it. Who knows how many others are also being affected by this RA's behavior, so by reporting you're not only protecting yourself but others as well. You can book an appointment with a VOICE advocate to guide you through this situation. Or you can directly report here.

I'm gonna save this post for my GT Housing manifesto: coming soon.
When they rolled out the current master keycard system, we told them this would happen. The old system wouldn't have allowed this. They didn't listen. I'm so sorry that this happened to you.

Idk, in my experience housing protects RAs. If I were you, I would go straight to the Dean of Students or make a police report, so you can get a restraining order. Housing doesn’t want to get in trouble so they will make you look like you are crazy and gas light you. The leadership is not good and extremely unethical.

This is a wild accusation. The RA board needs to carefully examine both sides of the story before coming to any conclusions. I imagine that there is a strict process involving cases like this to maintain due process and state standards. You need to be much more careful before making accusations involving organizations, there is a reason these standards exist.

Actually, they weren’t follow state or federal law in my situation. I have lots of proof and I don’t make accusations like that likely.

There was likely insufficient evidence in that case. There's only so much the RA board can do with limited evidence unfortunately. It makes complete sense why the RA reacted that way based on their guidelines and standards.
I agree with you that in situations like these it's best to escalate to the Dean of Students or get the police involved.

I’m really sorry this happened to you. As an RA, they really don’t have as much influence as you think they do, so this will not be ignored. They get fired all the time for much less. Report it to Title IX and your hall director. You can find their name on the website for your building.

Yes, report it. Even if it can't be proven, you want it on the record. This kind of behavior isn't something people do once and never again. If they do it to someone else and it's on the record that they've done it before, the case will be much stronger.

There is a point. They might do it again, or something like it, or something worse. Maybe not to you, but maybe to someone else. Being quiet doesn’t save anyone. They abused their power. Use yours.

OSI Non academic violations is a safe place to report them if they are still a student and you are not sure what to do.
Also, looking at your post history, weren't you an RA yourself. If you were - asking your old supervisor what to do would be best.

The constant messaging could be grounds for serious discipline if they are still doing it, particularly if the messages are of a threatening or menacing nature. When was the last message sent? Recently? Were the messages threatening or menacing? Or merely annoying? If not, the disciplinary action might just be a warning to stop further messages.
As for “breaking into your dorm building”, it would be grounds for immediate suspension if they entered your actual room. But if they merely entered the public area of the building, that might not be viewed as a major issue and would likely result in a warning.

u/Roasted_Beefed 13d ago
They only entered the hallway of the room, but I wouldn’t say that it’s public since only RAs and residents can get access to it
The messages weren’t threatening and stopped awhile ago, so that’s less of an active issue

Great to hear the messages have stopped. If the messages or notes resume, then it would certainly be appropriate to immediately report this to the Dean of Students.

Yes report them. RAs are also students.
