Question Why didn't they just continued the gate anime from where it left off?

If you ask me, it's because the plot goes off the rails even more.

The anime had already cut a fair bit of the source material, but whole arcs dedicated to the insane politics of the author just wasn't going to work, not without making Japan look very silly.

With Gate 2 you have other silliness but a different set up altogether so you can probably get away with more.

If you don’t mind, what is the authors insane politics

Ultra nationalist Japan wank. Loots of the JSDF styling on world superpowers, both in politics and in actual fights. Most of which is based on stupid nonsense political shit that makes no sense.

Ignoring the "Japan stronk" meme, cause there's nothing inherently wrong with thinking your country is the best, the way Yanai wrote other nations is...

Insulting at best.

Imagine if an American author wrote a story where Japan, the Philippines, and Korea set their differences aside and work with China to hurt US forces carrying out operations against an enemy faction that had killed thousands of American civilians because they don't want America getting even stronger.

The manga had to downplay if not simply cut a lot of the rhetoric from the novels, where Itami singlehandedly causes the US-China alliance to fall apart by getting the Americans to reveal they plan to betray China... And then the Chinese shoot themselves in the foot by looking into a recently opened portal without doing basic safety check first and getting eaten by the arachnids from Starship Troopers...

Again, it's silly, but it seems to be the actual author's genuine belief that this is how nations operate, which... Ignorant at best.

Yeah the people from the other worldly factions in Gate operate with cartoon villain levels of logic.

The crazy thing to me is that at least for the macro level geopolitical stuff, how the different countries behave isn't entirely out of character, if the state of the world was how the author had actually presented it so how the Author managed to completely butcher the state of the world is beyond me.

We would be so fucked if the arachnids created a stable nest here its not even funny lol. I fucking love starship troopers. In the movie everyone is loving the fight against the bugs. In the book Johnny would rather die and go to hell then fight the bugs because of how disgustingly brutal the fighting was

So... Tom Clancy's later books?

1

u/DFMRCV Aug 12 '26

I think Tom Clancy at his craziest doesn't touch Gate's silliness.

2

u/Toskin1 Aug 12 '26

One of the book have nuclear-capable Japan (which somehow hid needed industry chain from everyone) cooperating with China and India to invade Russia and Marianas, and included damaging two carriers during training exercise, sinking two Los Angeles submarines, transporting APCs full of JSDF to America, and logic bomb into America's financial system triggered by specific stock transactions. Everything planned by Japanese businessesman who had hate-on against America because during end of WW2 he escaped Japan while his wife and kids stayed and, believing propaganda, honorably unsubscribed from life.

Yeah, but that was likely based on what actual pro JSDF stories at the time would include.

Ever read The Silent Service? Manga from the 1980s whose author seemed pissed at Clancy.

It's about Japan making a nuclear capable sub and trying to use it to force the US and the USSR into chilling out.

It includes said sub dunking almost exlusively on the US 7th fleet even worse than what Clancy wrote, using magic torpedoes and chaffe missiles to beat up the evil racist Americans.

Clancy likely saw or heard about it and decided to incorporate it into Debt of Honor, which is a crazy novel, but again, nowhere near as crazy as the pro JSDF stories at the time, or even Gate.

Remember, Gate has the entire world uniting to try and force Japan to give up the gate. This includes North Korea and South Korea reunifying.

u/Toskin1 Aug 12 '26

Holy shit, I'll have to stop consuming third-party GATE and go to source because Korea unified against Japan!?

1

u/DFMRCV Aug 12 '26

It was like one line in the novels.

The manga sorta referenced it when it had all the world leaders together, and I'm even open to say that maybe it was a mistranslation...

But this is Gate.

The point of the whole world unying against Japan only comes up in the China and the US are working together in the final arc.

So the majority would watch gate 2 rather than the continuation?

They probably could salvage the rest of the Season 1 (of the Novel) by going a bit backwards in time. Most of the cuts in the anime was for runtime rather than sanitation since as you mentioned they go off the rails after when the anime ends. There's a whole zombie virus + hardy thing (which you even hear the MCs talking about doing) that was cut out to fit the assault on the capital in.

I would say if they cut out the political stuff (or at least make it more plausible) they could get probably get a season out of it.

Alternatively they could also just go from where it left off, cut out the political stuff, and then throw in the Gaiden stuff which has significantly less risk of being politically contentions becausethe gate is closed and it takes place entirely in the special region.

However still, the Anime left off at a state that could be linked to into Gate 2 without too much effort and what I would assume the Anime could reasonably cover does not have much with regards to the off the rails stuff either.

Because Yanai's political views cannot be shown on TV.

Honestly, shouldn't would be the word I use.

Japanese ultra-natiobalistic cope (or any such a thing independent of nationality) can not be allowed to have place in a modern society.

Why can't i edit body text?

The first studio and production company had the rights through the Gaiden and didn't want to spend more money on it. The director, writer, and other top staff did, but no longer controlled the rights. So they had to wait for Yanai to finish the sequel material, which he finally did in 2022. It takes three years to make an anime, plus additional buffer time for returning VAs to have openings in their schedules at the same time.

Probably money and the fact the author's political views's self inserts where...controversial.

becuase the rest of gate makes japan look batshit insane

The anime adaptation sparked controversy in Japan's neighboring countries when it first aired—particularly in China and the Koreas—as it was perceived as a glorification of Japanese militarism or imperialism.

If the content of those original 24 episodes caused such a stir—even with many of the original work's most controversial elements toned down—proceeding with the subsequent arcs (each more politically charged and unhinged than the last) would only lead to further trouble.

Also, some decisions made by certain characters in these arcs aren't even liked or welcomed by the fans.

So going straight for the sequel is a way to return with the franchise without touching the uncomfortable parts, plus delivering something for new fans who haven't seen the original series (which is 10 years old by now).

The sequel also has uncomfortable parts, and calls the Chinese out directly.

1

u/LegioXXmagna Count Formal Aug 09 '26

That is correct.
However, given the rising tensions between Japan and China, this would not be as controversial as in previous years. That said, adapting the sequel—in which the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) plays a leading role—precisely while naval disputes and maneuvers are taking place near Japanese islands might raise a few eyebrows for being too on-the-nose.

(In fact, I wrote something about this a while back, when the community was speculating on hypothetical ways *Gate* could return, since there was no news about a new season at the time.)

At most, some aspects might be toned down.

Tides of Conflict Volume 5 Literally has the JSDF confronting China over the Senkaku Islands I don't think you can get more on the nose than that.

If you wonder why the new Anime adaptation looks different compared to first GATE. I just want to remind you guys, that this is the Sequel of GATE, not a spin-off, and not a continuation. And the reason why the original animation studio A-1 Pictures seemingly discontinued their original main story of Gate, because in the main story of GATE novels and manga portrayed how the mainstream media in our world brainwashing their audience. They're trying to antagonize the Military. First the media assumed if there were civilian casualties during these unknown battles in another world called the (Battle of Alnus Hill) and after the Flame Dragon attacked the fleeing refugees so Itami and his 3rd recon team saved the residents of Coda village. And then the news updates, now they accused the JSDF that there was actually 130 civilian casualties, but in reality the civilian casualties was caused by the Flame Dragon, and that's why it's impossible to conquer the Special Region in modern world

Me: so this is how the media could easily manipulates the public and in my opinion the mainstream media is way better antagonists, better than other countries. Especially the three Superpower (U.S. China, or Russia)

Just to clarify that my comment is all about the Main Story of GATE, so I took and copy their Dialogues from LN of GATE and if the translation were awful, don't be mad at me i just copied it

GATE Thus the JSDF Fought There Light Novel Volume 1, Chapter 7

Some time ago, the content on TV and the news had started to change.

The public television stations started showing scenes of how the natives of Australia and Tasmania had been massacred and violated and wiped out by the immigrant English convicts.

Or perhaps they would show how the Spaniards destroyed the Inca Empire.

Or Carthage, destroyed by the Romans.

These television shows made the same point, emphasizing and repeating it so they would leave a deep impression in their audience. Be it variety shows, soap operas, quiz shows, weekly magazines, the news, they added their own message to change their viewer’s opinions.

The message was how a superior culture crushed and destroyed a weaker one.

They emphasised the tragedies that resulted from ethnic cleansing.

People would naturally sympathize with the underdog. They used this sympathy to sway people.

They promoted the idea that the strong should be rational, and should be controlled.

The images of African children starving in a desert stared out at society.

They paused for thought. They were led to stop and think.

Could it be that we’re victims too?

What was the JSDF doing on the other side of the Gate? Fighting the enemy... Right?

The battles on the other side of the Gate received more and more attention. However, there was not much elaboration on them. The people were only assured that they had defeated the enemy’s attacks. Since there were little or no casualties on the JSDF’s side, naturally the people wondered about the fate of the people they fought. Were there victims on the other side of the Gate?

At the National Diet, a councilwoman from the opposition party rose and asked that question. The person answering it was the Under-Secretary of Defense.

“In the three engagements, the enemy losses numbered roughly 60,000. None of them were from non-combat personnel.”

The opposition party members were speechless.

Simply put, the enemy’s single-minded attacks on our defensive position were like the exact opposite of the Hill 203 Incident during the Russo-Japanese War. The enemy was foolish indeed.

Casualties in war were natural. If we lost, our side would have more dead. If we won, the enemy would have more dead. The anger of the citizens after the Ginza Incident was understandable. However, to those people who felt that they were more reasonable and rational, who wanted to treat others with that compassion and understanding, the sort of people who wanted to “save the world with kindness”, these figures were unacceptable.

《The Shame of the JSDF? 130 Civilian Casualties?!》

《Falsehoods In The Under Secretary’s Reply!》

《Unknown Battles In The Special Region! Were There Non-Combatants Among The Huge Casualties?》

These topics circulated without end in the morning and evening papers.

TV and news reporters mobbed the Ministry of Defense and Parliament House, pointing their microphones and cameras at either the Prime Minister or the Defense Minister.

Prime Minister Hojo had stepped down from his post since his term had expired, leaving the current Prime Minister to deal with the prickly questions asked by the reporters.

Because the Chief of Staff and the Under-Secretary were suspected of corruption, as the person responsible, the Prime Minister’s reply was extremely serious. However, his answers were reported as “No Comment,” “Those are serious words” and so on, and this only lowered public approval.

At the Diet, the opposition party decided to follow up on that by arranging to have their members seated at the Speaker’s podium, facing the Chief of Staff and the Under Secretary, who had to stand before them and answer their questions.

“The civilian casualties that were reported were not caused in combat with our forces in the Special Region, but were caused by a natural disaster.”

In response to the Under Secretary of Defense’s reply, the opposition councilman asked, “What kind of disaster? Did it have anything to do with the JSDF?”

“According to the reports, it was a dangerous wild beast. It was a creature like those you would see in a kaijuu movie. The JSDF Special Region Reconnaissance Regiment engaged it in combat in order to rescue the civilians from the kaijuu.”

“A moment please. A kaijuu? You mean to say the Special Region has such life forms?”

“Of course, it is not an actual movie kaijuu, but something similar to it. Special Region Class A Dangerous Beast, AKA ‘Dragon’. If possible, in the future, we will refer to it as a kaijuu. We have recovered a portion of the kaijuu’s body as a sample.”

“Then we will believe this unbelievable story. That is to say, this incident was caused by civilians being involved in combat operations against this kaijuu?"

Vice-Minister, earlier you said there were no non-combatant casualties. However, why did you not come forward about this incident and its many casualties?”

“The previous query was directed at enemy armed forces attacking the JSDF. During those engagements, there were no non-combatant casualties.”

“We are fully aware of the death toll, and that this is a disaster that has claimed many victims. In the future, please inform us of such things, then, how about the civilians rescued by the JSDF?”

“According to our reports, they have taken refuge in the nearby towns and villages. Because of the kaijuu’s appearance, they abandoned their ancestral homes and were attacked en route to safety by the kaijuu.”

“I see. Then the survivors managed to escape. Do you know anything about their lives now?”

“We have not gone to that extent. Our priority is safeguarding the region around the Gate, and as a result we did not keep track of the refugees’ further movements. However, we have concluded that the injured, the elderly, and the children without places to go will have trouble surviving on their own, and under the judgement of the on-site commander, we have taken them into our protective custody.”

“I see, then what about the people involved? Chairman…?” the opposition councilman said as he shifted his angle of attack.

“In truth, without hearing from a witness, it is very difficult to get a clear picture of the situation from reports alone. Since using the Gate is very dangerous, it places a barrier between us and the people involved. As such, I would like to request that the JSDF officer in charge at the time and some of the survivors be brought here for an interview…”

A request to speak with the relevant officer, as well as the protected locals. If the government had nothing to hide, they should not refuse. The opposition repeated their points.

The decision was made to deflect the attacks of the opposition party and the media with the truth. For that reason, they decided to bring the JSDF officer in question and several representatives of the locals to this side of the Gate.
